UofM giving away free classes now

  • Apparently they suck so bad that no one will pay anymore lol

    Actually a pretty cool idea.

  • This is completely off topic. But as a self proclaim uniform and logo fanatic... Michigan's logo looks like trash compared to the Ivy League schools. I am not the biggest fan of Stanford's but it is light years a head of Michigan's. The M blends into the white background and the University Of is way too small. Even the Michigan is hard to read.

  • Cool, but not an original idea. MIT has had their version of CourseWare for nearly a decade.

  • Seems like an interesting idea. I think I'll sign up for a class and see how it goes.

He wanted non accredited schools to offer degrees that would be acceptable in the work force. This Coursea is no different than iTunes U. While there may be some quizzes attached, you do not earn anything other then general knowledge.

  • As I was listening to this story on NPR this morning, the woman said "Four elite universities are participating, Princeton, Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of..." and I thought to myself, she's going to say Michigan, isn't she? And she did. Those fucks.

Anyway, cool idea. Anything that makes quality education more widely available is a good thing.

Overall, it is one of the elite academic institutions in the country, whether you want to admit it or not.

Separate the hate for their athletic department from academia.

This is a great move by all involved. I like that MIT, these universities, and people like Salman Khan (Khan Academy) are pushing this education revolution.

An educated populace is a far better populace...well, unless you're a dictator.

The real reason why they're doing this to pad their numbers so that they don't feel so guilty about lying to people when they say they have the most living alumni members in the nation.

  • If anyone's interested in the subject, I'd suggest Internet History, Technology, and Security by Dr. Chuck Severance. He has been a fantastic lecturer over the last two semesters; his format is very good at introducing new subjects such as programming to students that have little to no experience. Also he's a Spartan grad, used to be a MSU professor back in the 90s, and has brought in a MSU Professor to guest lecture on multiple occassions.

The certificate of completion may not be from the institution or may not be issued at all.

But for CPE requirements it does not matter.

It better have in-depth analysis of the impact of tRCMB on the Internet.

The RCMB...is one of the most awful, alarming, inappropriate, disgusting, and offensive msg boards in the history of the internet.

You're right. And you could definitely do so, although I don't know how much it will help.

I don't know how long you have lurked or posted here, but spartanFan801 wanted this type of education to completely replace the current accredited academic system we have. I am not buying it. These fantastic institutions, public and private are not going to survive by simply handing out online degrees for free. It is far more complicated than uploading 2 hours of online lectures for 7-10 weeks. While you can use this to pad your resume, it is not going to replace a Bachelor's degree the way spartanFan argued it would.

On one Michigan board there is a thread where someone proudly proclaims "They cannot call me a Walmart Wolverine anymore!!!"

I thought it was pretty hilarious. I'd love to hear a conversation with some Walvie in the future, "I passed a 7 week online sociology course, proud U-M grad!"

There are "message boards" for the classes for discussion...Could present some very interesting trolling opportunities.

  • I'm taking an intro Computer Science class that started today. I really like the structure of the lectures, professor on web cam, working examples, seamless toggling between video lecture and class notes.

Only about 1 - 1.5 hours of work between lectures and exercises this week, but it seems work load will differ between courses.

    Pretty cool so far.
