I think Betemit's throw to 2nd last night solidified Inge's spot.

As much as I hate Inge, Betemit is complete garbage in the field. Gotta have Inge.

UM, Green Bay and Chicago teams all have one thing in common: They all suck

He was never going to keep his son off the roster.

  • 26 active players made the trip to New York (plus Boesch, but he's just travelling).

They took 14 position players and 12 pitchers, but plan on keeping only 11 pitchers on the postseason roster so it seems like it's going to come down to Pauley vs. Penny for the last spot, with my guess being that Penny makes it.

As the last pitcher on the roster I would be surprised if either actually pitches a meaningful inning, but Penny gives you a little flexibility. They have plenty of late inning relievers with Benoit, Valverde, Alburquerque and Coke so whoever makes it between Penny/Pauley would end up as a middle reliever. In the event that a starter gets bombed early Penny would be able to go longer to save the rest of the bullpen for the next game.

Clues emerge regarding Tigers' playoff roster | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

Based on the Tigers who made the trip to New York, it appears the club has picked its 14 position players for its playoff series against the Yankees and must make one decision about pitching.

I don't have any problem with Penny making it. As you said, if someone gets shelled early, that's exactly what he can do. Come in and eat up some innings.

Not sure what the big problem is with having him over Ron Paul-ey.

Exactly, neither guy is going to change the series.

The decision to keep 11 pitchers and the injuries to Boesch and Guillen really made it pretty easy to pick the 14 position players.

Patrick Leyland? He's still a good 5 years away from the Big Leagues. Hopefully he makes the cut at West Michigan next year.

We knew Inge made the roster as soon as Danny Worth headed down to Lakeland to stay fresh. Rhymes obviously wasn't going to make it with Santiago and Raburn being so hot, and Kelly isn't a defensive replacement at 3rd base (or anywhere other than 1B and maybe LF)

If true, then Perry must be off. Can't think of any other way Penny, Pauley, Santos all make it.

I've got no problem with Inge on the roster. I wanted Kelly on the roster and wondered if it would have been Kelly for Inge. Looks like they both are on.

  • I was almost exactly right in another thread from yesterday. Santos is on, I don't know who is out.

Penny makes sense when you think about it, and Leyland's thought process. Also, I'd rather have Penny out there to mop up if they are, for some reason, getting blown out.

He's also a vet, with playoff experience. That's why he's there for long relief over Below.

I was wrong on Santos vs. Rhymes. I still don't quite get it if Jim was honest about Victor's ability to catch. Fact is if Avila goes down the Tigers are F'd anyway. I'd rather have a better pinch hit/pinch run option on the bench.

    Buzzer Beater

  • From yesterday (don't know who is off for Santos yet that's where I was wrong. Maybe they went 12/13?) :

In 2006, the Tigers went 11 pitchers and 14 position players. I think they'll go 12/13 this season.

    Position players:
OF: Jackson, Young, Ordonez, Raburn, Dirks - (5)
IF: Cabrera, Peralta, Kelly, Betimit, Inge, Santiago (6)
    C/DH: Martinez, Avila (2)

Could be in trouble if Avila gets injured early in a series, but the Tigers have been playing that game for a while now.

    Pitchers
Startes: Verlander, Fister, Scherzer, Porcello (4)
    Setup: Coke, Benoit (2)
    Closer: Valverde (1)
Relief: Schlereth, Albuquerque, Perry, Penny (4)

I put Penny on the play-off roster only because of experience. I think that will trump when deciding between Below and Pauley, though I don't expect him to be used much (mop up duty if the Tigers are getting blown out or something...)

If the Tigers go 11/14, drop Penny and add Omir Santos. I think they only go 11/14 if they are worried about the potential of Avila getting injured. I think they'll decide that they need/want that emergency extra long arm/experience in the play-offs and go 12/13.

    So last four in:
    1. Penny
    2. Inge
    3. Dirks
    4. Raburn

Though outside of Penny, there really wasn't any danger of 2-4 being left off the play-off roster unless injury.

    Last four off:
    1. Santos
    2. Guillen
    3. Ryhmes
    4. Pauley

  • Can the players that didn't make it, but traveled (Pauley, Guillen) still watch from the dugout?
