Syllabus:

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND GOALS

In this course, we will take a historical approach to our study of the game of basketball and the stories about it that we create and consume. The goals of the course are 1) to expand our knowledge of the history and variety of the game’s manifestations; 2) to enhance our awareness of the nature and types of stories that spring up around the game; and 3) to strengthen our ability to recognize and shape the stories we tell about the game as well as the uses to which we put those stories in daily life.

COURSE ORGANIZATION AND REQUIREMENTS

After our first week’s two introductory meetings, the course will be organized into 6 units of 4 classes each. Each unit corresponds to a different period in the history of the game. They are arranged chronologically.

For each unit, you will have five different (short) assignments (a full explanation is given in the appendix corresponding to each):

1) Required reading assignment (Appendix 1)
2) Elective supplementary reading summary assignment (see Appendix 2)
3) Elective in-depth reading response assignment (Appendix 3)
4) Elective moving image review assignment (Appendix 4)
5) Blog (Appendix 5)

COURSE EVALUATION

Your final grade will be given on the following basis:

1) Completion of required reading, attendance and in-class participation = 20 %
2) Supplementary reading summary assignments = 15 %
3) In-Depth Reading response assignment = 30 %
4) Film review assignment = 15
5) Blog assignment = 20 %
