  • France was totally outclassed by the US. There's a huge talent discrepancy. Huet and the greater familiarity with each other (the French team has been together for a few weeks since the international season ended practicing and playing exhibition games while the US team has been together for about a week and played just one exhibition game) kept France in the game for a while and a power play goal gave the French some brief hope in the latter stages of the second period, but ultimately the much more talented team won out.

A big test will be tomorrow against Canada, unfortunately due to the 100s of hours of pre-Kentucky Derby programming across the NBC networks, it's not going to be shown live. I believe it will be shown tape-delayed at 10:00pm or 10:30pm on NBCSN.

Sweden, Finland, and Russia are the class of this tournament, though. The US and Canada are down too much talent due to the ongoing NHL playoffs.

France is known for wine and being rude to foreigners. They think that The World evolves around France. I have been there many times. Beating France in hockey is nothing to be proud about. Now, beating Sweden or Russia is another matter...

Spoiler alert: USA beat Canada 5-4 in overtime today. Like PR said, it'll be on NBCSN later tonight.

Edit: if you don't want to wait, you can find extended highlights on tsn.ca

I always find it funny when Americans criticize the French for arrogance.

It's like Notre Dame and Michigan fan bases calling the other out for being arrogant.

I'm pretty sure that the French know that hockey revolves around Montreal, and not Paris. Their last NHLer was Huet?

It's the best hockey in the world when each nations elite are rostered. It started with the Canada Cup/World Cup of Hockey then the Olympics opened the doors in 98 and it's been a phenomenal production each time. They haven't played the WCoH since 04. Damn shame.

Amen man. The '96 World Cup was some of the greatest hockey I've ever watched. That USA/Canada series was epic, hell the entire tournament was. And of course the only time I cussed out Yzerman.

If I'm recalling correctly, Yzerman was offside on the game winner in game 1 of the finals.

  • Pretty much going as most expected so far at the World Championships. Group H has Canada, Finland, and the US pulling away in the group and Group S has Sweden, Russia, and the Czechs pulling ahead.

The US-Finland game on Sunday should be interesting and it would be nice to see the US beat another quality opponent. 9:15 AM tomorrow, live on NBC Sports (much better than the Canada game which was tape delayed).

Canada is a big favorite at this point to win Group H, but it would be nice if the US could jump Finland for the 2nd spot in the group and avoid playing Sweden in the quarterfinals. After Russia's big victory over Sweden last night, they're the odds on favorite to win Group S. Still going to be tough going. Unless Canada falters, the US is staring Sweden or the Czechs right in the face for the quarterfinals.

  • Great game for the U.S. this morning! 5-0 against Finland now, completely taking it to the Fins in Finland (2 minutes left in the game as I send this). They've completely frustrated the Finnish team and set themselves up well for the quarterfinals.

And if the good Lord’s willin’, I’m a keep on chillin’, refillin’ and flyin’ high

  • Oh, and to make up for my earlier post, I think I had the quarterfinal match-ups wrong. It sounds like they don't go cross group in the quarterfinals, so it likely means the U.S. will probably face Finland in the quarterfinals as well, unless there is a major upset somewhere along the way.

  • That was an awesome game this morning, very impressive. I've really come to like Mike Keenan as this tournament has gone along.
