Urban Meyer on B1G recruiting

Is this an osu fan disguised as a um fan posting on an MSU message board in a thread discussing osu's recruiting?

Or simply a walvie looking forward to getting back to those good, ol' Bo and Woody days after that solid 8-5 season with Devin "Yakety Sax" Gardner at the helm?

Either way, get out of here.

I can't be a M fan because I said something good about OSU? Where did I bring M into all of this?

Notice I said, "rest of the B1G" not "rest of the B1G except Michigan."

And what part of what I said I was false?

OSU has already dominated the conference the last 10 years or so if you haven't noticed.

They have played in 3 NC games as well as a slew of other BCS games and have won the conference something like 8 of the past 10 years. Seems to me their already dominating and getting a guy like Urban is only going to add to that IMO.

And since you brought it up, I do think Gardner is going to be a serviceable QB for M.

  • I suggest he put his time and resources into figuring out a way to get the population of the US to shift north. That way in 35 years big10 teams will have better access to all the talented HS football players.

  • Well when your plan is to just wait and see who someone else is recruiting then just go after them I can see why he wants the rest of the coaches to step it up.

This guy is burning so many bridges eventually it will catch up to him.

This probably won't be popular here, but: Academics first, last, always. I don't want B1G schools becoming SEC clones just for the sake of football.

I am with you on this! The Ivy Leagues gets it right! Pandering to a non-academically oriented fan base is demeaning but some schools apparently thrive on it.

The rest of the Big Ten is playing for seconds so long as this guy is around.

Massive lulz at anybody who thinks otherwise.

Well he has to lose to that inferior first which I don't think he is going to be doing much of.

Personally, I don't see a problem with is comments. I think it's true that the B1G needs to recruit better as the college football landscape is changing.

Look at teams like Ole Miss, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and others that are recruiting at a top 25 level. If they can do it I don't see why MSU, PSU, and Wisconsin can't.

It just seems a little strange to tell the rest of the conference to "recruit better" when he's poaching 4-stars from other Big 10 teams. If he cared so much about how the teams are recruiting, how about he not go after that talent?

To be clear here, I'm not upset anymore about the whole Pittman thing, just find it disingenuous when a guy sounds like he cares about the Big 10 as a whole when he's directly caused a couple of classes being bumped down in the rankings.

To explain the "top 25 level" thing, it depends on the service, but the SEC signs bigger classes than the Big 10. On top of that, the #13 player in Louisana is going to be a 4-star recruit; the #13 in any Big 10 State not named Ohio is going to be a 3-star recruit. Outside of the national schools, recruiting is very regionalized. The "leftovers" in the Big 10 from UM, tOSU and ND are mostly low 4-stars to high 3-stars. In SEC country, there's plenty of 4-stars to go around.

If you want the Big 10 to recruit better, then Big 10 teams are going to have to win more to raise their profile nationally.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Well the SEC already goes by his philosophy so I doubt it.

I don't understand why this is so bad, the B1G's formula right now is not working. Why not change it up and start really going all out in recruiting.

have you ever heard of the word 'standards'?

  • Another point is this... The B1G doesn't oversign and run kids off therefore this leads to on average smaller recruiting classes which are always ranked lower than classes that are high in number.

    Excellent point:

Jim Weber@JimMWeber Can't wait until Dantonio recruits better only to have Urban Meyer steal said recruits.

You can't have stolen from you something you don't OWN. We need to stop being babies about this.

I don't think academic reputation automatically goes away once the football program goes full sleaze-ball.

OSU made tremendous strides in the random academic rankings and the like at the same time that Tressel was going rogue in the football program.

Kentucky has a so-so academic reputation not because Cal is shady, but because it is actually a so-so school.

Just like UM has a great academic reputation despite the shadiness of their football program and the marginal academic quality of their "student-athletes." Same with OSU. And MSU.

I don't want anyone to cheat, but considering we already sacrifice academic standards when admitting student-athletes, i'm not sure why it has any place in the discussion. It is what it is, and has been happening in the B1G for a long-time.

  • Imagine how someone like Ferentz feels. He's been coaching in the B1G for almost 15 years and some new guy walks in and tells him how it is.

It'd be like inviting a guest over and him walking in and saying "this place smells like s***"

Ok, but in essence what he is implying is that none of the Big Ten coaches have been trying. It really is an insult. He is acting like "Hey, recruit better players!" is some kind of unique, revolutionary idea that no one else thought of. He is implying that what is happening needs to change, so he is implying the Big Ten needs to do "something" that none out of 11 other guys have been doing. THAT is a suspicious proposition, because what exactly could he be implying that not one of them has been doing (or at least doing successfully)?

Side piece, SEC tactics, Quitting/not quitting/quitting/time with family/job at ESPN/new major college hire... I would be worried about the things that seem natural to Urban Meyer and not to any other coach.

    Must poach better

Interesting since Urban KNOWS that the score after the Nut/MSU game gave him the win, but he got lucky due to the fumble/TD being called back. He is such pond scum. AND - who does he thing HE is? The self-appointed ambassador of all things Big 10?

    jodi

  • So Urban, tell us how many recruits you've poached from SEC teams in this class?

    Yeah, thought so.

Takes some big stones to be THAT patronizing to the fellow coaches in your conference. THAT YOU POACHED FROM.

    Asshole.

  • There's not enough talent in the north to recruit that well. The SEC dominates because the best talent is in the south.

That new guy's coaching resume wipes the floor with Ferentz's resume. Everyone in Iowa would sell their left testicle to have Urban Meyer instead of Ferentz.

the whine is excessive in this thread.

MSU just needs to roll out on the field and win games. bottom line.

Doubt it. Like it was posted earlier, there are still some standards despite the sense of 'win at all costs' . With the douchebag Meyer, you have a short term fix who will most certainly put that shithole back on probation because of his apparent lack of decorum, and respect for his league. Hopefully he has a heart attack and dies.

  • Meyer is right - B1G is slipping further behind the other conferences and we haven't had a legit contender in years. B1G is supposed to be the wealthiest conference because of all the BTN / TV money but why aren't the schools investing the money into the football programs?
