Tipping Housekeeping when you leave a hotel.

  • Jet Rodriguez said...

Just out of curiosity how many of you tippers are 35+ years old?

    What's your point?

  • I alwyas leave 'em a buck or two per day. Being a housekeeper is one of the shittier, exhausting, backbreaking jobs a woman (they're almost always women) can have; $5-$10 means a hell of a lot more to them than it does to me.

  • We took the kids to Disney the other year. All the kids caught a flu bug, and projectile vomited and, in the case of our infant, crapped (via blow-outs) everywhere in our hotel room. I left a $20 tip for the maid, and saw a sparkling room the next day (and no additional charges).

I just think this might be a generational thing was curious if the tippers were generally older people. I would never tip a hotel maid unless I absolutely destroyed a hotel room.

  • Just tip the person....sheesh.

I tip a five per night left out each morning. It's five effing bucks. The maid is happy, the room gets some extra attention maybe, it isn't going to make or break me. Everyone wins.

    And I am over 35.

  • Just the tip...just for a minute...to see how it feels

  • I just feel like tipping is an annoying practice in general. Basically you are saying "I know you are going to do a shitty job at your normal wage, but here's 5 bucks so you do above average work.". I would have no problem tipping if someone provided excellent service but I think too many people tip just because it's expected.

  • If I stay more than one day, then after Day 1 I leave a Magnum sized condom for her to see. I always get a very clean, nicely secented room after that.

  • My answer is yes, you should always tip the housekeeper unless you have a good reason not to. I go with $3 to $5 a day, depending on the hotel. Not tipping strikes me as rude and cheap. Yes, I'm over 35.

I'm 22. It's something I always saw my dad do and I kinda just made it a habit.

Remind yourself. Nobody built like you, you design yourself.

+1 for the use of "blow-outs." clap

This is my take as well, and I've started tipping less in general across the board. For example, I've stopped using a credit card at the bar and don't leave a tip every time I step up to get something. I also have started taking delivery fees into account when determining tip while ordering food for delivery. Sorry, but if I'm already paying $3 extra for you to deliver something, I'm not going to give you more than an extra buck on top of that. If you don't like that, take it up with your boss.

    Are you poor?

  • Speaking of Disney, if you leave a few bucks every morning with a handwritten note from your kid that says "Thank you Mousekeeper!" they'll usually fold your towels into cute little animal shapes that the kids get a kick out of. Sometimes they'll even make an elaborate scene with an extra sheet or two.

  • In Mexico I leave $3/day. Acutally 30 Pesos (about $2.50). It guarantees extra soap, towels, TP, etc. I leave it every day, and get super service every day. The senoritas need and appreciate it. I regurally tip the bartenders too.

I'm not (personally) rich, and I'm not poor. I just think tipping in this country is out of control, and I've made a conscious decision to allow others to subsidize the (poor) lifestyle decisions of people in the service industry.

Oooh Drugs Delaney, is THIS Nucky? Didn't see if the last screen name got banned but I see all of this dude's posts are from today and he's a douchecock so....

You should take this to the next step.

Whenever you begin your interactions with service industry people, you should inform them at the outset that you do not believe in subsidizing their lifestyle choices- that you leave that to others. WIth the understanding that you will not be tipping them, however, you expect to receive the full excellent service they are paid so handsomely to deliver by their employers. I'm sure they will respect your honesty and integrity and treat you well.

You should also inform them that they are in the current position because of their poor lifestyle decisions and that they should take it up with their manager about the poor tipping you will provide.

Do u leave a note stating its a tip? Just leaving money around doesn't make sense...

It's a common custom. Just because you don't know it doesn't make it odd. Does just leaving money on the bar without a note also seem odd to you?

    Achtung Baby

  • So the 16 dollars for the barber isn't enough already, now I have to tip the woman who does my bed and gets paid to do so. What the hell is going on? I understand tipping waiters/waitresses because they make less than like $3/hour, but the housekeeping? Too much.

What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...
