Trolling for Walverines on the DetNews site

  • This is so obviously begging for page views from wal_verines fans that it's laughable. And please lay off Eric Lacy, he writes the stories, not the headlines.

First example: if you saw this headline ("Worthy stumbles at NFL Combine"), what would you think? HAHAHAHAHAHA, ANOTHER SPARTY NOOOOOOOOO!!!! Well, here's what the story says: "Worthy, according to ESPN.com, lost his footing and fell to the ground just seconds into an agility drill at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

" 'To his credit, he quickly bounced up and finished the drill,' wrote ESPN blogger Steve Muench. 'More importantly, he showed quick feet and above-average lateral burst before and after the mishap.' ...

"Despite the mistake, Muench claims Worthy 'has risen into the first-round mix' in recent weeks.

"The NFL website gave Worthy's overall combine grade a 79.5. He wasn't a top performer for his position in five categories listed on the site: 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, three-cone drill or 20-yard shuttle run.

"Michigan's Mike Martin led all defensive tackles at the combine in the bench press (36 reps of 225 pounds), but finished with a grade of 59.7."

huh But Worthy stumbled, eh? Not "Despite stumble, Worthy shines"? Or "Despite stumble, Worthy grades higher than Martin"? Not if you want wal_verines clicking on the link, the first one below.

More egregious is the second headline: "Michigan State's Trenton Robinson falls shy of goal at NFL combine." Damn, I thought. I thought he had done well.

Ah, but read the story: "Trenton Robinson's bold prediction for Tuesday's NFL combine nearly came true.

"The Michigan State safety fell two-hundredths of a second short of producing the fastest 40-yard time among safeties at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

"Robinson ran in at 4.52 seconds, according to NFL.com, tying Vanderbilt's Sean Richardson for the second-fastest time.

"The result came two days after Robinson told msuspartans.com he planned on being the fastest player at his position during the Combine.

"South Carolina State's Christian Thompson led all safeties with a 4.50."

This is just ridiculous. Not only was he in the top 3 safeties at the Combine, he was 2 hundredths of a second off his goal. (And if he had reached his goal, he would have been the fastest safety at the Combine.)

I don't doubt that there are wal_verines out there who are looking for any support to claim that coachd is a fraud, the team is overrated, and that none of the spartan2 players are going to be anything once they get out into the big, bad world anyway. I just wonder if the DetNews realizes that at some point it's a zero-sum game trying to pull Wolvie clicks onto spartan2 links with such obvious misstatements in the headlines: for every Wolvie who clicks on a link to rejoice in a SPARTY, NOOOO!!! moment (that didn't actually happen), at least one spartan2 is driven away, and maybe more.

Why not just go with the actual truth of the story, instead of twisting the headline into something barely recognizable, thus disappointing wal_verines, driving away spartan2, and reducing your credibility with readers of every stripe?

    Nope, must be too hard.

All right, I'll confess my confusion over your post.

    (1) This is from the Detroit News, not the Free Press.

    (2) The issue I have is not with any comment to either article linked, but with headlines inaccurately conveying the nature of the article.

So your criticism is...is what, exactly? confused

  • UM fanboy is pathetic.

They actually create Facebook accounts to troll the lowest hanging fruit in society (comment sections make sports talk radio and this place look like legitimate media venues). I have noticed far less comments since they switched to Facebook, however. Looks like most of the UM faithful don't want to be known and operate better behind screen names.

    Worst. Fan base. Ever.

Oh, Lacy is a human..."leave Eric Lacy alone", lol!

  • By the way, with Molk's whining and this crap about Martin (they were two hugely overrated players, neither of which deserved the accolades afforded to them) you get a real sense of the level of the delusional mindset um fanboy has. Starting with cheerleader they have at AD, to the cronies they have in the Detroit media, UM is more smoke than fire. Whether it be February recruit victories or September Heisman's....they can market.

October 20this going to be a bloodbath. #beatdown

  • OP: You have the makings of a serious, well-stated (not for publication) letter to the sports and executive editors. Include your rewritten headlines, which make much more sense than what actually appears. Leave out the walverines part. Maybe they don't care, but it's still worth a shot. These people need to know how bad it is.

b b b but that's unpossible! Everyone knows that Hoax and UM are going to the BCS championship game this year. They have a veteran starting quarterback who is the leading candidate for the September Heisman. Any holes (there aren't any because they're Michigan but they don't want to come off as sounding arrogant) will easily be filled by members of their 2012 recruiting class who will play like All-Pro NFL veterans. Their only true test in 2012 is the opener against Alabama, all other games are mere speed bumps on the way to the national championship.

Rumor has it that the national championship trophy is going to be discontinued as it will from here on out be won by UM.

  • Good catches. Pretty transparent BS taking place. I'd hardly call this nitpicking...these are purposefully deceptive headlines. The first story is also written very negatively toward Worthy, despite the actual meat of the story being him rising above the initial mistake and still impressing people.
