The Official Mad Men Season 5 Thread

How did it take 5 seasons for Don to decide he wants to bone Christina Hendricks?

    Don will never bone Joan.

    1) It's a TV schtick, he's sentimentally connected to her and will always protect her.

    2) He is one of the founding members of the RCMB (back when it was actualy a bulletin board in the break room) and he thinks she's fat.

owed $8K in taxes in the UK.

Yea, they mentioned something about taxes, but I don't think that's the full story. I think more is going to come out, and Lane will be sent to jail during the season finale. Also, that Hari Krishna stuff was great and the girl is crazy - she is going to pissed at crane, I wonder what she'll do. Also, Don seems to be into driving fast again, that should lead to some bad results.

Yea, and I'm thinking he wants to live at the office because Megan keeps nagging him and yelling at him.

one of the recaps I read said it was an accounting error by SCDP's accountant and on the phone with Lane he said something about targeting ex-pats. Maybe some deportation coming??

When we were watching the scene where Lane forged Don's signature my wife said to me "that's how I used to do it with my dad's signature when I was in high school." lol

Trying to grasp the whole Megan going psycho episode. Maybe she's feeling that Don isn't supporting her acting "career?"

Yea, we finally saw a fight where Megan was actually the one in the wrong. I don't really know what's going on, and i'm always wrong in my predictions. I don't really think it's about the acting or the play they went to, I think the problem is that they aren't with each other all the time. She is never going to get Don to tell her where he is and what he's doing, but when she was working with him she knew. So maybe that's her problem. I wonder if she's going to try and go back to advertising - I doubt it, at least not back to Don's firm.

    - The lead in to next weeks show, which never shows anything, made it look like Megan was helping Don with an ad, so there's that.

  • Is it just me or is Don more intimate with women when he's NOT trying to sleep with them? And nice move by Don to address Joan's flowers as being from Ali Khan, delivered by a hungover Roger lol

What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...

  • As much as Don liked having Megan in the office, she was ultimately stealing his focus away from his usual genius. Now that Megan is only involved with "home Don", "work Don" can get back to his usual brilliant self.

he should've just asked for a loan from the p'ship, partners do that all the time

He's all about appearances. He's the bloody CFO. A successful CFO shouldn't need a loan for that amount. If Don can drop that on a car in one day, Lane should have something in his own bank account. Lane's house of cards is tumbling down and we're going to find out more details soon. He's all about covering things up to make things look proper, or to boost his own image.

I'm telling you, he's either going to jail or he's taking a leap off the building. The Lane we know would never go to jail. Living with that reality would be the utmost failure to him.

It was hard to understand where this whole issue came from but I had a feeling that there was a reason why he didn't want to tell the partners he owed England this money... "You took the queen's money and invested it abroad" or something like that was the comment from the accountant, right? I assume that meant there was some sort of tax on investments with british pounds? Maybe because his former firm was HQ'd in London? Who knows, interesting, thickening plot though.

He should go back to his chocolate bunny.

he probably still owns a flat that he's renting out and didn't pay taxes on the rental income or something like that

either way, I wouldn't be too scared of extradition over tax evasion, very few countries even send back the people we are after, can't see the Royal Navy setting sail to come scoop up some penny ante fish like Lane

This. Very good episode with the Jaguar campaign. Don is obviously very upset with how business was handled, and Peggy bails on SCDP. Cant wait for next week!

The point was about what does it take to make the sale. Peggy and Joan were measuring their worth, and Don was trying to re-prove his worth.

  • Interesting episode. I think there is something else at play - Joan took a shortcut and Peggy didn't. By this I mean that I think Joan was played by Pete, by the partners (except Don), by the Jaguar dealer, and most importantly I fear, by Lane. Joan was raped by her former husband and she could at least feel in-control at work. Take that away and what becomes of Joan?! She is a character that we're emotionally invested in and I just don't see this becoming her Cleopatra moment. But I will add that Christina Hendricks was outstanding in this episode and attention for that fact should come her way.

I compare her choice to Peggy, who has grown beyond Don and came to realize that fact. Don, in a touching scene, perhaps came to understand it as well. Her work has brought her rightly to a different level and we saw another level of her growing confidence. Yes, Peggy "sold" herself (which was the point of the episode) but the contrast between her, Joan, and their choices was stark.

Two people came out of this episode more likeable - Don and Peggy. Don didn't sell out a friend; Peggy had the courage to realize the point had come to try something new. I felt incredible sorrow for Joan, whose intelligence and strength was flat-out used by her colleagues. For the rest, especially Roger Sterling, you have to realize how truly little they think of Joan when making their vote. Her trust in them, I fear, will not be rewarded......

I actually felt a little sorry for Don. He had one of his classic pitches, and it was all for naught because Joan already sealed the deal the night before. I knew it was going to happen because Pete was all about Jaguar. Jaguar or bust, in his eyes, and he told Trudy that.

That episode didn't go well for Don or Megan, as both seemed to lose a sense of self. Megan was hyped for a role that turned out to be a lot different than she expected, while Don got Jaguar but got them by doing the wrong thing -- and he lost Peggy amid all of this. Interesting that Freddie Rummsen helped spur Peggy away, and why were they even together at lunch to begin with?

    Other thoughts:

    - Lane is about to get screwed over bad. He is toeing the line between getting caught and getting away with it
    - What ever happened to Peggy's baby? Will the truth EVER come out?
    - Ginsberg continues to stand out, and Peggy leaving gives him even more room to move up in the company
    - Interesting conversation between Peggy and Ken, and Peggy telling him off
    - Roger not seeming too bent out of shape over Joan whoring herself

Peggy's baby was given up for adoption.

Lane is going to get exposed and probably back to England in the season finale.

  • After all the dirt she's has on the partners and how many people they have slept with that were not their wives. you think she really gives a damn what they think about who she slept with?

I think Peggy needed to go but I'm not looking forward to that douche that she is going to work for. And I have to admit. When she was walking to the elevators I was worried she was about to have the doors open with no car there and fall to her death.

With Peggy gone and Megan failing to catch her big break as an actress does Don ask her to come back?

Season finale of season 2 she tells Pete she gave it up for adoption when he confesses to her that he should have married her instead of Trudy.
