The definition of "uniform"

  • uniform: Not changing in form or character; remaining the same in all cases and at all times. Identical or consistent, without variation.

I have no problem with the new costumes, if the athletic department and team feel they make them look better and present a good image. Just don't tell me these get-ups are Spartan "uniforms".

  • As if the noun doesn't share the same characteristics. Like if i said that your reply was drool, the verb definition of drool would still describe your post pretty well.

They are uniforms because each player will wear these and these uniforms will remain the same in all cases and at all times during the course of time in which they will be worn.

Your analogy fails to work because MSU, and every team in the country wears multiple uniform designs throughout the year.

You can do a better job of pouting. I know you have it in you.

  • And by your warped adjective definition, MSU has been wearing costumes for decades. Why stop now?

I'm not all worked up serious, but i meant what i posted. People are criticizing posters who don't like the uniforms by saying they're old or stupid for not liking change. But one can be open-minded and all for all sorts of things changing and still think that having uniforms that stay consistent makes sense, because they're meant to make MSU consistently identifiable.

I'm trying to say that you can't blame someone for wanting something to stay the same that is by definition expected to stay the same.

I don't blame you. I credit you with starting the dumbest uniform thread today. That took some doing. Well done!

  • Except that isn't the definition, rendering your OP unfounded. You don't like unnecessary change. That is fine and totally understandable. But your one definition of the adjective "uniform" doesn't apply here.

  • Sheesh, just because i'm late to a topic that's probably had endless whining, don't project it on me.

I know that you have opposite ends of the spectrum:

Uniforms that have never changed in any slight detail for hundreds of years
    vs.
"Uniforms" that change every few minutes, on each set of downs, in color, style, etc.

I don't expect the first one. I just think it's a natural reaction to think that the clothes are changing so often that they've lost enough identifiability to really be effective as "uniforms".

I've thought for years that PSU has ugly uniforms, but they have stayed close enough to the same for enough years that they are very identifiable, and it's helped their image over that span of time.

This isn't like complaining about dancing after touchdowns or music in the stadium or the forward pass. It's about an item that is MEANT to make a team easily identifiable. The uniforms look great to me. They just don't look identifiable as being MSU. If we wore them every game for a few years, i'd change my mind, but that's not the trend.

I'm pretty sure everyone here will be able to identify MSU's football team this Saturday. Do the different home and away uniforms confuse you too?

Uniforms aren't supposed to make a team identifiable to everyone who sees them, they're supposed to make them distinguishable from one another on the field of play. Keeping the same, recognizable jersey for a long time is a good marketing strategy, but it's not the only good marketing strategy, nor is it the purpose of wearing uniforms. And what "trend" are you referring to? These are not new standard uniforms, they're alternate jerseys, something that is done in almost every sport in the world.

Football uniforms are not "by definition expected to stay the same" except by out of touch geezers.
