Urban Meyer on B1G recruiting

  • scott91575 said...

First of all, 1 extra win a year over a long span is the difference in Ohio State to Washington, Clemson, or Georgia Tech. Ohio State in the last 100 years averaged about 1 more win a year than those programs. This is not baseball we are talking about. College football teams only have 12 to 14 games a year.

Besides that, the fact you guys want to put your head in the sand and act like the B10 is fine or can't recruit better is just plain sad. It's also pretty funny that he made no specific mentions of which schools, yet the lost Badger fan and MSU fans suddenly jump up to defend themselves. Methinks you doth protest too much. If you thought you were really doing fine, why wouldn't your first reaction be "yeah, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, etc. really need to pick it up." Instead your first reaction is to defend your team because you don't think your own recruiting is up to snuff.

I also just want to keep this thread going to see how many pages it can get. Perhaps the thread title can be changed to "let's get 100 pages of bitching about Urban Meyer!"

Actually no. I just checked Washington the last ten years, and they have 44 wins, 60 less than OSU over that time frame (about 50 less than UW)....or 6 less wins per year than the Buckeyes. So basically you're wrong.

Saying he is unethical or even a cheater really doesn't bother most OSU fans.

    They don't care.

It's like Kentucky in basketball (without the same success)

As long as they are winning anything is OK.

Yet were right there with everyone in bashing him prior to him becoming the coach

    lol

    Basically you can't read.

I was making a point of what 1 extra win a year adds up to over a long timeframe. It doesn't seem like much, but it adds up. So when you think of the best college football teams, the difference between the top and the 2nd and 3rd tiers over the last 100 years (I will spell it to help you, one hundred) is about 1 game a year. Before you ask, yes, Ohio State, Clemson, Washington, and Georgia Tech have a similar number of games played.

  • To put your ten year comparison into further perspective, in those 10 years there are only 4 teams with more wins than Ohio State. Boise State (14), LSU (4), Oklahoma (3), and USC (2). So once you get near the top of the college football ladder, 9 extra wins in a 10 year span is pretty good unless you play in a garbage conference like Boise State. How many more do you expect Ohio State to win? Which team would you accept advice from if the 4th most wins and the most in the B10 is not good enough for you?

Oh, and let's just not talk about the fact Wisconsin played in 2 more games and their pre B10 schedule is an annual joke.

After the game walking out of the stadium OSU fans were greeted by MSU fans taunting us with "just wait until you play Michigan" like that was a threat of some kind...I had always respected MSU fans prior to that.

What kind of bizarro MSU fans did you run into?

I can honestly say I have never heard an MSU fan utter such a statement, on a message board or in real life.

Were these unsolicited statements that were just hurled at you out of left field? Just wait until you play Michigan?!?!?! Really?!?!?...and what...win?

It never happened. Only OSU and UM blow each each other to artificially inflate the importance of their now irrelevant game.

It definitely did happen. It was mostly drunk kids, but there was a pretty big crowd of them. It was completely unsolicited, but again probably just drunk, dumb, college kids who were mostly looking to start trouble with all buckeye fans passing by.

Well thanks for taking a group of two or three people and using them as a representation of our entire fanbase. You're right, most of us on here just adore UM.

I'm sure it happened. It my 20+ years of attending MSU games of course this happens all the time. A wild gang of yoots in MSU gear hunting down opposing team fans after the game. lol

Let me put it another way:

How was Oregon able to build up its football program over the past 8 years?

Was it because of its tradition rich football history and tropical weather?

    Phil Knight.

Or was this a rhetorical question?

I didn't take it as Meyer calling out any school in particular and it wouldn't have made a difference if he did. The point is that his comments insinuated that other schools aren't pulling in talent like middle of the road SEC teams even though they easily could if they "recruited better." The problems with that are as follows: Recruiting is only one part of college football and one which depends heavily on location and a team's name. On top of this, Urban Meyer is a star junkie. He looks at where some dorks with no playing or coaching experience rank a kid in order to form his opinion on how teams are recruiting. Ask the 2011 MSU team how much recruiting rankings matter. Or the 2012 Northwestern team. Beyond the recruiting aspect, his comments were stupid because he acted like he would say something in person to other coaches when everyone with half a brain (read non Buckeyes) knew he was too much of a pussy to do so. If you're going to spout off about other people's performance you best be able to say it to their faces.

  • Why is this thread still on the front page? This subject has more than ran its course. go away bucks.

    Summary:

    *Urban is an ass
*People dont like him unless he's their own coach
    *Urban recruits well
    *Urban stirs things up
*Urban left Florida on shaky terms at best
*Urban was lucky to escape EL with a win this year
*Urban isn't recruiting any better than Tressel. OSU has advantages in recruiting that he wouldn't have at the vast majority of B1G schools.

Nope. It simply never happened. You buckeyes are the trash of the big. Your fanbases reputation is well established and documented. A bunch of inbred hicks trying to trade tattoos for handjobs and whatnot. Your experience not only never happened but you're just trying to project your well earned rep onto someone else. Silly O$U

I would think a great majority of people would not like him PERIOD for what he represents. I never realized what a dirtbag he was until the stories started coming out of Florida.
