Track icon dies

  • If you ran track/xc, particularly in Oakland County, you probably knew of Kermit Ambrose. He died last night at age of 101. I was with him and a group at NCAA indoor last spring. An icon. Funeral is Saturday at Lynch & Sons in Clawson

Man, I met him and ran in the Ambrose invitational in the early 80s. Surprised to hear he was still alive. (101 answers that). Local track legend.

Don't think -- it can only hurt the ballclub

UM, Green Bay and Chicago teams all have one thing in common: They all suck

  • He was a senior citizen when I was in high school. I first got to know him at EMU's Huron Relays as he would bark at kids to get where they belonged. Dealt with him as an athlete, then a coach and travelling partner (he was part of a group of Mich. track people ranging from 30s to, well, 100 as of last winter, that go to NCAA indoor finals every March). Incredible life he had. His Royal Oak apartment was a track & field museum. If you have run a race in OC in the last 40 years, your name is probably on a result sheet in that place.

Yup. I can remember running at his invitational in 2002 and he was giving it to us at the starters line for not getting set properly.

Great man. May he rest in peace...

  • He was my mom's gym teacher 50 years ago and I remember him from Oakland County track events from 20 years ago.

  • I was a thrower and not one from that area so I only knew the name but a lot of the guys on my team in college were really sad by his passing. His name is all over my facebook right now.

  • Talked to my mom and my uncle this morning who both had Ambrose as a teacher in high school. I thought he was a gym teacher when I posted earlier, he was not, but neither could remember what he taught. What they do remember though is how big of an ass he was and how nasty he was to students. He was definitely a track and field icon though.

Science. He taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Iowa in the late 20s, joined the Air Corps in WwII, was a meterologist in Italy and north Africa in the war then ended up teaching science at Seaholm. A few years ago, I was at the NCAA indoors with a group of 20 or so (we go every year) and a big razorback fan was standing in front of him so he yells out "Sit down, fatty!" I'm pretty sure this redneck could have probably taken all of us out. Luckily, after initially seeming pissed he had a good laugh when we explained the fact Kermit was in his late 90s and had been to every one of those championships ever held.
