I think the worst thing they've done is institute the purely revenue generating "upgrade fee." At least this tier structure makes sense because of the limited supply of bandwidth available. But the upgrade fee is simply a way to get you to pay even more money. And personally, I think it's a bad idea because you risk phone sales to the people that always want the next big thing that comes out. But, maybe Verizon wasn't making very much on phones to begin with.
So now, to sum it up, they're charging you to upgrade and forcing you into a tiered plan at the same time. Wow.
Although, for the record, I really don't use much data anymore because of wifi being everywhere. Plus, the share plan is nice so not everyone has to purchase $30 data plans.

Verizon is the last national carrier to charge for an upgrade. Sprint and AT&T charge more than Verizon. I don't see anything wrong with a tiered program for data usage. Customers with the huge data downloads should pay for what they use.

Did you guys really think you would continue getting unlimited data plans for as long as you wanted them, while others had to deal with data caps and a tiered fee system?
I last signed a contract with Verizon in August of 2010. At that time I got unlimited data (3G). I've always assumed, despite the term "grandfathered" being thrown around, that when I wanted to buy a new phone I'd be signing a new contract and it wouldn't include unlimited data.

So bait and switch is all good and fair? I pay $30 a month for unlimited data from comcast at home, plus another $30 for unlimited with Verizon. Once people switch to 4g and realize they have close to cable modem speeds to DL and start watching movies and using their phones for more than facebooking, it is easy to go over 2gb. All this bullshit about only 2% of the users come close to 2gb usage is from an article that is a year or 2 old and only dealt with 3g speeds. I hit about 1.7gb/month and that is on 3g just mostly surfing, with a phone that is dying. Once I switch to 4g I can see how it could easily go to 4 - 6gb/month usage if not more. Verizon currently has a commercial with a kid live recording his coach giving a speech to the team. That 5 minute clip would probably be about 750 mb upload at a minimum, that kid just used almost half his usage in 5 minutes.
These companies are pushing people to use the technology and then they want you to take it up the ass to pay for it.
The other BS answer is that Verizon is the last to charge for an upgrade. From other people I've talked to, those upgrade charges are waived by the carriers if you ask for it. Sprint is looking more and more like a viable option. Plus they typically have some of the better Droids.

I agree with everything you say, but have a question for you. Do you not use wifi ever and, if true, why not? Almost every place I go has free wifi now (hell even the big boy near me has it) so i rarely use any of Verizon's data.
Share plan sounds good on surface, but, undoubtedly, those plans are going to start at the $100 or so mark. No way they let you share the $30 2GB plan. Plus, you can bet they'll charge you a phone access fee per phone like they currently do for shared minutes to use that shared data you bought.

That is lunatic thinking.
Verizon to eliminate unlimited data plans when you upgrade
