I'm not a greek, never was, but Otter put it best when he said, "But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Viggo - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!

With regards to primarily 'social' fraternities/sororities, I never understood the point of wanting to be insulated by a large group of people who are almost exactly like me. It wreaks of insecurity, in my opinion.
Call me crazy, but I like having friends who are diverse and unlike me. Naturally, my best friends (about a handful of them) are very much like me in terms of interests/perspectives/race, but that doesn't preclude me from having a wide variety of good friends with whom I can seek common ground.
I find it troubling that the mentality of striving to be homogeneous within society gets in the way of people realizing they're mostly no different/better than the next person.
I still stand by my previous post.

This made me curious so I had to wikipedia it. For what it's worth:
Fifty-five to seventy percent of gang rape perpetrators belong to fraternities. Eighty-six percent of off-campus attempted rape or sexual assaults are at fraternity houses.[11]...There are higher incidents of gang rape within fraternities for many reasons: peer acceptance, alcohol use, the acceptance of rape myths and viewing women as sexualized objects, as well as the highly masculinized environment. The Neumann study found that fraternity members are more likely than other college students to engage in rape.[11] Part of the prevalence of fraternity rape may be due to the fact that some colleges do not have complete control over the privately-owned fraternity houses.[2]

Its the same as the self loathing Spartans who say "oh I could have gotten into Michigan, but I didn't want to go there"
You join a fraternity because you want to go there... there are three reasons people don't join them:
1. They don't try to join
2. They try to join and are rejected.
3. They are accepted but can't afford it.Sparty is our mascot, we are Spartans.

Only the ones who act like their degree is inadequate compared to one from that school. I always tell Ann Arbor alums who try to belittle my degree from MSU "I had no interest in that school, didn't bother applying, I only ever wanted to be a Spartan"

I met and became good friends with several people from backgrounds I never would have met or given a chance without the context of the fraternity. I would argue my post college friends are much more homogenized than my brothers. But you wouldn't have any clue about that, there is a stereotype and you buy into it.

wow, after reading some of these things about other fraternities, it makes me glad i joined mine. it's given me life-long friends that i probably wouldn't have meet had i not joined, and it has also led to me getting my current job (and possible summer internship out in aspen).
