I started a separate thread about this but no on commented so I thought I would bring it over here to see if you guys think this is related.

We noticed in the opening short film (at the beginning of the Opening Ceremonies) when they were flashing the Olympiad posters up on the screen, there were three Olympic games were omitted......1936 Berlin (I guess for obvious reasons), 1984 L.A. and 1996 Atlanta. All of the other games had their official posters shown on the screen.

What the fuck is that all about? They left in the 1932 L.A. games. Could this omission related to the whole flag dipping controversy?

Mrs. Pantusso noticed, I didn't believe her until we rewound it and watched on slow motion. Each poster was only up for a few seconds so you had to look closely.

If they left in 1932, it wasn't a USA thing.

Not the flag, but she took a pull from a Kodiak tin at one point.

  • As a Brit living over here for 15 years now, and with season tickets to the Broncos and Rapids, I always stand for your national anthem, take my hat off, and make my boy do the same. At the July 4th game I had tears in my eyes over the flag spread across the field, the jets over head, and the crowd singing. And I sobbed during the minute of silence on Tuesday for the dead in Aurora.

I'm sure it's fun for idiots like Vargman to talk tough about flags and such, but the Olympics is a celebration of humanity, not nationality. If only folks like him could grow up, the true message of this wonderful event could ring true thumbsup.

nope it has nothing to do with nationality...that's why we split up into teams based on what nation we live in and compete and it's a huge deal to be the country that wins the most medals. we aren't bucking 80 years of tradition and dipping the flag just cuz some dipshit olympic committee guy thinks we should.

Olympics is a celebration of humanity

While de Coubertin may have had that
sort of idealism in mind, the IOC and the instrumental intentions of (some) previous hosts have made the Games seem more political than anything.

Well said. And yes, we are teamed up by nationality... and then all put together to have friendly competition. Some of you guys are completely unaware of what the Olympics is about. It's pretty clear.

it's a celebration of nationality and humanity...you can't say it's not a celebration of nationality because that's precisely what a large part of it is. if it wasn't all the countries would just go draft teams and compete together. Cym said it wasn't a celebration of nationality but it is, it's also much more but you can't ignore that large part

As much as I want to believe that the Olympics are purely about athletic competition, and serve as some sort of pacifying event in world politics, they are more than that.

They are about humanity, yet they are a branding event for large corporations. They are about humanity, yet the international body that controls Olympic competition is absolutely corrupt. They are about humanity, yet they were an arena for Cold War politics. They are about humanity, yet many hosts have wanted them for purely political reasons.

I love the Games. I see the humanity you speak of in the performances of athletes, but the Games have also been spoiled by politics, and that happened long ago.

I'll +1 that for the insight, and I partially agree. But this is getting off topic. On a side note... NBC's Facebook Page is getting major heat for how disrespectful their coverage was. Apparently doing damage control and deleting comments everywhere. Pretty miserable. I think we can all agree on that. I'm seeing that they didn't show something in the show about the Terrorist attacks or some such thing. Anyone who watched it outside the States know about that?

  • "So in the end, the cauldron is not lit by a lone Olympian from the past, but by seven teenagers whose days of glory are surely yet to come. The torches ignite the copper petals; the petals in turn ignite the cauldron. It is a masterstoke, a dazzling end to a night of wonders and a glorious salute to the democratic spirit of Olympics; enshrining these games as a collective endeavour and a celebration of emerging talent."

    Wonderful.

Some people can't just celebrate the USA. All of us being Americans and cheering on our fellow countrymen and women to kick some ass isn't good enough. They have to get all butthurt and interject their whining about politics.

exactly. we have 1,440 days to argue about politics, but only 20 days to come together as a Nation and kick ass and prove that The USA is #1!

The United States doesn't dip its flag for any leader - that includes US president.

Regrettably, individuals who want the United States to dip its flag for the Queen or any other Earthly leader want this to happen for their own arrogant and obnoxious reasons. Humanity would never be uplifted nor tarnished by a flag bearer's walking around a track at the opening games of the olympics. Suggesting such is silly, or if serious, symptomatic of a distorted and misguided world view.

It is really sad to see a grown man, such as you claim to be, to fuss and whine over a custom that has no tangible significance...however, it is not surprising.
