It was right after the scandal.

Well in looking at the schedule with that knowledge, I don't think you can clearly state that Nebraska was better.

PSU had one loss going into the Nebraska game, and that was to Alabama.

Then arguably the largest scandal in NCAA football history happens and in the next game they lose to Nebraska 17-14, lose 3 of their last 4 with the one win being at Ohio State, and finish with the same record as Nebraska.

In retrospect Debord could not have been any worse then DickRod.

But it would have been harder to get rid of Debord

Penn ST was barley winning football games though. They beat Indiana like 10-6 and Illinois 13-10 and I think Iowa at home 10-3. They were barley getting bye as is before the scandal hit... they just happened to face the two toughest teams on their Big Ten schedule at the end of the season being Nebraska and Wisconsin.

Well if you are going to frame it as barely getting by, Nebraska barely got by a team that was barely getting by that just had an atomic bomb dropped on them.

I just don't see a strong case for Nebraska being the better team. Some facts support PSU, some support Nebraska.

I think them beating PSU at their place regardless of circumstances is the trump card. The overall records were identical so I have to go by head to head despite the circumstances surrounding that game.

You have to look at the whole season, the circumstances, and head to head if you are going to get an accurate picture.

Otherwise MSU was clearly better than UM in 2001 and in 2004 they were equal with perhaps an edge to MSU with Stanton and homefield.

Looking at Nebraska's results last year, they were like an old-school MSU team, they were often really on or really off. lol
