'The Nation's Talking About It'

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- MSU coach Tom Izzo addressed the national spotlight Monday, with both UM & the Spartans ranked in the top 10 entering Tuesday's game at Breslin Center.

  • Nice article. It's always good to get perspective from people who actually watch MSU. Unlike people from ESPN:

"Michigan State is scrappy as usual but not as tough inside as it has been in recent seasons (95th in offensive rebounding rate per Ken Pomeroy). Michigan, 94th in the same category, has been driven by guard play, too. But McGary's aggressiveness inside could be the difference when the Spartans and Wolverines meet Tuesday night."

Arguably the best frontcourt in the B1G and one of the best in the country and we're not tough inside as gauged by our offensive rebounding?

Door knob smart Mcgary and pillow soft Morgan. If Payne and Nix don't carry the play It will be a shame. That front line is red meat for those two.

beautiful....but for basketball I think scum being irrelevant is better for the nation. One sport is bad enough and not having them in basketball is a win win for everyone

So, we're 95th...and they're 94th? And that's going to be the difference in the game?

I believe Morgan will be out. My UM friends saying Horford will get the start with McGary as the 6th.

i.e... if we start Nix and Payne, they'll pretty much have to play zone because there is no way Beilein is stupid enough to have Stauskus guarding AP. Morgan being out forces their hand in how they handle the matchups.

Kind of hard to rebound made shots . . . this is one of the better shooting teams I can remember for MSU (shooting just under 47%).

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • McGary is going to get a lesson in big man post play on Tuesday. Payne is beginning to look unstoppable at times with his newly found agression and it's starting to show up more than once in a while.

Who wrote that, ESPN? What a pile of crap. "Scrappy as usual"... gee, thanks for the props. We're only in 1st place in the #1 conference. Good thing Izzo was able to pull this rag-tag bunch together to scrape together 20 wins in 24 games. blah

Pretty much the way I see it as well. UM will play a LOT of zone in this game to keep Nix & Payne from going off. Harris, Appling, and (hopefully) Trice will really have to be on their game to convince UM to drop the zone.

I'd love to see Costello and Gauna get 12-14 minutes combined in this game as well to keep Nix and Payne fresh.

Costello is a gamer and every bit as physical as McGary. If our assistants challenge Costello in practice and get him on the floor for a couple of short spurts tomorrow night, I think he'll respond in a positive way and get us a few momentum plays that fires up the crowd even more.

Michigan is obviously a good shooting team too (about 50%) but they've also taken 110+ more shots than us. Hence the greater number of offensive rebounds. In conference, both teams are right next to each other in most categories. Of course, that includes statistical outliers like Michigan's games against Northwestern (both 25+ point wins)...

  • It seems to me like this game is NOT getting hyped--which is fine. But I think more people will be talking about the game after Tuesday night than before.

  • I know Trice probably won't play, and that's a huge loss, but I think we're going to kick UM's ass.

    Rodeo Burger

  • Izzo also said Trice is "very, very questionable." Doesn't sound like he'll be able to go but Izzo said he's day-to-day so I suppose it's possible.

He also mentioned watching last year's game at UM, when both Trice and Kearney played key roles down the stretch.

Not a whole lot of time for hype here with both teams playing in games Saturday. Sort of snuck up this year and I'm sure Izzo's OK with that.

  • I think nix and even more so payne will completly undress McGary tomorrow. Nix can out muscle him and Paynes athleticism could be the game.

I'm expecting the rallying cry of "Big deal. We've still beaten you 3 out of the last 5 games. We've got our sights set higher, Sparty". Because those two 2011 victories that both Michigan and Penn State accrued against us are a real barometer of where we are as a program.

They can play zone if they want too, Payne shoots 90% from the free throw line

  • The way Payne shoots the ball, he should be getting atleast 15 shots a game
