Urban Meyer on B1G recruiting

  • Who ever knew that it was so simple all along?

What will be his excuse when he loses to "inferior" talent?

Well he has to lose to that inferior first which I don't think he is going to be doing much of.

Personally, I don't see a problem with is comments. I think it's true that the B1G needs to recruit better as the college football landscape is changing.

Look at teams like Ole Miss, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and others that are recruiting at a top 25 level. If they can do it I don't see why MSU, PSU, and Wisconsin can't.

We can't have it both ways. Do you want the B1G to maintain certain academic and "ethical" standards or have a great academic reputation and be a run of the mill football conference? I don't necessarily like how Meyer recruits but the results are obvious. OSU runs an SEC style program in this regard and they were undefeated last year and will be the class of the conference once again whether you like his style or not.

This probably won't be popular here, but: Academics first, last, always. I don't want B1G schools becoming SEC clones just for the sake of football.

  • So, how does a school "recruit better?"

I don't really understand how being good at football takes away from academics.

As it stands right now, I bet half of the athletes at both M and MSU wouldn't get in if they weren't athletes. Honestly, its probably more than half.

  • Ole Miss is going to be the most talented six win team in America.

Are we crowning Vandy and Kentucky now?

I just said their recruiting better than they have in the past.

If you think recruiting doesn't matter then ya this thread probably is worthless.

There is way more talent down south than there is up here

Yea, On Bama's title team from a few years ago, Ingram was the only player on the roster from a state north of Kentucky.

Great. They're recruiting better. Would that make Urban happy if he were still at Florida?

Well the SEC already goes by his philosophy so I doubt it.

I don't understand why this is so bad, the B1G's formula right now is not working. Why not change it up and start really going all out in recruiting.

    MBlueFan

  • 1. Recruits are better in the south (weather). They are closer to SEC country, hence they liked SEC schools growing up
    2. SEC would let in a 5 year old who couldn't read if it meant a 5 star QB
    3. Weather -- kids from the north will go south for weather, kids from the south rarely go north because they don't like the weather
    4. budgets -- No one in the big ten has a budget like Tennessee gives their football team to recruit (oh yeah, how did that work out for Tenn. lol )
    5. I would kick Urban in the balls if I ever saw him around

  • So Urban is pretty much looking at recruiting rankings and following that to determine who has the best classes. Like a fucking idiot fanboy. Gee, I think Dantonio would argue he has recruited way more talent than Kentucky or Vanderbilt, 4 stars or no.

No wonder this turd fell flat on his face with his own recruits at UF.

Yep he is. But he could also schedule tougher opponents in the non-conference schedule to help him on that front instead of bitching that the rest of the conference sucks.

He's just lining up the excuses for his early exit from coaching in this conference.

Ohio State does have Oklahoma, Viriginia Tech, TCU, Oregon, and Texas on future schedules. Cincinnati and North Carolina (which are sometimes top 25 teams) are also on future schedules.

Ohio State does have a lull in quality pre big ten schedules for this year and last, but Ohio State played Texas, USC, and Miami Fl in the pre B10 schedule in past years. This isn't Wisconsin or Penn State we are talking about.

  • Is he volunteering to whore out his daughters to the other BIG teams to use as a recruiting tool?

    Bob Forapples

  • Well regardless of how others views this, he gave the rest of the B1G fair warning before he dominates the conference haha.

I don't know that this is the case. Look at the B1G results recently in the polls and in bowl games. It's obvious that other than OSU it lacks talent compared to the SEC, Pac 10 and other major conferences.

Is this an osu fan disguised as a um fan posting on an MSU message board in a thread discussing osu's recruiting?

Or simply a walvie looking forward to getting back to those good, ol' Bo and Woody days after that solid 8-5 season with Devin "Yakety Sax" Gardner at the helm?

Either way, get out of here.

  • What an idiotic thing to say. He is going to talk to the other coaches? What is he going to say? Does he think that other coaches aren't trying to recruit the best players possible? Such an arrogant ass.

Maybe he hands out a guide on how to cheat at recruiting w/o NCAA intervention?

Seriously? What a complete fuckhead. He has an entire talent rich state to himself to recruit, tries to poach MSU & Wisconsin (and others) recruits, and then complains about how everybody else is doing?

The B1G (other than Northwestern) uses the same academic standards as the SEC: the NCAA minimum.

  • So how does he suggest they try harder ?

    1) $$
    2) zero admission standards
    3) more $$
    4) 200 letters a day, per recruit
    5) hookers on recruiting visits
    6) jobs for parents
    7) kindergarten classes once in school
    8) ????

  • Does he realize how ridiculous it sounds to ask Big Ten teams to recruit better when he's taking players from those schools?
