Despite some people chalking this up as a dumb college kid mistake, being charged with resisting arrest and felonious battery to a law enforcement officer is pretty serious shit.

The thing is that these are kids sometimes from bad neighborhoods and broken houses. They may be the first of their family and the only of their friends to go to college. So you can't expect them to just be totally different people all of a sudden.
But when it happens to someone like Rees its hilarious!

Rees grew up in a wealthy North Shore Chicago suburb. His dad played college football and was an assistant coach at Northwestern and UCLA.
He's not some hard-luck kid from the ghetto who grew up on the streets. I'm sure his parents high powered attorneys are working to get the felony charges reduced as we speak.

If Rees was drunk and tripped on his own feet falling into a cop. I've known cops who would call that assault

Those two were charged with misdemeanor crimes. This is a felony that should result in a big suspension at the very least. Dude assaulted a cop. Serious stuff, but I'm laughing because its ND.

Rees may get the felony charge dropped and plead guilty to a lesser crime, but in your example of Linthicum and Bullough, there was no felony charge to begin with.
While I understand the point you are trying to make, comparing a misdemeanor charge with a felony isn't exactly an apples to apples comparison.

To be fair, a LOT of people thought one of our basketball players driving under the influence of marijuana was no big deal. Now a lot of those same people are ready to send an ND player to the electric chair for running from and allegedly kneeing a cop.
Let's be honest - cops have a VERY liberal definition of "assaulting a police officer." Being drunk and trying to get away from someone who is tackling you could be interpreted as "assault."
All this being said - this is still humorous because it's not happening to us.

This! If they (the police) charge him with a felony, they will be over charging him. This could have happened to almost any college kid.
