Tom Izzo: a "weaker society" favors confidence over competence

  • Losing hard, close games teaches you how to win in March....

“If we’re that weak that we can’t take a loss or we can’t take the mental anguish that goes with it or the community is negative, we’re not going to be a good team anyway,” Izzo said. “So I have no panic on everything right now. I’m just disappointed that we didn’t play as well enough as I think we can.”

Michigan State's Tom Izzo: Difficult schedule, UConn loss will help Spartans build toward championship potential

The Spartans haven't won in big games at the start over the past two seasons, but as they face Kansas tonight in the Champions Classic, Izzo promised to continue challenging his teams with difficult schedules.

good read, though I would like to win some early game against a big team, just for the shot of confidence

    Begging for upvotes is sad.

  • Tom Izzo is an evil genius.

hoke- to alter or manipulate so as to give a deceptively or superficially improved quality or value.

  • Strong societies must demand excellence then.

  • Izzo: because of a “weaker society,” confidence can be seen as more important than competence.

This is such an awesome statement that I really am not sure exactly what it means.King1

  • Had this conversation last night. This is how Izzo rolls. Certainly he would like to win these early games, but far more important to him is building the team he needs to make a run in March. He always changes up the tempo, the sets, the playing time, who is playing together. He always has guys in there that we think are not ready. Izzo is using these games as a lesson to get better - as frustrating as that is for us fans, and it is damn frustrating. Buy now we should all be used to it though.

I love Coach Izzo. This is all that needs to be said. Let's go win tonight! If not.. it's not the end of the world but it would be darn good to get a win against a quality opponent. green_koolaid

Translation: "It is more important to think you're good than to actually be good." He'd rather run the team through the buzzsaw to make them come out a deadly weapon than shine them up and ask people to praise their beauty.

Good on 'im, I say. King1

  • Why is it so ridiculous to want to play a difficult nonconference schedule AND to win these tough games every once in a while? Almost as disturbing as the feelings of entitlement in the community are their opposite: that it's okay we lose these high profile early games every. damn. year. And the magical thinking that says it doesn't hurt our national reputation that this is always the case.

There's a whole thread full of difficult nonconference games we win on the front page. Just because you only choose to remember the losses doesn't mean there weren't any hard fought wins.

Hence the reason izzo loves my posting style: sheer toughness from all the abuse boners and how I do not let the rods and their direct suspension of enforcement of the guidelines when it comes to my post affect my gm one bit.

  • I don't get it.

If this was the case, wouldn't the competent always come out ahead?

In the real world, I don't see that as true.
