USA beats Italy in soccer

Your average UofM fan and I have something in common, neither of us went to UofM. Though we do share One major difference, I got Accepted.

I'm not saying its like winning a game in the world cup or some tournament, but I think its definitely more important than playing themselves in practice which is what you think it is.

    This is fact.

To answer the original question: Yes, it is a big deal. However it is not an enormously big, Douglass knocked out Tyson or USA beat the Soviets deal.

It is a big deal and should be celebrated, and should get more coverage than it actually will receive from ESPN. Unfortunately that is just how our crappy media works.

This even is probably getting huge coverage in Italy right now, and the majority of the country knows about it.

  • It don't mean jack...didn't they draw with the greasers down a man in a recent World Cup match? If I remember correctly that was the only point they got in the entire tournament...now if they can do the same against a powerhouse like the Dutch or Brazil, then it will be a big deal

The first two words of this post are the only ones that apply to soccer in the US.

Thank you for your contributions to this thread. You have been extremely insightful and it is a joy to read your posts.

It's not a big deal and I don't think you'll find a more ardent USMNT supporter on this board. It's a friendly...an exhibition....a chance for the team to work on their game as they turn their attention to more important matters, namely World Cup qualifying which begins this June. Italian football supporters will note the upset, as they should, and the US soccer supporters should note and celebrate the progress the team seems to be making. Note we played today without Donovan, Chandler, Jones, and Torres, on the road in Europe, against a solid Italian squad. It's always nice to get a result in any game, but it's just a friendly. Be happy for the signs of progress, take the positive media attention, but in the end, it's just a friendly. If this helps us on the path to Brazil 2014...fantastic.......

Nice derogatory term. I'm not Italian but you help reinforce the unfortuante stereotype of the 'American Idiot', There are about 6 or 7 other countries you should have named before Brazil as being a true measuring stick. What does a game 6 years ago have to do with the relevance today?

Yeah it was the most boring WC final in the history of the tourney..well except for when Zidan used his head as a battering ram on that one dude's chest, that was hilarious

really that's derogatory? I was gonna use the word wop but figured that would be too derogatory. Anyways just pointing out that Uncle Sam has pretty much owned the Azzuri of late so I don't really consider it a good barometer of where the team stands right now

Who was that against? Algeria? Then we lost to Ghana, who really only had one good player in Gyan... real landmark moment for US Soccer. Ended with a giant thud. This country enjoys an underdog. I get that... and US soccer globally is just that during the World Cup against countries who are better and care light years more about the game, so naturally people hop on the bandwagon for the World Cup. It's probably more exciting for people to root for that then watch the Dream Team stomp teams by 30 and 40 points in the Summer Olympics. Why do you think people got excited about the US Hockey team's run in Vancouver? Because the US wasn't supposed to do very well.

The problem is those bandwagon fans go away after the World Cup. They watch football and baseball and they don't care about who is in the race for the Supporter's Shield or how big the rivalry is between the Sounders and the Timbers. Until the MLS can latch on to those bandwagon fans and keep them in the sport, soccer won't be anything here.

Judging by your thought process in the last few posts, I'm going out on a limb in guessing that you are not old enough to remember any pre-1998 World Cups.

You'd be right if this were 1990. The country has embraced the game, our players are finding success in Europe's top flight, MLS attendance figures are rising and the product on the field is improving.

I'm not huge into soccer and didn't watch the game today, but that Donovan goal and the celebratory aftermath was absolutely awesome. Definitely something I'll never forget.

uhoh We lost to them 3-1 in 2009, and we didn't even score on them in the WC draw. They scored an own goal. We also lost in 2002.

Please explain to me how that is "owning the Azzuri".

Sports fans tend to have a love/hate relationship with soccer like no other sport. I consider myself swiss on the subject, I loved to play growing up, but only really watch the World Cup, and the occasional USA match. But as annoying as soccer haters are, the soccer lovers are much worse. Fringe sport in this country, no more, no less. If everyone could accept that, we'd all be better off. 1994, 1999, Growth, MLS, blah blah blah. Soccer is taking over as fast as the metric system, it just won't ever be on par with football, basketball, or baseball in America.

The US was missing several starters as well....Landon Donovan, Jose Torres, Jermaine Jones, and Timmy Chandler. The squads today were comparable representations of the respective federations........

I was actually at that game and we were frigging robbed. We actually had the game in hand, playing well in the 2nd half with Italy down a man and then the ref quickly red carded, not one, but 2 of ours allowing Italy to survive and get a point. It was an absolute travesty. BTW, Italy won the world cup that year and easily qualified for Euro 2012. This is a pretty damn good Italy team.
