VAN FREAKING HALEN

  • I really hope they play Ice Cream Man on this tour. Amazing song.

Their biggest hits during the DLR era were cover songs: "You really got me", "Pretty woman", "Where have all the good times gone", "Dancing in the street" - then there was "Jump" and "Panama." It's tough to give a band props for covering other peoples' music and turning them into hits. Aside from maybe a handful (and that's being generous) of tracks most of their own material is just awful. Go back and listen to "Why can't this be love" and tell me you think that's a great song lol

What about Runnin' with the Devil (9th greatest rock and roll song, albeit according to VH1 the music channel) and Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love? Two spectacular songs they wrote themselves.

  • Van Halen is fun music, but there is basically no depth to any of their songs. Gets old quick if it's anything other than background music at a party or something.

I'm not disputing the fact that VH has some good tracks. But their overall body of work is absolutely horrible. Sure, there's a handful of gems here and there - at least a handful written by them - but the songs their most known for are covers. Their music has always been very one dimensional and not very imaginative - although I will give them props for "Jump", which is a phenomenal pop song.

Went to the reunion tour a few years ago! Awesome and Eddie's son was like 16. Kicked Micheal Anthony out. Valerie was standing by us on the soundboard area keeping an eye on Wolfgang! They were great and it was my first time seeing them. JLArockon

I was there and they sounded great. I suspect Eddie doesn't have any of his original teeth though.

and Wolfgang just stood there motionless. It was as if he was terrified to play a wrong note...like Uncle Alex was going to whack him with a gong mallet or something. lol

  • Van Hagar gets slammed a lot, but "Black and Blue" is one of my favorite Van Halen tunes. One of the reasons they were so wimpy-sounding with Sammy is because Eddie was concentrating more on keyboards, which he actually started doing on "1984".

I'm not holding my breath for the next album, but I'll be interested in hearing it. I wonder if they've brought in a background vocalist for the new stuff. Michael Anthony excelled at that and he covered up a lot of Dave's shortcomings.

Written like some one that has no idea what he is talking about... except surface level radio play.

  • One other thing: LoneWolf may get a boner over balloons, confetti, a twirling David Lee Roth, and horribly edited music, but I think that teaser video sucked.

You are talking about their greatest hits, if you actually listed to their albums you'd find a lot of depth and influence.

I have owned every DLR VH album and have a lot of VH in my iTunes. It's just not good, very corny, and aside from 1984 VH never really progressed

  • I feel sorry for anyone that can't be thrilled by listening to early Van Halen. It might not be the some of the deepest stuff ever made(then again, by definition...not much music is), but still the only band that makes me want to climb onto the roof of a freaking car and jump off still to this day. Maybe the best aural adrenaline rush ever in my book. Almost no filler songs on Roth era albums, too. Not many bands can make a similar claim.

Meh, the fact that you keep trumpeting 1984 tells me all I need to know. This isn't your territory to judge. You want VH to be Siouxsie and the Banshees and they aren't. You can't understand what they were to American rock and roll, which was basically tired and directionless until VH arrived.

There was a thriving punk scene, yes, but even those guys appreciated what VH did.

I remember listening to a Sammy Hager interview on Howard Stern and Eddie treated his mouth cancer by cutting off pieces of his tongue and injecting it.

DLR is cheesy, but VH made some great songs and still has influence today if your persona creates a cartoon character.

Don't knock on "Jump"!!! Some of the greatest lyrics in all of the entire complete history of vocal music. Bested only by the chanting monks.

I get up, and nothing gets me down. i like to jump. and then go round and round And I know, just how it feels. You've got to roll with the punches to get to what's real Oh can't you see me standing here, I've got my back against the record machine, I ain't the worst that you've seen. Oh can't you see what I mean ?

Might as well jump. Jump ! Might as well jump. Go ahead, jump. Jump ! Go ahead, jump.

Hey you ! Who said that ? Baby how you been ? You say you don't know, you won't know until you begin. Well can't you see me standing here, I've got my back against the record machine I ain't the worst that you've seen. Oh can't you see what I mean ?

Might as well jump. Jump! Go ahead, jump. Might as well jump. Jump! Go ahead, jump. Jump!

  • Van Halen seems to be a love them or hate them band, but I'm pretty neutral on them. They don't have a lot of great songs but they don't have many downright shitty songs either.

Huh? Not too much filler? Those early albums only had like 9 or 10 songs on them there was no room for filler lol

No I'm not saying it was deep or anything or even meant to be deep but looking back its just garbage. They covered dancing in the streets for fuck's sake. Honestly that music does nothing for me. Hell, even in high school we thought VH sucked, it was junior high level. By the time high school rolled around we had Smiths, Cure, DK, to name a few, that were just far more interesting than VH covering another Kinks song

Into what? Pop? Arena Rock? More keyboards, less guitar? They DEVOLVED and that album was the first step towards Van Hagar, which I'm sure you loathe. You can't have this argument both ways and your dismissal of everything before 1984 shows you are hating just to hate.

I'll Wait is a choice cut though.
