Urban Meyer on B1G recruiting

  • TPain151807 said...

    No you didn't

Really TPain.......... Jacobs flipped to Maryland, we lost our punter to Florida, EZEKIEL was being recruited by Mizzou, and Trey Johnson was being recruited by Ten. So there you go, deal with it, we do! We don't whine about recruits getting flipped! You got 1 recruit flipped by us last year and your still not over it!

not trying to be a smart ass as I respect Michigan State and Dantonio. That being said, the Big Ten, as a whole, needs to step it up. They need to start paying coaches what they pay the SEC coaches. They need to invest in their football programs, etc. The Big Ten schools are too passive and don't SELL what they have to offer well enough. IMO

There is no reason players shouldn't go to a school like Michigan State over Ole' Miss. Come on. I don't think Urban is trying to be a prick. I think he would just like to see the Big Ten return to prominence. What is wrong with that? He's one of the best recruiters in the country. If I'm a big ten coach and he wants to give my program some pointers, I'm not kicking him out the door.

    Bucknut Fan -

Good post until the last sentence. For what it is worth, here is my .02c.

    1) Agree that the BIG needs to open the pockets to keep top coaching talent - With all of the job openings how can Kirby Smart still be at Bama? The Tide bucked up to keep big-time talent

    2) Agree that the BIG needs to adopt a more aggressive recruiting strategy to level the playing field.

    3) Ole Miss had a hell of a recruiting class. Every year a few under the radar teams have a top recruiting class.

    4) Coach Urban Meyer's comments as presented come across as patronizing and condescending - I am so glad Coach Urban Meyer's 2012 team finished undefeated. In my opinion, tOSU's 2012 team were great finishers and winners but the most vulnerable top 10 team in the league.

Well deserved expectations are in place for tOSU to be the dynasty team of the decade, anything less is unacceptable.

    5) Coach Urban Meyer has earned the title as one of the best recruiters in the country - I think Coach Urban Meyer's SEC swagger will make the BIG a better conference.

I am not sure how much staying power Coach Urban Meyer has. He has placed himself on quite a pedestal with his comments.

MSU, Iowa and Wisconsin are sucking off the tits of tOSU and scUM and it needs to stop for the good of the B1G. If it doesn't, don't be surprised to see tOSU and scUM leave for another conference together. Staying competitive and relevant on a national level will require it.

Okay, I'm just going to lay it out here. The reason MSU and other B1G schools are low in recruiting are these:

    1) no compelling reason to go there 2) little or lack of tradition 3) a not-so-big name head coach 4) little or lack of winning tradition 5) cold weather climate (even OSU has to overcome this) 6) athletic department and money: The BiG doesn't spend to keep up with the big schools (not the school's fault, just a matter of economics) just for fun, look up ... wait "LMGTFY": http://bit.ly/14WqDZ1 click on that and see what I mean. Ohio State, for example, spends about $40 Million per year more than MSU with zero subsidies, meaning no funding from the state, etc. That is "per year". I am not gloating, I am simply pointing out that that kind of money builds better facilities and hires big name coaches. Oh yes, you probably thinnk that extra $40 million is paid to the players, I'm sure. Get over it. Not everyone cheats. Neither does Meyer. 7) at the end of the day, winning breeds success on the field and off (recruiting). This year WAS MSU's year to take the B1G and you blew it. You let Wisky have it and I hate those fuckers. I at least LIKE MSU!! And Dantonio!! Don't blame the refs. You blew it.

You think you're super cool and clever using the LMGTFY TWICE now in your posts, huh?

Who isnt? It isnt illegal, he likes the kids talent, is he not alllowed to recruit him because of some BS gentlenans agreement? We had other schools try to flip 4.of our guys before NSD, it doesnt just happen to MSU.

B49, just stop. Your initial post rationalized that poor ole' Meyer was FORCED into flipping recruits because he had no other choice but to do so.

Admit it and move on. Meyer is a poacher. Denying it is just stupid. But you are right, it isn't illegal. It's just sleazy when there hasn't been a coaching change. Thanks to Meyer, he has set the sleaze precedent in the B1G and, I agree, MSU is going to have to roll up their sleeves and dig in deep in order to compete with the likes of OSU.

    Unfortunately.

Um, no, I'm calling you a favored program by Delaney. I don't think that's exactly controversial. And was that not a pick 6? Was Braxton really injured after the play? Do you enjoy wins given to you by the refs?

let's assume you are correct that it was a pick6. Just 2 questions remain?

    1) you can accurately predict that OSU wouldn't have scored at all after that.
    2) so... you should have ended up 12-1 instead of 7-6???????????????????

  • Okay, I read 4 pages of this and had some laughs. (Thanks for that.) However, now I want to give you my two cents.

    1) Meyer doesn't give a damn about the B1G or any other school within the B1G (nor should he or anyone else)...other than the fact they are (or soon will be) anchors around OSU's neck (in terms of CFB). Make no mistake, he won't be happy until the conf. officially changes it's name to "OSU & Little 11."

    2) Stop whining about "poaching" and feigning ethics. You don't own recruits/commits and if you can't keep them convinced your school is best for them, that's on you. OSU always has a top class. Fight fire with fire...if you think you can somehow make that work for you.

    3) Stop whining about not enough talent in the North or only Ohio having it and get your freaking staff in a damn plane to recruit Tx, Fla, Ga, etc.
In OSU's '13 class we had:
    - 3 kids from Tx,
    - 2 kids from Fla,
    - 2 kids from Ga,
    - 1 kid from SC
    - 1 kid from NC
    - 1 kid from CA
    - 1 kid from NJ
    - 1 kid from MO
    - 1 kid from IN
    - 11 kids from OH.
So well over half our class came from OOS, including a bunch from SEC territory and other southern climes.

    That is all.

Please resume your regularly-scheduled Meyer and OSU bashing. Hopefully it will keep you warm during the storm hitting out region the next day or so.

  • Urban is not looking to give B1G coaches pointers on recruiting at an individual level. The main point of having a group discussion among coaches is how the B1G conference can raise the profile of all of the teams. Competition breeds excellence. From his experience of coaching and recruiting in the SEC, he knows what a recruiting advantage it is to have so many night games. It will take the collection of coaches to change this tradition, not just one or two schools. There are logical reasons why the B1G only have day games in the month of November and it was because of cold weather. The flip side is the south (SEC) has a lot of night games, because of the heat at noon which is less safe for players and fans. One big challenge of having so many noon games, is that recruits and fans do not have enough time before the game to experience the buildup of the gameday atmosphere, which creates a lot of anticipation and excitement. I personally think there is something really special about the night games in the B1G. I have been to a lot of B1G games over the past decade and noon games are okay, 3:30 games are usually pretty good, and night games are rocking. I have always wanted to go to Madison for a night game just for the atmosphere.

I can understand any fan/coach being frustrated when they lose a recruit that they thought they had locked up. However, most of these young men love the attention, and if they were serious about their commitment, they would quite taking calls from other schools once they made their pledge. I'm sure it is hard for them to turn away all of the flattering, ego-stroking recruiters and free trips to see parts of the country that they may never had the opportunity to visit.....and at the end of the day, until they sign..... these young men don't owe any university allegiance and they should use up all the opportunities, as they will be making one of the most important decisions of their lives. I personally would like all of the B1G schools do well, except for U of M, and that is only because they are evil toot
