This writer thinks the NBA should trim teams.

  • By getting rid of the teams that lose money. Meaning bye-bye Indiana, Milwaukee, Charlotte, New Orleans, Atlanta, Sacramento, Memphis and Minnesota.

    ESPN NBA should consider contraction

Bucks even more so. Kareem was drafted by Milwaukee originally and they were a power in the 1970's and after with Sidney Moncrief.

  • And of course the best answer is that the writer is correct.

The NBA should get rid of teams.

This year they did it right, they got rid of all of them.

Does anybody really miss this garbage?

One of the things in the new CBA they are currently negotiating is putting a minimum age to be in the NBA at 20 years. That should benefit both the NBA and the NCAA. It will keep talent in the NCAA longer and force it to spread around because the top few teams can't keep reloading with 4 or 5 McDonald's All-Americans every year. It will also help the NBA because that gives the kids with NBA physical talent to truly develop into NBA players before they get to the NBA.

I think the NBA game could REALLY benefit from college kids with more experience.

Although I agree, people here in Indiana really don't give a shit about the Pacers. College and high school is what hoosiers like.

A lot of people since it's the second most watched sport in the U.S... Plus people watched the "garbage" more last year than any other time in NBA history (yes more than the MJ years).

  • Be aware that whenever you read/hear anybody talking seriously about "contraction" in any at least purportedly "major league" sport, by definition the speaker is an idiot, ignoramus, imbecile, moron, nitwit, ninny, ninconpoop, etc etc etc.

    Why? Well here's why, bunkie.

The major profit generator in all "major league" professional sports is franchise appreciation. You buy the franchise in Year X for $XX million dollars, then you sell it in Year X+10 for $XXX million dollars.

More than any other factor, more than all other factors put together, franchise appreciation is totally dependent on the assumption the franchise is ***going to continue to exist.***

The minute any franchise in any given pro sports league is contracted, that assumption goes straight down the shitter and the resale value for every other franchise instantaneously plunges. Some more than other but even the Cadillac franchises would take huge hits, because the bedrock assumption the team will continue to exist has just vanished like a fart in the wind.

Plus it totally destroys any incentive any prospective owner might have to pay megamillions for an expansion franchise in the future. Why the hell would anyone pay multi-hundred million bucks for an expansion franchise when the league might pull the plug on you in 8 years? You contract franchises, you won't get chicken-scratch for expansion fees for 20 years or more.

That's why the various "major" leagues have taken over failing franchises and operated themselves when a buyer cannot be found at any particular moment. Even though it costs everybody in the league millions in the short run, it would cost hundreds of millions in the long run to fold them.

Occasionally commissioners will make ominous threats about it but they will never ever ever do it. It's just posturing bullshit to try to scare players unions ("sign the deal now or we start contracting teams") .

Whenever a pro sports league actually does start folding teams, it is not long for the world (see the WNBA).

  • Expansion worked out great for the NHL as well. Fricking idiots.

  • Contraction makes sense here because the league is loosing money and the franchises are already losing value because of it. The Pistons sale price was never released because the NBA kept that quiet because of how much the value fell.

A ideal situation would be to contract 4 teams and move one to Las Vegas. It's time to get over the whole "Betting" on teams issue. This isn't 1971 and the Mob isn't strong-arming a player to throw a game. Put a Franchise in LV and it would open up more markets for the NBA. The Sacramento Kings would make perfect sense to move to Las Vegas. The Maalof brothers already operate out of Vegas, and the name would make sense with the gambling aspect of Las Vegas.

Kill Minnesota, Memphis, Atlanta, and New Orleans. You have a supplemental draft and teams can draft from the 60 players available. This would allow the other teams to increase there talent pool, and make the league a stronger product. Yes, some people will lose their jobs as players, but a job in the NBA is not a right.

So you would go from what the NBA is now to a leaner, more financially stable, and better product for fans. You finally have a team in Las Vegas that would be decent based on the supplemental draft. All of this would increase the value of the NBA teams, and would help the league in the long run.

I think because Indiana is about high school and college--not superstar whine-babies. The league could cease to exist, and I couldn't care less. It would help the college game because all of a sudden all the players would forget about going pro and the really talented ones would take up football or something. College basketball is starting wear on me, too. It's becoming NBA lite.

Replace hotlanta with the bobcats and I'd buy that. Atlanta has a lot of basketball fans that want a winning team. That ownership has screwed it up, the right owner and everything will be fine.

New Orleans, Atlanta, Sacramento, and Memphis to the Big XII. UT & OU not happy about becoming a basketball conference and threaten to jump to the NFC South.
