  • Guarantee the sec coaches completely overrated um. When bama violates them it looks that much better for bama and the sec.

This is what cracks me up...coaches voting is the biggest conflict of interest there is.

  • 13 is OK, but if we were ND or Michigan we'd be top 7 with what we have coming back.

    Johnny2x2x

  • Maybe after we beat Boise by 21, Maxwell throws for 300+, Bell runs for 150 and Gholston rips someone's head off, the pollsters will believe in us. Until then 13th is fine - don't want our players to get too cocky early.

  • I'm glad we finally have a decent rating to start with. If we have an amazing season, starting with a high ranking is useful. We saw a few years ago that starting unranked hurts you, even if you win 11 games. Other than that...don't really care.

  • I'm comfy with 13. Gives the team something to strive for - earn their way into the Top 10.

Yep. They'll be able to throw that little card out there when people are bitching about non-conference scheduling at the end of the year when there's a mess for who is #2.

I fully expect that after Michigan loses to Bama and MSU beats Boise, that Michigan will still be ranked higher than MSU.

Depends on what kinds of games they are, but certainly the poll is a starting line and it's true that losers don't fall fast unless they get pounded.

Poor Scott, I can only imagine how fast his call board lit up with fat, members only jacket wearing, ford escort drivers looking to tell him a thing or two about Michigan football

Even if it's a 28 point ass whooping in both games, Michigan will somehow walk out being ranked 1 spot a head of MSU.

UM ranks 2nd on the most overrated program (for the last 20 years):

    1. Florida State
    2. Michigan
    3. Tennessee
    4. USC
    5. Clemson
    6. Notre Dame
    7. Oklahoma
    8. Miami
    9. Nebraska
    10. Texas

    (I think that's a little low)

While on a year to year basis you are probably right (not sure where that list comes from), I believe that everyone on that list besides Clemson and ND have won MNC's in the past 20 years (or at least 1/2's haha scUM).

  • I'm ok with this..

It shows some respect for the pollsters.. It also gives the guys something to work for.. + it's a high enough start that an undefeated season gets us into the national championship game.. + a 1 or even 2 loss season gets us into the BCS conversation..

If they think Georgia is #6, MSU should get more credit then especially for beating them in SEC country.

They got that ranking purely based on schedule. For the 2nd straight year, they miss Arkansas, Alabama, & LSU from the West. SEC loves those turds.

  • By Halloween, if we are undefeated, we'll be top 5.

Our schedule is set up in such a way that we control our destiny. Lots of games against ranked opponents, and don't kid yourself thinking we won't get a boost by beating "unranked" OSU. That's a major game.

Since divisional winners are determined by overall conference record, we could still win the division with a loss in AA (although let's not test that....), but the home games against Iowa, Ohio State, and Nebraska are 100% must-wins.

I see UM losing 2 or maybe 3 conference games (OSU (in Columbus), MSU, and either Nebraska (in Lincoln) or even Iowa in AA (trap game before they travel to Columbus).

    Tupes

  • So the SEC and ESPN got what they wanted.

Now they can hype the um/Bama game as a game between top 10 teams. When bama beats them, they can talk about how much superior the SEC is, adn that the B1G just can't compete quite yet, but with the recruiting classes that Meyer and Hoke are bringing in they aren't too far away.

I should just go write for ESPN.

This has to be one of our higher preseason rankings though, maybe 2000 we had a good one, I'm not sure. I think it puts the team in a good position to prove it on the field, and they aren't so far out of the rankings that they will be discounted later in the season. Just win, and everything else will take care of itself.

I ran into a guy I work with who is a Badger fan, told him they were ranked 12, I said for them that is the equivalent of a top 5 ranking since they don't play anyone pre conference. We both laughed.

The new south end zone scoreboard will give MSU the fifth-largest video board in the nation and the LED portion alone is 5,359 square feet. The north end will feature two 1,600 square-foot video boards that are green and silver and will be adorned with large three-dimensional Spartan logos and backlit so that they'll subtly glow at night. The north rim of Spartan Stadium also features a fascia ring with another 4,510 square feet of video space. "They are impressive," Dantonio said. "It really changes the dynamic of Spartan Stadium. Now we've got to put some good plays up on the scoreboard and video screen."

Can't wait to watch SCUM drop from #8 in the pre-season to out of the poll by the end of Sept when they are 2-2. Heck, depending on how bad Alabama shells them they could be out of it after week one.

Teams that stand out as slightly overrated: No. 6 Georgia, No. 8 Michigan, No. 11 WVU, Florida and Notre Dame for being ranked.

I agree with two of the three. I think Georgia is going to be VERY good this year. Michigan and West Virgina well they won't be bad but top ten/eleven I don't see that at least for preseason. They are getting alot of credit for playing the worst BCS game in the history of the BCS right now.

Highest since 91. Not sure what we were that year. 2002 we were 15.

I can guarantee you that this season will be nothing like those though.
