True Spartans

  • Hearing the news about Delvon was like a punch in the gut. He is one of those rare kids who does all Spartans proud regardless of his stat sheet. I actually felt a loss with today's news because of the finality of it all... that Delvon wouldn't have that last year to shine.

He and Aurthur Ray are 2 people who you simply want to see succeed. They embody a certain toughness and grit that you have imminent respect for regardless of your age, or even what they and their team may have accomplished on the field or court.

We have been very fortunate over the years to have so many athletes, and many unsung, that did their uniform proud.

Who did you root for purely on their guts, determination and how they conducted themselves? Those people that you label a "True Spartan" regardless of what they may have attained.

Mateen, Plaxico, Kirk Gibson the list just goes on and on.

  • I will always appreciate Greg Jones and TJ Duckett for coming back for their senior seasons when they could have left for the NFL.

  • I am going to give one up for Isaiah Dahlman. Stuck with the program. Loved watching his senior night.

    Plaxico? Really?

  • Timbo was always my favorite Bball player along with Chris Hill.

Then Travis Walton came along and he probably dethroned both those guys a little bit.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing Delvon stay involved with the program despite the knee issues.

  • I have followed Michigan State for so long that there is so many that I could name...but for starters...how about Drew Stanton?

  • Jesse Johnson from last years team. Maybe didn't have the same skill set as some of the other guys mentioned, but he absolutely loved this school, and it showed.

    10%?

    The Doctor

  • Draymond, in a lot of ways, is the last man standing now from the group that was to be himself, Delvon, and Korie. He's also the last major link to the two Final Four runs and B1G titles.

He's not perfect by any means but he truly loves being a Spartan. A True Spartan in my opinion.

I'm also going to say Durrell Summers. He was a head case at times, but he always worked hard. He decided to stay when he could have bolted early to play in the NBA. He deserves credit for that.

Durrell is a Spartan in exile right now. I haven't even heard anything about where he's trying to play ball. Gone off the grid.

It will take a few years, but people will remember all the great moments instead of just last year's disappointment.

    Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.

Aaron Roberts and Bobby Popp. Interesting.

Aaron Roberts came in as a HS All-American, all of the billing of what would now be considered a 4-5* running back. I was 14 rows up when he took his first carry from scrimmage. You could almost hear his teeth hitting the carpet when he hit the line of scrimmage. He was seemingly never heard from again. Until his Senior year, at michigan, where he helped to carry the team to an upset of the vaunted walverines. The dude never gave up. Never gave up. And was around to help us when we needed him.

Bobby Popp, the man who stood on the sidelines, hoping, praying for his chance to get on the field. . . . Coach hollers over to him "POPP, get over here" He thinks his time has come. . . . "give 'em your helmet". One of the funniest stories in Spartan lore (when told correctly)

Bobby Popp is still battling for guys like Blanche Martin, the late George Webster, and many others, trying to help former Spartans in need. Good dude.

  • I have one. I hope my memory serves. Bob Apisa. Samoan and a 66 NC alum. He was living (and may still live) in Hawaii in 2004, the year of an absolute travesty of a game against Hawaii. I heard an interview with him, and he was pissed about that game.. REALLY pissed. He caught flack from the home state, but his pride in the Green was paramount.
