This Ozzie Guillen situation

  • mentalstate said...

    Exactly.

BTW, many Cubans have a very personal reason for how they feel, based on life & death situations. They aren't complaining over simple politics.

this. many cubans have direct family members that were tortured and/or killed by this regime. calling those people butt hurt is pretty insensitive and extremely naive.

He can have an opinion, he'll probably just lose his job for it. The Marlins aren't exactly the beloved baseball franchise around here and they have enough of a PR problem with attendence and the cost of the stadium to the taxpayer. Now, with Cubans being about 70% of the population in Miami-Dade, where teh Miami Marlins play, they have just been insulted. Any other manager could have said this and gotten away with it, but not one in Miami. A team that is seen as cheap, locally, just took a potshot at 80% of its core audience. This is why I said I think it is the same thing as a coach coming to MSU and saying they respect and love Schembechlar or Bo Ryan. Anywhere else in the country it might be ok to say that, just probably not in E. Lansing.

It's not the same thing at all. Dantonio has already stated that he respects the UM football program.

If you wanted to make an analogy that actually worked you would have to use a context in which a specific group of people are murdered by a person that you are expressing appreciation of. A good example would be someone saying that they respected Hitler's desires for Germany to be strong...a statement like that would result in outrage by Jewish people because the core of Hitler's program for Germany to be strong again was eugenics.

Your sports analogies are in poor taste.

You keep using the word "love" an conflating it with "respect."

This is EXACTLY why I think this is overblown and ridiculous -- stupid people who don't understand the difference between "love" and "respect" are being stupid.

FOR EXAMPLE: I don't "love" Michigan basketball but I can "respect" the fact they earned a share of the regular season Big Ten Championship.

    See how that works?

Is this a really big deal? I don't know much about Cuban Americans perception of Fidel Castro. Dan LeBatard said Fidel is to Cuban Americans as Hitler is to jewish people. I guess a lot of people in Miami want Guillen out.

Yes, it is horrible. I have always liked the guy for his honestly, but this is beyond insensitive. Don't know what he was thinking. He was/is their Hitler. Wow.

If every minority got offended every time someone made an offensive remark, they would lose their minds.

Instead, many grow thicker skin and realize that words have as much power as the power you give them.

When exactly did we decide to allow alleged victims to be judge and jury over their own cases?

I'm quite aware of the history, thank you very much. But the insane politics of Miami should indicate to any reasonable person that the Castro thing is not an instance where the accuser's voice helps to clarify matters.

From the actual article. Is respect spelled l-o-v-e in your world?

"I love Fidel Castro," Blurts Ozzie Guillen, the new manager of the Miami Marlins, in his Jupiter, Fla., spring-training office before an early-March team workout.

I don't doubt that you are right. Castro is indeed the "Hitler" of the Miami Cubans.

But that says more about the Miami Cubans than it does Casto. Namely, that they are insane.

The article I read said he "respects" Fidel Castro.

"I respect Fidel Castro," Guillen said in the article. "You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that [expletive] is still here."

Obviously, my whole set of arguments would have no logical merit if the facts I based them on were inaccurate.

I don't understand all your hate. I have no dog in this fight, just sayin it might not be wise to insult your core audience and the people you want buying your tickets. You need to know your market a bit better. Sheesh, and whether or not it gets miscontrued or not no longer matters once it gets into public opinion. I'll try to watch the news tonight and let you know how the people of Miami feel, politics or not.

The "politics" of Miami are irrelevant. There is no "judge and jury". People are threatening to withhold their $$$ if he isn't fired, not lynch him in Little Havana. That is within their rights.

I'd love to see you call my father-in-law an "alleged" victim to his face. lol

Of course, if there's one thing you don't say in Miami, it's "I love Fidel Castro" — which are the first four words from Guillen in Gregory's article.

This is the Internet. Were we discussing this in real life, I highly doubt you'd think I hated your opinion.

I agree that Ozzie is unwise (much of my reason for despising him,) but given my facts at the time, I think it's stupid to be worked up over words from a guy with a known history of verbal instigation.

If I am to understand your threat correctly, your father in law would beat me up for not taking as gospel whatever he happened to say about Cuba. I should just shut up and listen, or else he would kick my ass. Got it.

I'm not sure why you put politics in scare quotes. OF COURSE the politics of Miami are relevant. It's why Ozzie got in trouble in the first place.

Not trying to flame, but I don't understand the point you're trying to make here and in your previous post. Are you saying that a majority of Cuban-Americans living in Miami don't really hate Castro, but play along with the politics in order to blend in with their neighbors? Or are you saying that Castro is a good guy and Cubans who hate him are just political sheep?

He said he 'respected' Castro because people have been trying to kill him for decades and he's still around.

Butthurt Cuban-Americans interpret 'respect' as 'love' and claim he said, "I love Castro."

Obviously, butthurt Cuban-Americans are butthurt. They have zero understanding of the difference between 'respect' and 'love.'

What's really funny about many of those Cuban-Americans (many of whom are SECOND generation Cuban-Americans) is that if Fidel wasn't there, they'd totally go back to Cuba. I can understand if you're first generation and want to go back, but how can one rationalize having this attitude if you're born in America?

I'm saying that there are reasonable conclusions that one can reach that lie between these two poles. And further, that reason is often not welcome in this debate because of group think.
