Urban's Downfall @ Florida

  • Interesting read. How long until history repeats itself @ O$U?

From champs to chomped: How Urban Meyer broke Florida football - NCAA Football - Sporting News

  • Just read this, verrrrry interesting and completely believable. You can only play favorites for so long before it bites you. Wonder if this happens at OSU eventually also

    dimambr3

  • Since he doesn't redshirt, he'll be done by the time all of Tressel's players are gone and he doesn't get his hands on another Tebow.

    Sp4rt4ns

  • Sheesh. What a douche. It'll be interesting to see what happens as he takes over a program on probation. By the time they're off probation, a lot of the problems referred to in the article ("Circle of Trust" for talented players, drug use, etc.) will likely be rearing their ugly heads.

It's hard to pick (so many choices! it's like the menu at a Chinese restaurant), but I think this anecdote is my favorite:

It was [Percy] Harvin, more than anyone, who epitomized the climate Meyer created. While former players say Harvin always was treated differently as a member of Meyer’s Circle of Trust, it was the beginning of his sophomore season—after he helped lead the Gators to the 2006 national title—that it became blatant. That's also when it began to contribute negatively toward team chemistry.

    ...

It only got worse as Harvin’s career progressed. At one point during the 2008 season, multiple sources confirmed that Harvin, now a prominent member of the Minnesota Vikings, physically attacked wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales, grabbing him by the neck and throwing him to the ground. Harvin had to be pulled off Gonzales by two assistant coaches—but was never disciplined.

When asked about the Harvin incident, Gonzales—now offensive coordinator at Illinois—said, “I think it’s a little overblown. I mean, every great player wants his voice to be heard.”

Said Meyer: “Something did happen and something was handled. I don’t think it’s fair to Percy Harvin or Billy Gonzales to talk about it.”

Gonzales left Florida for LSU—a lateral move—after the 2009 season, and did so by placing his keys, cell phone and resignation letter on Meyer’s desk. There were rumors that Gonzales resigned with a Post-it note on Meyer’s desk.

  • I love how he catagorically denies everything that is a he said/she said scenario, and simply plays dumb when something from a more reputable source makes a claim.

Dude lied about his health and bailed ship right when he saw the writing on the wall.

As for his "family" time crap, plenty of rumors about how he liked to "extend" his reach with coeds.

And the stuff about calling uf about a "gentleman's agreement" right when he publicly dissed MD....anyone else get the feeling MD knew all about that, and is quietly stewing right now in eager anticipation of September 29th?

  • hmmm, interesting. Lots of my friends seem to be afraid of what Urban is going to do with tOSU. Me, not so much. He doesn't have either his OC or DC that helped make UF very good. We'll see...

edit: anyone else heard rumors about some... er... co-ed extra-ciricular activities at UF?

  • So much like Calipari at Kentucky, Urban and tOSU are a perfect match. Just win, baby fan bases.

    Fletch

  • This is juicy stuff. Again, the NCAA needs to grow a brain or just let programs do whatever they want. Just this half ass shit does not help coaches/programs who don't cheat.

I have not, as of 1:14pm central time today, received confirmation either way, but Im still working on that. (rumor has it that they have been very good kids through HS, and not exactly PinCushions in college. Subject to change)

  • I seriously wish every O$U recruit would read this article before committing. Idk how many recruits stop in and visit tDuff but I wish we could pin this at the top of the page and title the thread "READ BEFORE COMMITTING TO O$U" It's criminal what that man is doing.

  • methinks that Pope Urban doth protest too much:

"Meyer denies allegations that he cast Florida and its players in a dark light when he spoke to the Diggs family"

“I’ve never heard of Circle of Trust before in my life,” Meyer said.

Said Meyer: “Something did happen and something was handled. I don’t think it’s fair to Percy Harvin or Billy Gonzales to talk about it.”

At least 30 players were arrested in Meyer’s six seasons. Said Meyer: "Was I dealing with entitlement issues? Yes. But they were great kids. If they weren't, I would've gotten rid of them."

After the 2008 season, Thomas says he was told he had to “move on” because he wasn’t in the team’s plans for 2009.“ I told (Meyer) I was on track to graduate, I wasn’t a problem and I did everything I was supposed to do—I just had a knee injury,” Thomas said. “I told them I wasn’t leaving, and if they tried to force me to leave, I was going to tell everyone everything." The next day, Thomas says he was given a medical hardship letter by position coach Chuck Heater stating Thomas had an injury that would prohibit him from playing football. The medical hardship scholarship doesn’t count against the NCAA limit of 85, and allows the affected player to stay on academic scholarship. It also made room for another recruit. Meyer denied this tactic of roster management.“ a coach, I don’t have any say in the medical decisions,” Meyer said. “If the doctors say a player can’t play any longer, he can’t play.”

Meyer said the alleged incidents happened “before I was hired—in December, but I can’t remember the exact timeline.” Meyer was hired at Ohio State on Nov. 28, 2011.

“Let me make one thing very clear,” Meyer said. “There are no issues with Urban Meyer and the NCAA.”

“I did not tell Stan Drayton that we had a gentleman’s agreement with Will,” Meyer said.

That being said, it's really eye-opening how scummy Urban and the $EC is. Makes scUM almost palatable.

  • Interesting. Many people in Columbus are claiming that the program is currently being run like a military operation. That doesn't mix with this description of UF.

Give it some time to develop. The true form of osu will be on display right after the two year probation. Right now urban is trying his hardest to do things the right way but it won't last long because he's the head of the beast.

I am sure he is...but what about when that 5 star he promised playing time to as a freshman gets in trouble? Generally these coaches are wired a certain way. If Bobby Knight coached now he would be a royal asshole and demean players.

OSU, probably somewhat like Florida, will allow for him to think he is God himself. I have always asserted that Urban will eventually hang himself and possibly OSU with him. People in mid-Michigan really like Dantonio. People in most parts of Ohio would gladly lube up their virgin daughter and video tape Urban laying some pipe. Izzo isn't even a fair comparison in Michigan. You give a scumbag that much power, he will mess it up somehow.

My bet is that they have at least 1 awesome year with him but he is out within 6 years amid some sort of scandal.
