The Most Overpaid College Basketball Coaches - Forbes

There aren't many college hoop coaches with John Calipari's pedigree. But there are a handful. Yet none of them make more money.

  • How the hell is Billy Donovan considered over paid?

    Don't post poop!

  • I feel much dumber after clicking through that stupid slideshow.

How the hell is Indiana’s Tom Crean overpaid? It looks like the writer took all time winning percentage final 4s and national championships while forgetting to look at the situation coaches came into when signing their big contracts.

That's what happens when you look purely at statistics. Yeah, Crean was starting to get on the hot seat before this seasons started, but he earned every penny from IU just this year. He built IU all the way back from Kelvin Sampson's leftovers. When he came in, he literally had MAC-level talent on his team.

Billy Donovan is a bit overpaid, but it's because he's leveraged a lot of money out of UF. That's what happens when you nearly take the Magic and UK jobs.

  • That is stupid. As much as I dislike Cal, the attention he brings to Kentucky is worth more then his win percentage. You would think a forbes article would do more research then win percentage and tournament success to try and rate a coaches worth.

I can't stand Cal, I know he has not won a national championship yet, nor has he lost a home game at Rupp.

And they say that he's made three final fours, which isn't true.

My thoughts as well. The article is as shallow as can be and the writer is clueless. I'm sure Calipari's hiring and success at Kentucky has meant huge donations to the BB program, better TV money, etc.. Not to mention one of the most storied programs in college BB history once more becoming a perennial top 5 program.

Was this in Forbes or Bleacher Report?

  • I thought there were some pretty valid submissions on that list. Travis Ford, Oliver Purnell and Mark Turgeon should have been WAY higher on the list.

    ass dan

  • I bit the bullet and saved you from Forbes' latest cheapass attempt at slide show page clicks.

    John Beilein

    University of Michigan
    Salary: $1.75 million
    W-L: 384-252 (.604)
    Tournament Appearances: 7
    Final Fours: 0
Titles: 0 Solid veteran coach has taken four schools to the big dance, though the Wolverines are 43-47 in the Big 10 during his five years.

    John Calipari

University of Kentucky Salary: $4 million
    W-L: 501-154 (.765)
    Tournament Appearances: 14
    Final Fours: 3
Titles: 0 Supreme recruiter wins like crazy, but the top paycheck in the country over Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, Jim Calhoun and Tom Izzo? Win a couple of championships first.

    Travis Ford

    Oklahoma State University
    Salary: $1.8 million
    W-L: 201-166 (.548)
    Tournament Appearances: 3
    Final Fours: 0
Titles: 0 Second lowest career winning percentage among coaches making over a million dollars a year. Oklahoma State is sub-.500 (30-33) in Big 12 play during Ford’s four years there.

    Billy Donovan

    University of Florida
    Salary: $3.5 million
    W-L: 420-177 (.704)
    Tournament Appearances: 11
    Final Fours: 3
Titles: 2 Clearly one of the nation’s top coaches, the salary is just a bit outsized compared to most other A-listers. Donovan's flirtation with the NBA Orlando Magic a few years ago didn't hurt his paycheck.

    Tom Crean

    Indiana University
    Salary: $2.3 million
    W-L: 245-170 (.590)
    Tournament Appearances: 5
    Final Fours: 1
Titles: 0 To be fair – Crean has the Hoosiers on the right track with a Sweet 16 appearance this year after three straight losing seasons that followed NCAA sanctions tied to his predecessor, Kelvin Sampson

    Oliver Purnell

    DePaul University
    Salary: $1.8 million
    W-L: 413-323 (.561)
    Tournament Appearances: 6
    Final Fours: 0
Titles: 0 After going 50-62 in ACC play during a seven-year run at Clemson, Purnell is trying to resurrect DePaul. It’s been slow going so far – he’s finished last in the Big East in each of his first two seasons.

    Sean Miller

    University of Arizona

    Salary: $2.3 million
    W-L: 188-81 (.699)
    Tournament Appearances: 5
    Final Fours: 0
Titles: 0 Miller has taken Xavier and Arizona to a combined five NCAA tournaments over the past seven years, including the Wildcats’ Elite Eight showing last year. But he makes about as much as the more accomplished Thad Matta and Roy Williams.

    Bill Self

    University of Kansas
    Salary: $3 million
    W-L: 473-157 (.751)
    Tournament Appearances: 14
    Final Fours: 1
Titles: 1 Similar to Donovan – Self is clearly a great coach, but the paycheck is a reach relative to the rest of the field.

    Mike Anderson

    University of Arkansas
    Salary: $2.2 million
    W-L: 218-113 (.659)
    Tournament Appearances: 6
    Final Fours: 0
Titles: 0 Lured by the Razorbacks in 2011 from Missouri, where he upgraded the talent base over his five years. Still looking for his first Final Four.

    Mark Turgeon

    University of Maryland
    Salary: $1.6 million
    W-L: 266-174 (.605)
    Tournament Appearances: 5
    Final Fours: 0
Titles: 0 Got a sweet to deal to jump from Texas A&M this year to replace the retired Gary Williams. Turgeon took the Aggies to four straight tourneys but never past the second round.

  • This article completely ignores the fact that Cal's Memphis team vacated that final four? Cool.

  • Oliver Prunell, Mike Anderson, Beline, and Mark Turgeon are probably the only ones who belong on this list.
