Tigers Trade Deadline Thread

  • With Maholm going to the Braves, is there any way Dempster isn't a Dodger tomorrow?

    Spartan Butters

  • Quick twitter round up:

-Soriano has told the Cubs he won't go to the Giants.
    -Yorvit Torrealba has been DFA'd
-Jayson Stark reporting that an exec. told him there's a very high chance Garza is traded. That the Blue Jays have been bearing down on him.

Sounds like the Cubs are in complete fire sale mode.

Update: Rosenthal says a deal for Garza with the Reds could be in the works.

This shouldn't be a surprise. However, I'm actually happy and surprised the Cubs were able to deal Soto. Hard to believe Dempster is still around.

The RCMB...is one of the most awful, alarming, inappropriate, disgusting, and offensive msg boards in the history of the internet.

It sounds like Dempster is tricky. I understand he is dying to be in LA. His family lives in Vancouver and I believe one of his children has a rare disease and he wants to be closer. The Braves offered the Cubs more than the Dodgers, but Dempster really only wants to go to LA.

  • I know he's struggling this year but maybe Justin Upton could be had on the cheap. I'm for anything that would get Delmon out of dodge. Maybe a change of scenery would ignite Upton?

The Diamondbacks have said they don't intend on trading him mid season. Even if they did want to move them, I don't think the Tigers could make the deal without Castellanos. I just don't see them biting on a package centered around Boesch and Smyly.

I understand, im not in favor of including Castellanos in any deal involving Upton alone, but maybe another player (except Castellanos) plus a draft pick and/or cash. We'll see, but if its all hands on deck this year...something has to get done to add a right handed bat IMO.

the only draft pick that can be traded was included in the Marlins deal. Unless something changed recently, you cant trade standard draft picks, only the new comp picks.

Go Bears, Blackhawks, White Sox, and Pioneers. Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand

yeah, but the pick was swapped, not sure of the rule on that. Didnt they swap spots? I could be confused...

It was. I believe the Tigers pick is now between the sandwich and 2nd round and the Marlins is between the 2nd and 3rd round.

This is correct, Detroit moved up from in between the 2nd and 3rd rounds to the 1st and 2nd rounds.

And you can only trade those picks once, so now the picks can no longer be traded.

Anthopolous just got fleeced. Trading a 24 year old who finally may have figured things out for a 27 year old journey man middle reliever?

  • 10:57am: The Tigers have considered Alfonso Soriano, but don't think he's a great fit, Knobler reports (on Twitter). They asked about Scott Hairston, but the Mets wanted one of the Tigers' top five prospects in return.

10:24am: The Tigers are seeking a middle-of-the-order hitter in the wake of discouraging news on Victor Martinez's recovery from knee surgery, writes Danny Knobler of CBS Sports. Martinez is said to be 50-50 to return this year, so the Tigers are "looking hard" for another bat.

  • Dodgers scoop Victorino and are rumored to still be in on Dempster. The Victorino deal rules out the possibility of the Cubs packaging Soriano with Dempster.

The Rangers allegedly are in on Dempster too. He could be a good option for them since they seem adverse to dealing Profar and Olt.

Tigers are still looking for a middle of the order bat. They don't see Soriano as a fit and the Mets asked for a top 5 prospect in return for Scott Hariston.

  • I think they realize that the current lineup (absent Victor's return) may get them into the playoffs but is unlikely to get them far once they get there.

Anything can and does happen once you get into the playoffs. Did you think StL would go far last year? How about SF in 2010?

Ok then why are they looking to deal.

After all according to your post all they have to worry about is finishing ahead of the White Sox.

take a chance on upton turning things around with a change of scenery. i bet they would give him away for a salary dump and a bag of slightly used baseballs

My only reservation with Upton is how much money he is owed over the next 3 years ($9.75MM/14.25MM/14.5MM). That contract along with Fielder's, Cabrera's, Verlander's and V Mart's you have 86.75MM on the books for 2013 and 92.25MM for 2013. After watching the Phillies this season I'd be real cautious in having $90MM+ invested in 5 guys.
