Top 10 CBB Breakout Players for 2012-13

I understand Appling struggled on offense, but he was one of the best defenders in the Big Ten, if not the country. I don't understand how he hasn't broken out already. I guess the national consensus on our team was the Michigan State Draymond Greens.

He needs to shoot better. If he can hit the 3 at about 40% and hit his midrange around 50% he could be a stud.

I'm not sure what the OP is all worked up about. Here are the comments on Appling:
Keith Appling, Michigan State: Fans of college hoops already know Appling as Tom Izzo's defensively stalwart, fast-breaking point guard, and for good reason: The sophomore was a key contributor in Michigan State winning a share of the Big Ten title and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. But with the team's do-everything leader Draymond Green gone, and a batch of younger, less-experienced players rounding out the rotation, Appling has a chance to evolve from a nice complementary piece into one of the Big Ten's bona fide stars.
Pretty spot on to me. Keith has shown flashes of what he's capable of, but struggled offensively for a large stretch of B1G play. With Day Day gone, this is Keith's team. He will be an instant star nationally (which this article is suggesting) if his jumper improves.

I think the inconsistency was due to the switch from the 2 to the 1.

Freshman year: .436 FG%, .411 3pt%, .895 FT%
Sophomore year: .427 FG%, .250 3pt%, .788 FT%
He can shoot, as evident by his freshman percentages. But last year his shot was way off. It was either mental or something with the technique. But when even your FT% goes down over 10%... something is off.

He logged a lot of minutes, especially towards the end. I think he just was worn down.

Remember when he was terrified to shoot against Louisville? One of the strangest displays of hoops playing I've seen in a while. Yes, he did hit a few later (thank goodness) but that may explain the perception and the need to "break out".

This is the RCMB. Where an article saying a Spartan could become a star is considered negative.

You could literally say that about any player. What he needs (and really needed last year) is another playmaker in the backcourt with him, and he will have that this year.

This past year Keith's defense was superb, and his ball handling was markedly improved, as it needed to be for the teams success. I suspect this summer his goal is to improve his shooting, and it would be nice to have the luxury of letting him play the 2 full time this upcoming year. I am really looking forward to watching Keith play this year, and I do believe the NBA is in his future.

The true luxury is having him as our PG. Gary Harris will be the off guard.
I like Travis Trice, but this team will not be as good if he's the starting point guard.

He cleaned up the charging problem last year, now he just needs to find that J that never missed in HS.
Even without the J he can be good, he needs to watch lots of Rondo film.
