Verizon to eliminate unlimited data plans when you upgrade

  • For those of us that were able to keep our unlimited plans

Verizon to end unlimited data for upgraders

Verizon will force smartphone customers with unlimited data plans to switch to tiered plans when they upgrade.

  • "It is not clear what they plan to do with folks who are on a 4G LTE grandfathered unlimited plan, but essentially those folks might be considered hold-overs from the unlimited 3G data era, and they might fall under this as well. We will dig deeper to see if it becomes more clear, but it is looking like the folks on 3G unlimited data plans are the only ones targeted right now."

Have to wait to see how this all shakes out.

  • I think the worst thing they've done is institute the purely revenue generating "upgrade fee." At least this tier structure makes sense because of the limited supply of bandwidth available. But the upgrade fee is simply a way to get you to pay even more money. And personally, I think it's a bad idea because you risk phone sales to the people that always want the next big thing that comes out. But, maybe Verizon wasn't making very much on phones to begin with.

So now, to sum it up, they're charging you to upgrade and forcing you into a tiered plan at the same time. Wow.

Although, for the record, I really don't use much data anymore because of wifi being everywhere. Plus, the share plan is nice so not everyone has to purchase $30 data plans.

    Sprint.

Sprint is the way to go. I worked with cell phones all the way thru school. Sprint has the unlimited data, good phones, and lowest prices. Not the best service 100% of the time, but I can live with that.

  • Did you guys really think you would continue getting unlimited data plans for as long as you wanted them, while others had to deal with data caps and a tiered fee system?

I last signed a contract with Verizon in August of 2010. At that time I got unlimited data (3G). I've always assumed, despite the term "grandfathered" being thrown around, that when I wanted to buy a new phone I'd be signing a new contract and it wouldn't include unlimited data.

Verizon is the last national carrier to charge for an upgrade. Sprint and AT&T charge more than Verizon. I don't see anything wrong with a tiered program for data usage. Customers with the huge data downloads should pay for what they use.

oh I agree about the tiered data plans. I think that's a good idea and that's fair. but that's because there's actually a supply and demand driving that necessity. there is only so much bandwidth and you can't have a bunch of people using as much of it as they want without paying for it.

but the upgrade fee is just another example of how companies are trying to nickel and dime their customers. I find it a little ridiculous that you have to pay a fee in order to buy a phone from them. it's like a cover charge for a cell phone company.

So bait and switch is all good and fair? I pay $30 a month for unlimited data from comcast at home, plus another $30 for unlimited with Verizon. Once people switch to 4g and realize they have close to cable modem speeds to DL and start watching movies and using their phones for more than facebooking, it is easy to go over 2gb. All this bullshit about only 2% of the users come close to 2gb usage is from an article that is a year or 2 old and only dealt with 3g speeds. I hit about 1.7gb/month and that is on 3g just mostly surfing, with a phone that is dying. Once I switch to 4g I can see how it could easily go to 4 - 6gb/month usage if not more. Verizon currently has a commercial with a kid live recording his coach giving a speech to the team. That 5 minute clip would probably be about 750 mb upload at a minimum, that kid just used almost half his usage in 5 minutes.

These companies are pushing people to use the technology and then they want you to take it up the ass to pay for it.

The other BS answer is that Verizon is the last to charge for an upgrade. From other people I've talked to, those upgrade charges are waived by the carriers if you ask for it. Sprint is looking more and more like a viable option. Plus they typically have some of the better Droids.

Wow. This post if just full of wanting your cake and eating it too.

First, wireless data is more expensive than cable delivered data. So you can't compare the two.

Second, there is a cost associated with building out these data networks. Verizon is spending like crazy to expand 4G coverage. Plus their usage continues to increase as more subscribers come aboard. Once the 4G capable iPhone lands you will see a crush of new 4G subscribers. All this means bandwidth, coverage, etc. Don't you remember the stories from a couple of years ago about AT&Ts network in Manhatten?

Third, you do have the option to go to another carrier. That is what is great about the free market. However, remember, you usually get what you pay for. Sprint is cheap for a reason. Their coverage absolutely sucks. I know a guy that got smartphones for his entire family last summer from Sprint. He took them home. They couldn't even get a regular cellular signal (let alone data) in their house. They live in Madison Heights!! Edit: within an hour he drove back up to the Sprint location and returned the phones.

All this whining just shows how spoiled people are. Did you really think wireless data would be unlimited for $30 forever?!? lol That is lunatic thinking.

I agree with everything you say, but have a question for you. Do you not use wifi ever and, if true, why not? Almost every place I go has free wifi now (hell even the big boy near me has it) so i rarely use any of Verizon's data.

Share plan sounds good on surface, but, undoubtedly, those plans are going to start at the $100 or so mark. No way they let you share the $30 2GB plan. Plus, you can bet they'll charge you a phone access fee per phone like they currently do for shared minutes to use that shared data you bought.

Are you talking about the $10 per line charge? lol Really? You are complaining about that? I pay $80 for a family plan, then $10 for the second line. That is a heck of a deal if you ask me. (this doesn't include the data plans, FYI).

Yeah so in addition to the $10 extra line charge it will be $10 dollar extra line data charge. Seems pretty clear and probably true.
