Im unsure of the point youre trying to make with these stats. Not many players improve their stats once they stop playing the Prairie Views of the world and start playing the OSUs and Purdues.

The point is get away from the 3pt line

  • As far as to why Green is getting scapegoated by some, well, people are disappointed and need someone to blame. For some, it's Izzo, others, Green, and for the truly deranged, it's Thornton, who is only out there because there's no one else around. In reality it's been a combination of injury (Lucas, Payne, Roe, Byrd), execution (failure to guard ball screens, ridiculously poor jump shooting) tactical (we're 30 games in and Green still doesn't have a position), and the biggest factor: the departures of Lucious and Allen. The departures caused problems everywhere else; extended minutes for Thornton and Kebler, the loss of two adequate jump shooters, the loss of one very good defender (Allen) and one who could at least pressure the ball (Lucious). Allen's departure also hurt Appling's offensive game, as he was forced to become the team's primary perimeter defender. You can call them excuses if you want, but they all happened. This team has not had a normal day, without someone hurt and the team at full capacity, since they got off the bus at the Kohl Center last year. They've tried to plug holes with varying (usually little) levels of success. People feel disappointed and angry. They are going to cast blame.

Realistic, logical and spot on analysis of this season. The only thing you didn't cover is Summers completely going into the tank. I know many call these excuses but no coach or team could overcome this many obstacles.

    This is a high-quality post.

Draymond Green, Magic Johnson, and Oscar Robertson are the only players to have two triple-doubles in the NCAA Tournament.

    Well said, Dave.

As for Summers, I think its clear he was the player mkst negatively effected by the loss of Allen and Lucious. Last year teams had to guard multiple perimeter threats. That left Summers standing wide open on the wing regularly. Now who does a team have to worry about outside of 18 feet?

Thanks, Fletch. I left the Summers stuff out because it's not really quantifiable, but your point is certainly a valid one. I also think his confidence was just shot, maybe as a result of the schedule and the early troubles, though he had his moments. Much as I'd like to blame the schedule, it was drawn up when Izzo thought he'd have all of his players.

Those who are hating on Draymond are pretty stupid.

When you replace Allen and Lucious with Thornton and Kebler you are in big trouble.

Blaming Draymond is how UM always blames the QB no matter how the game turns out or blaming Cecil Fielder when the pitchers can't get anyone out.

I call it "fringe fandom", those who love the Spartans but don't understand the game.

What he does in terms of points, rebounds and assists and all the other things at 6'6" is pretty amazing.

I now skip over the fringe fandom comments.

This is the most well thought out post I have ever seen Opti make.+1

  • Here are Draymond's final stats for the 2010-2011 season:

    12.6 pts, 8.6 rebs, 4.1 ast, 1.1 blk.

So let me say that again: Draymond Green is the only player in the power conferences from the past six seasons to average 12 pts, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 block per game.

And unlike Evan Turner and Terrence Williams, he'll be back for his senior season!

    GO GREEN!!!!!

I want you to realize how rare and special this dude is.

Draymond is currently averaging 12.2 pts, 8.3 rebs, and 4.0 ast per game.

This is almost impossible to do. He's one of only three guys to do it in a power conference in the past 6 seasons. The other two were lottery picks. Draymond isn't looking like a lottery pick yet, but for cryin' out loud give the guy his due. He is one special motherf****** baller.

    ****************************************************** PLAYERS WITH 12 pts, 8 Reb, 4 Ast Power conferences, 2006-2011

Draymond Green, Michigan State 2011 Evan Turner, Ohio State, 2010 Terrence Williams, Louisville 2009 None in 2006, 2007, or 2008

If you add the filter of averaging 1 block per game, you wipe out Turner and Williams, and Draymond is the ONLY ONE in the past six seasons to pull it off.

So let me say that again: Draymond Green is the only player in the power conferences from the past six seasons to average 12 pts, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 block per game.

The dude is a freakin renaissance man, and we fans should just thank our lucky stars that we get to cheer for him in the green and white.

Bread and Butter. Dancing Bear. Tragic Johnson. Straight ballin! . . .

Again, don't know how anyone can hate on this guy. He is a excellent player and unselfish.

Ok, Im gonna go out a limb here. His stats are great...on paper, but where is the stat that shows how many times he throws the ball away on a dumbass pass? Where is the stat where he is beat and cheating down the lane and slaps a guy on the wrist as he is scoring? His defense is non existent. As vocal as he is, he has a long way to go as a leader.

You're right: you did go out on a limb right there. It's true Draymond has flaws in his game and limitations to his physical abilities, but do you really have an overall negative feeling about him and what he gives to the team? That's what your post sounds like. The guy was our team MVP last year. His teammates honored him with the Glue & Guts award two (three?) years in a row. Why bag on a guy like that? Because he's not perfect? Down vote for you, Angus. thumbdown

Haha ok well this is random. I posted this shortly after the end of a very frustrating season. I am not a Green "Hater" I think he brings a lot to the team and tries to be a vocal leader. I think the things that frustrated me about Green last year at times had more to do with his head, rather than physical limitations as you say. Such as the errant passes from trying too hard to be like magic, and weak fouls after getting beat on defense. I am glad hes on our team and think he will have a great senior season.

UM, Green Bay and Chicago teams all have one thing in common: They all suck

    Clemenza

  • Draymond Green in the four seasons prior to last season, played on two state championship teams and two final four teams. He is the type of player who makes good teammates look very good which in turn makes him look better and results in the team succeeding, Last year he played on a team with underwhelming talent. If you don't have post players who can get position let alone catch the ball in close quarters and finish, the guy specializing in those type of passes is going to suffer. Giving the ball to Kalin Lucas and letting him free lance is just not enough offensive strategy. You have to keep trying to get it into the post even if the success rate of doing so is low. Just who are the other players you wanted to shoot, Durrel had an awful season. Keith Appling was inconsistent and more importantly went through long stretches when he didn't even want the ball. Basically that would leave more shots for Kalin and I think he had enough. If Green tried too hard it was because he had to because their was only one other guy on the team having a quality season and that guy tended to a selfish style. It is unfair, wrong and just plain ridiculous to say he was trying "to be like Magic," although if he had Greg Kelser and Jay Vincent to pass to if may have been an apt comparison. Take Draymond off that team and I hate to think what our record would have been.

This is a good comment and is still valid today, after one of Day Day's best performances and a landmark win for Coach.

Izzo has called Green "the perfect Spartan." I hope that anyone who did lay harsh criticism on Green has warmed to him and can now see what a great kid, a great player, and a great leader he is. He will certainly go down in Spartan history that way.
