This is why I never joined a frat

  • Do people who don't like frats also hate all guy school or all girl schools? Really...I am just asking because they are definitely similar in many ways.

I'm not a greek, never was, but Otter put it best when he said, "But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Viggo - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!

    lol

Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be brief. The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party guests - we did.

    Exactly.

People treat them like they're some special and unique group. They're not. They're just organizations. The one I was affiliated with seemed to be organized around laziness and debauchery.

Did you get a Ph.D. in redundancy?

With regards to primarily 'social' fraternities/sororities, I never understood the point of wanting to be insulated by a large group of people who are almost exactly like me. It wreaks of insecurity, in my opinion.

Call me crazy, but I like having friends who are diverse and unlike me. Naturally, my best friends (about a handful of them) are very much like me in terms of interests/perspectives/race, but that doesn't preclude me from having a wide variety of good friends with whom I can seek common ground.

I find it troubling that the mentality of striving to be homogeneous within society gets in the way of people realizing they're mostly no different/better than the next person.

I still stand by my previous post.

Further proof that many people that weren't in fraternities often have no clue what they are talking about.

This made me curious so I had to wikipedia it. For what it's worth:

Fifty-five to seventy percent of gang rape perpetrators belong to fraternities. Eighty-six percent of off-campus attempted rape or sexual assaults are at fraternity houses.[11]...There are higher incidents of gang rape within fraternities for many reasons: peer acceptance, alcohol use, the acceptance of rape myths and viewing women as sexualized objects, as well as the highly masculinized environment. The Neumann study found that fraternity members are more likely than other college students to engage in rape.[11] Part of the prevalence of fraternity rape may be due to the fact that some colleges do not have complete control over the privately-owned fraternity houses.[2]

    Figures.

Its the same as the self loathing Spartans who say "oh I could have gotten into Michigan, but I didn't want to go there"

You join a fraternity because you want to go there... there are three reasons people don't join them:

    1. They don't try to join
    2. They try to join and are rejected.
    3. They are accepted but can't afford it.

    Wtf does this mean?

You are calling out MSU alums?

I met and became good friends with several people from backgrounds I never would have met or given a chance without the context of the fraternity. I would argue my post college friends are much more homogenized than my brothers. But you wouldn't have any clue about that, there is a stereotype and you buy into it.

  • wow, after reading some of these things about other fraternities, it makes me glad i joined mine. it's given me life-long friends that i probably wouldn't have meet had i not joined, and it has also led to me getting my current job (and possible summer internship out in aspen). to say we're a "club" is asinine. clubs are groups of people brought together by a common hobby. Fraternities are founded upon the betterment of each member socially, academically, and morally. of course there's going to be some that care only about getting hammered and acting like the "typical" frat boy that we've seen in Hollywood, but that's not what all of us are about. sure we like to get drunk and have a good time (who doesn't?), but we're more than that. i can't speak about the other fraternities, but i know that we've always got each others' backs, no matter what the situation is.

Only the ones who act like their degree is inadequate compared to one from that school. I always tell Ann Arbor alums who try to belittle my degree from MSU "I had no interest in that school, didn't bother applying, I only ever wanted to be a Spartan"

  • Having gone to a school that is considered the "Mother of Fraternities", I think to say Frats are just as concerned with GDIs (God Damn Independts) as GDIs are concerned with frats. Hint them even giving GDIs a nickname.

I didn't mean for you to be defensive about it.

I think it's great you met people who were unlike you. I think many organizations within the Greek system do great things for the community. However, I think overall (correct me if I'm wrong,) most 'social' organizations within the Greek system strive to be exclusive for exclusivity's sake -- which to me, wreaks of insecurity.

Of course that remark I made could be applicable to any group or club. Take any ethnic or religious based student group and you'll find similar levels of community service under the guise of homogeneous behavior.

I guess I'm of the mindset that one doesn't need to be judged (nor should they feel compelled to be judged) by social status, religious background, ethnic background, or financial status to have a good time or benefit the community.

I was not in a Fraternity and also did the same thing. Was also able to network to lead me to my current job and many of the interviews I received. Not trying to belittle everyone goes about it a different way. Fraternity aren't for everyone and that is why you have a choice to join it or not. Some people benefit from it, while other do not. I know plenty of kids that benefited from having that group of people around them, while I also know my fair share that became douches and ruined a lot of there other friendships because they did not want to associate with people not in their fraternity or were GDIs.
