Thoughts about the 2012-13 season?

  • 2chins 1hoke said...

Izzo isn't going to waste a full year of developing Appling at the point. He will be the starting PG until he graduates, no doubt about it.

Thats very possible, and I was ignoring for maybe my own selfish reasons of moving him back to the 2 bc he was not producing this year as he should of :P

Either way, hopefully he makes some strides in his game over the summer!

Harris will NOT play the point. Unless it's for a possession here or there.

    Riddle me this.

Where does Harris play if Trice is running the point and Appling is running the 2?

Why is this so difficult to grasp? Dawson has been told he isn't playing the 4.

Somebody is gonna have to come off the bench, and if it were up to me (which it clearly isn't) I'd have Harris coming off, although I do agree with you that most likely Keith will still run point and Harris start at SG.

Not with Dawson on the floor.

Thank goodness there is another reasonable poster or 2 in this thread. Dawson will be at the 3, Harris at the 2 and Appling at the point. Izzo rewards seniority and will not sit or move Appling when he sacrificed moving to the 1 for the team this year just because you all want him to. Trice and Valentine will get whatever minutes Keith does not play at the 1.

Everyone who wants to move Appling off the ball is forgetting the defensive end of the floor.

Valentine is a legit 6-4 and fairly big. Having him and Appling in the backcourt wouldn't be a problem on the defensive side.

  • 1 Appling / Trice
    2 Harris / Kearney
    3 Dawson / Valentine
4 ?? (Guana / Costello / Kamniski) whoever defends and rebounds will play. All 3 are supposed to be pretty good pick and pop shooters.
    5 Payne / Nix

This will be the most important summer for Gauna and Byrd. Next year will be their 3rd year in the program. If they don't step up they will get passed by.

    Agreed...

one other question, during this season, were Trice and Appling ever on the court at the same time/play together?

That's what I kind've meant by his "vibe" in the half court. He just is not fit for that position...I agree with him being the PG this season, but not next year.... he needs to be switched to a 2...here's a good line up like someone else mentioned...

    PG: Trice/Valentine 2: Appling/Harris/Kearney 3: Dawson/Kearney 4/5: Nix/Payne/Costello

...For starters, then filling in depending who develops during the off season. Going to a whole different team again with Draymond gone....

Haven't read the thread for the most part until this. Whether you're right or wrong long-term...JFC is our future bright...

  • Like I stated earlier, we have Final Four talent next year. leadership is what I have issues with.

I'm curious to see who will pick up Day Day's points, rebounds, assists etc...

    Thoughts?

Dawson for rebounds and half of his points. We'll mostly be missing his leadership as we have zero true leaders next year. I like Trice to start taking the leader role.

They were, but that has been since Dawson's injury mostly. With Valentine and Harris coming, Izzo does not have to go with that small back court.

yea, I'm excited whatever way this pans out, Izzo will figure things out.

Abit worried about leadership, hopefully Appling can be more vocal next year rant

Byrd especially, it would be great to consistently have a 6'7" threat from 3 point land.

Today or all year? Well, Keith played about 30-35 minutes per game and Trice played about 15, so yes, they played at the same time a lot this year. But much moreso once Dawson went down.

  • Nix will assume leadership role next year per him, lol. I hope he does the same thing like he did at Pershing in 08-09.

  • These are facts:

Harris will start from Day 1.
Dawson will not play the 4.
Appling will start the season at PG, however I could see Valentine and Trice pushing him for that spot if he shows he hasn't improved over the summer.

    5- Nix/Payne
    4- Costello
    3- Dawson
    2- Harris
    1- Appling

For the first time in what seems forever, MSU will have a bench that's deep, talented, athletic and not filled with walk-ons (no offense to those guys). Trice, Kearney and Valentine should be solid off the bench as guards. I also think Kaminski and Gauna will be solid as well for the bigs. Overall, this team has top 5 talent. It all comes down to how well they gel and who steps up as a leader. I'm really hoping Izzo decides to take them on that summer trip so they can get some extra practice time in.

We're not Kentucky, we don't care about the NBA! If he moves to PG in the NBA then fine but if we, the MSU Spartans, want to be most successful he should play the 2.

For the MSU spartans to be most successful, Appling should play the one. Appling is better than Trice at every faucet of the game expect for shooting. Next season, MSU should be able to run more with better athletes on the wing and Appling is the better PG in transition. And late in the shot clock, Appling is able to get into the lane and create for himself and others. On offense, Trice never showed much, outside of being a great jump shooter.

Byrd is broken. With the amount of wings coming in next year he has to fix himself quickly or accept a Dahlman role. If not, he probably transfers.

  • Remember that Appling didn't have a ton of time this summer to spend in the gym by himself working on individual skills. He was with USA basketball overseas (which was a great accomplishment and experience for him) but with a full offseason we could see the improvement in his game to become an elite level guard. He really is an absolutely phenomenal athlete and if he gets his shot back then I have confidence in him leading this team. I also liked what I saw in Rexrode's blog about how upset he was after the game. I think it is just his natural demeanor on the court that can frustrate some people into thinking he doesn't care or whatever but clearly he does.

Appling is great in transition, not denying that. I just think he turns it over too much and forces everything, plus he can't shoot. I'm hoping Trice can improve in the off-season because as of right now, I agree with what you are saying, but hopefully he can get more comfortable running the O and I'd like to see him start at PG.

Much easier for guards to make the transition than bigs.

And Dawson improved quickly. He had become a legit bitch before going down with the injury.

I'm not saying Harris will be an All-American. But he will be a B1G starter, and a productive one, immediately.

If we had more reliable/athletic wings and PFs besides him I think he could've benefited from coming off the bench.

And I'm not saying he didn't have a solid season, I'm saying he wasn't quite a 'superstar' and it definitely took him time before he started getting it all together.
