Using "We" or "Us" to describe a sports team.

  • I'm not particularly a grammar nazi, but unless you either.....

    Attended an institution, or
    Worked for an institution,

Then using "we" or "us" to describe that school is just tacky, in my opinion. Does anyone out there object to this line of thinking?

What about professional teams? I can't use "we" when referring to my Lions?

  • I find it sooo annoying with professional teams for some reason. I mean, to each his own, but it's weird.

I work with some diehard Cubs fans and they go, "Well we lost 8-2 last night." I reply, "Wait, your softball team?" and then somehow that baits an argument.

Do what you want. But unless you play for the Lions, or work for the organization, saying "we" sounds tacky.

  • It really only bothers me when people do it with a team from a university that they have no affiliation to.

Remind yourself. Nobody built like you, you design yourself.

Why yes, it offends the senses. Simply gauche. Hearing someone say 'We' without a direct connection to the team gives me the vapors.

  • sounds pretty normal to me for 50 odd years I have been a dedicated fan
You pay the money for tickets, gear, etc, etc, the team wants you to take "fan" ownership.
It's even normal to hear people say things like my town, my state, my lake, etc, etc

    But carry on

Such as when a "fan" from a certain school to the southeast says we're going to beat you.

Aren't fans apart of the program essentially? They buy licensed merchandise, tickets, etc. Wouldn't be a program without the fan.

    This.

What an original thread, never seen anything like it here. Kudos to the OP.

Are you saying that my late parents, who never attended MSU, were wrong to "attach" themselves to MSU by using "we"?

Nah. Only an idiot who never attended the school that they are bandwagon fans of would concoct such stupidity.

They fit the description, so yes.

I didn't say "attended" I said "had an affiliation to." If their kid(s) went there, or they had more ties to the school than just showing up to a game or two each fall, its fine.

Edit: not that I'm any type of authority on this lol its just what I personally think.

  • Tuition payments gives them "we" permissions.

  • Re: Pro Teams:

Staudt made fun of some people last week that referred to the Tigers as US or WE..

My opinion, if you have season tickets you can refer to the team as Us or we, if you go to a lot of games you should be able to. If you are a 1-2 games a year person, it sounds weird. But if you're going to spend a bunch of money on season tix, I have no problem with you calling it your team, hell you support them much better than I do and many others.

My wife and I have three degrees, season tix to ftbl, mens bask, and attend many other games. Volunteer over 100 hrs a year for MSU, donate, etc.... I have no problem calling it my school, my team, etc....

  • If you use "we" consistently, I see no problem with it.
Now, if you're inconsistent with the use of "we"(For instance, saying "WE won" whenever your team wins, but saying "THEY lost" whenever your team loses), then I have an issue.
If you pour your heart into a team(College or pro), then I don't see a problem with saying "we" regardless of whether or not you actually attended/played for the university/team.
Hell, coach Jim Schwartz awarded the game ball to the fans after the MNF game because of all the false starts WE helped cause(Yes, I was at that game)

Season ticket holders for more than one season might qualify as well.

  • This topic is so tired, and I feel like I only see it on here. For a plethora of reasons, whether that be money, proximity, or a specific academic program, people decide to go to smaller schools instead of big time universities with relevant football programs. Are they supposed to be subject exclusively to meaningless football games that are barely on the radar in the very city they play in?

College football would be much smaller if the only passionate fans were ones that attended the university. Stop with this.

    Spartan Dawgs20

  • I had a huge "we" moment after flopping 750 on a pair of tickets to watch the Tigers get drubbed by the Yanks in a playoff game last fall.
