VIACOM pulled the plug on DirecTV.

so they want $0.03 more per day = $0.75 per month = $9 per year.
9*20M = 180M....not 1billion that direct tv is talking about.

    going the other way.... 1Billiion / 20M = $50 per year = $4.17 per month ~ $0.14 per day.

not sure which is right. $9 more per year after a 7 year contract doesn't sound outrageous. $50 seems too high.

I like this quote: "That said, distributors like DirecTV and Dish generally do not want to sell channels on an à la carte or individual basis to customers. They just want more control over what they put in the packages they sell to customers." from the nyt http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/10/directv-viacom-dispute-may-affect-access-for-20-million-customers/

    Unless its 6+ year contract...then it's a billion.

If DirecTv was smart, they could have crushed the PR battle by advertising a drop in rates for all of their customers to coincide with the dropping of Viacom channels. But they won't because they're just as greedy as Viacom.

I think they gave everyone the Encore Movie package for free to replace the Viacom channels.

But a rate drop or Free NFL package to everyone for a season would really hammer the point.

Yep. I am an mlb.tv subscriber.

I was just pointing out to DITKA that MLB Extra Innings isn't a service that needs to have DirecTV to access.

And really, NFL Sunday ticket is pretty dumb. I am a Lions fan out-of-market and I really don't run into any situation where I can't watch them. 16 games in a season and take away the National Broadcasts. (currently 5). Then every once in awhile they will broadcast a random Lions game for whatever reason. Honestly, if I am sitting at home on a Fall Sunday and want to watch the Lions when they aren't on TV, I can always go to a bar that will have all of the games on.

NFL Sunday Ticket is probably awesome for the fantasy football dork. I guess I don't see why DirecTV is hailed as the ultimate sports fan solution. The only service they offer exclusively is NFL Sunday Ticket, and you can purchase that through devices like the PS3 by paying a bit more money.

The nfl ticket is not just for fantasy fans, it is for football fans. Besides watching the Lions, I like to watch the Saints, Packers, Bears, Patriots, Cowboys, Eagles, Giants , Chargers , 49ers, Steelers and Ravens. Now that Peyton is with Denver, I will be watching. Also directv has additional channels for events like Wimbledon, Masters, US Open, etc when these events are being televised so you can choose which match or which group you want to follow. I do not know if ps3 allows you to watch on the Internet or your cell phone the nfl ticket, but directv does.

What if they come to a deal? Then DirecTv has to tell everyone they are raising their rates. I would think that advertising a drop in the rate would also appear to show subscribers that both sides have walked and to never expect Viacom channels to come back.

I do agree with you if DirecTv and Viacom do not come to an agreement or a temporary drop in rates until a deal is reached... but it appears the short term benefit for current subscribers is free Encore and that is much easier than describing a temporary drop in rates.

  • I called DTV to "cancel" and ended up getting Starz free for 6 months, Showtime free for 12 months and $5 off my bill for the next 3 months.

Viacom wants a 30% increase and Directv currently pays about $2.50 a month for Viacom's channels. So by a few pennies he means 75 cents.

Wait, DirecTV only pays $2.50 per month for about 16 channels total? That seems really damn low considering ESPN gets over $3.00 per subscriber.

ESPN is the oldest and one of the most popular non-OTA networks in existence. They charge that because they can.

It was really awesome to come home yesterday and flip on the TV to find 2 giants of media fighting like children with 3 obnoxious scrolling bars on the screen each explaining what big dumb jerks the other company is being, and how we're the ones that are really trying to fight for your best interests and so you should really call the other guys and tell them how much you think they suck. And in case you didn't notice all our scrolling messages, don't worry we'll continue smearing each other with shit every other commercial on breaks.

You guys can't just figure this stuff out at the negotiating table like adults?

    Accepted. Nice.

Viacom's channels are Comedy Central, Logo, BET, Spike, TV Land, Nick@Nite, Nickelodeon, TeenNick, Nick Jr., MTV, VH1, MTV2, Tr3́s, CMT, Palladia. I watch ESPN a lot more than all of Viacom's 16 channels.

MLB Extra Innings isn't exclusive to DirecTV.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLB_Extra_Innings#Availability

True, but my point is can any of the other providers package both NFL and MLB for big time sports fans like DirecTV does?

Not bad, but I would advise looking through the slickdeals.net thread on haggling DirecTV.

You could of had Sunday Ticket on top of this at least.

They'll add $10 off for 12 months with minimal negotiation too (on top of the standard Starz, Showtime, $5 for 3 months offer). Just have to get past the first person and on to the cancellation dude. They have tons of extra phone people hired too, never had quicker service.

I got Sunday Ticket for free last season so I figured I wouldn't get it 2 years in a row. From prior calls I'm getting the Sports Pack and HD service for free.

I do need to call soon so I don't get billed for this year's Sunday Ticket so maybe I'll try to get a deal on it then.

I'm so sick of these cable tv companies. FiOS has went from 99 dollars to 160 for the same package in 2 years I've had it. The only competition, Comcast sucks donkey dick and isn't much cheaper. I would never do a dish. I'm tired of paying for 300 channels when all I want is about 40 . Enough is enough and its time for a change!
