  • They don't seem to have a clue as to how rare it is for some under the radar recruit like Burke turns into a POY level. Without this guy their offense is Northwestern with better athletes.

  • Said it before but scuM lucked out that Matta went for Shannon Scott out of Georgia rather than the kid down the street in Burke for his pg scholly.

The kid has carried the team on his back and he is the reason GR3 got all those wise open dunks to get himself noticed. 3 has no outside jumper- we dared him to shoot from outside.

We won't really know how these guys will perform without Burke, but I don't think scuM fans realize how much of the offense of the other guys is due to Burke penetrating.

Based on what? Seriously I'm no scout and im not objective but the only thing I see about him that is remotely reminiscent of the nba is his name. What am I missing? Am I just blinded by hate?

I have no clue how that kid has stayed in mocks. He kinda stinks.

Definitely has been over hyped... But we are talking about scUM, so that's a given

He was playing at a decent level until the 1st game they lost at Indy... He Basically was averaging around 12 pts and 6 boards while only having 4 games under 50% shooting through the 1st 21 games.... in the last 10 games, he is averaging around 8 pts and 4.5 boards while only shooting below 50% 7 times in that 10 game span...

Looks like the Frosh wall... F* scUM ... Go GREEN!

Yep....they absolutely hit the lottery with Burke - a 3 star kid who just turned out to be insanely talented and a POY level guy as a soph. They seem to think they can just bring in a random 4 star PG to replace him and they'll be fine. They are in for a very rude awakening when they are starting Spike, stauskus, Lavert, Morgan, and either Gump or Horford next year. They'll have that Walton kid to back up Spike, Horford, and the other 2 frosh forwards. oh, and Bielfeldt. lol

Can't wait for them to compare their line up with McFairy and Morgan to a line up with Nix and Payne. lol

Only because he's European. A white American wouldn't get drafted, unless they were a center.

and yet one NBA GM after another has drafted the likes of Joe Alexander, Adam Morrison, Jimmer Fredette, Gordon Hayward, Luke Babbitt and Tyler Hansbrough.. all since 2006. NBA GMs are the best. Comedic gold every draft.

Will be funny when Kentucky is preseason #1

A deep run in the tournament and Payne back for next year and MSU shouldn't start lower than third.

    This.

Barring folks from other teams (Indiana, Michigan) staying in college who really shouldn't stay in college, Kentucky will be preseason #1 next year.

Remember when UK was ranked in the top 5 to start the season this year? How did that turn out?

  • If Burke is the only one to go, I don't see a huge regression in their team next year. Let me be clear. I think Burke is a great player and will be difficult to replace. Great scorer, passer, low turnover/asst ratio.

Walton and Irvin are going to see a ton of playing time as freshman. We'd be boucing off the walls right now if those two were headed to MSU next year. Ironically, Irvin has drawn a lot of comparisons to Gary Harris. Same position, same school (Hamilton SE), similar national ranking, etc.

However, I feel that Walton is going to make or break the team. As someone mentioned earlier, UM players need help creating shots. Burke was a scoring threat which allowed him to draw defenders and open up teammates. How well can Walton handle the point?

I think it will be interesting to see how B_ handles playing time if GRIII and THJ return. Where will Irvin fit into the rotation.....I assume their starting 5 will be Walton, THJ, GRIII, McGary, Morgan? With Stauskas and Irvin coming off the bench?

  • The whole premise of this thread is wrong. When was Michigan basketball out of the abyss? Still not even a Sweet Sixteen appearance since 1994 coached by a guy who has never even been to the Final Four...

Burke's back must hurt. Without him that team is 10-8 in the B1G.

    If that.

They don't beat us or win @ Purdue without Burke. Probably don't beat OSU in AA, maybe even lose at home to PSU the first game.

Burke carrier this team especially the last five or six games. THJ is a pathetic loser who is utterly incapable of ever making a play when his team needs it.

Funny how they said "MSU football will return to a perennial 6-6 team.. they won't catch lightning in a bottle with guys like Worthy and Cousins every year" and yet they think their basketball program is now a legitimate Top 10 team perennially..

    well... we were 6-6.

Calling a player a loser is a bit harsh. I've always thought he was a player who's done the best he can with what he's got. Nothing happened yesterday to change that opinion.

I think a bigger issue was Beilein having everyone but the shooter back on defense when they were shooting FT's. Having not even just one potential rebounder made it just that much easier for IU to go down the court and score.

Burke is a talent. He is "The guy" on that team much like Appling has been "The guy" for MSU. When either plays poorly there is a good chance their team loses. Can't discount ESPN having major NBA contracts and a former umaa player for the boost in hype for Burke.

The um fans I know are convinced they will be better next year without Burke. Seriously. Their contention is that the rest of those guys will ALL get better, and they have guys who can step in and play PG. They are convinced GR3 is the real deal, McGary will be a beast, and Stauskus is a taller JJ Reddick. With TH becoming the leader, they just need a distributing PG who can play some D. They are saying Burke isn't a closer, and isn't a leader.

Can't make this shit up. There is no way they get better next year without him. No. Way.

But according to their fans, Walton is coming in as a freshman and will be BETTER than Burke (no joke, heard this from one of them). They really do not realize how good Burke is and how rare it is to have a freshman point do so well, let alone pick up where Burke left off.

Its the same thing with football where all of their idiot fans think incoming freshman are going to play right away and make a huge difference.....its rare, the step from HS to college is a BIG one.

I agree with you. I think they'll be worse without Burke. I just don't see them falling off a cliff.

My only argument would be that Freshmen consistently make an impact in bball. You cannot compare it to football. Look at Harris and Valentine for us. GRIII, Stauskas and McGary for them. It's not far fetched to rely on 1 or 2 starting Freshmen in college bball.

That being said, the one position I wouldn't want a true FR starting is at the point. It is rare that an 18 yr old can walk into a harsh environment like the B1G and keep his composure.

  • Burke is a helluva player, but his weakness is he can't go left and drive. I was watching him the whole game and even when he had the favorable match up to drive after a defender switch, he could not stay left and go up left. He either pulls up for the outside J, crosses over to the right side in the lane, or looks for the baseline kickout to the corner.

look at the replay of the final play - He had Zeller matched up above the three. had a step on Zeller above the FT line. all he had to do was finish strong with his left and couldn't. Instead, he tries to cross over hop to the right side too late and threw up a prayer. Some would argue that he was trying to draw contact; nope not going to fly. He had his man beat and there was absolutely no need; you go strong and not hope for a generous whistle.

just some screencaps to illustrate the point. he had separation and was a step ahead. If he plants with his right and goes up with his left - game over. instead plants left, starts up with his right, switches hands, then throws up some junk with his left. Pay attention UM-opposing coaches.

It'll be interesting. Burke is the only significant loss from this year's team (Huge loss, I realize). I'm assuming Hardaway is back next year.

They add in Zak Irvin, the #9 shooting guard recruit in the country and the #34 overall player in the class of 2013. They also add Derrick Walton from Detroit, the #10 point guard and #47 overall recruit.

The team won't be a disaster next year, but they'll need some guys to take a step from this year to next.

Some thought they would fall off the earth after Morris left. BLine is putting in a foundation. Is it finished? No.

    This..

They lept to potential contender status this year because of Burke.. DIdn't find enough consistent producers to make it happen.. Without Burke, I imagine they'll fall to Wisc status.. In the conversation, but clearly not in the elite bracket for the Big 10 or to realistically go anywhere beyond a Sweet 16.. This was their year for the immediate future.
