Verizon to eliminate unlimited data plans when you upgrade

I have the unlimited with Verizon, and it's fantastic for like $30 a month. Looks like I'll have the iPhone 4 for a couple more years.

    This.

So you never expect anyone to keep their word or honor their contracts?

I've finally met someone more cynical than myself and it scares me.

How are they not honoring contracts?

My contract is for 2 years. I'll get unlimited data for 2 years.

They aren't forcing me to change my plan until my contract is up, are they?

    Phil McCrackin

  • What happens when your contract is up? Doesn't seem like they would just automatically drop you from unlimited without having you sign SOMETHING. If you buy a phone full retail is there a loophole? relevant to my interests.

    teh_Spartan

  • I'm going to guess that the next thing they do is switch to new every 2.5 years. I know for a long time it was every 24 months, then they reduced it to every 20 months, it wouldn't surprise me to see them go to new every 30 months next, and raise the price of the phones an extra $50.

  • We have been with Verizon for 12 years and when our contract expires in November we are switching carriers.

    Izzo Court

  • Regardless of the carrier, all the companies know they have millions of customers who have become slaves to their phones and when you've put yourself into that lifestyle, you can expect to pay for it. It's strictly business, Sonny.

  • I will threaten to leave, they will give it to me. The whole dog and pony show.

  • I got a 3G phone last summer. So, it looks like if I want to keep unlimited data I'll either have to upgrade to a 4G phone before this new policy takes effect or keep my current phone for a few years.

My understanding is that if you change your phone without any contract renewal, such as from buying an old phone second hand, nothing about your plan changes. So, maybe I'll look for a 4G phone on craigslist or something. That way, I get the best of both worlds and none of the bullshit.

I'm on a family plan with my parents, and I'd like to avoid changing carriers for the time being despite how much I loathe these greedy, awful business practices. I hear good things about Virgin. Might swing over to them if Verizon really goes too far.

I will probably shop around for a different carrier when my contract is up in August just to see what is out there, but I have a feeling I'll end up with Verizon again.

Sure, Sprint offers unlimited data, but it's not like Sprint doesn't come with any downsides either. And to be honest, unlimited data isn't really that big of a deal to me. It's nice not worrying, but I've never noticed my data use going over 2GB/mo.

    Phil McCrackin

  • My wife and I use wifi 99.9% of the time and might use 2 hours total of talk time a month. We do text a lot, but that uses no bandwith since texts are fit in the empty spaces between data packets. For the $130 we pay a month we're not even using $10 worth of Verizon's network.

    Izzo Court

  • What are the tiered fees going to be and what are the penalties for going over? I've never even thought of them because I've been unlimited forever. Now I'll have to figure all this crap out. I have zero idea how much I even use it.

  • I think that what's being missed here Is that you will lose your unlimited data only if you go from a single line data plan to a family shared data plan. For instance, I have an iPhone 4s, which is 3g, and when I upgrade to a 4g device after this new implementation, I will still have my unlimited data. If I decided to go to a family share data plan, I would then lose that unlimited data plan.

That's not how I read the article. When you get a new phone you would be moved away from the unlimited plan.

I think that is going to be a different story. 3G is different from 4G and they have separate pricing. 4G unlimited has already gone by the wayside and now, unless you are grandfathered in, you will fall under tiered as it is. At least, that is how I currently understand it.

I plan on doing that in the future though. Buying a phone on eBay and activate it on my account. No contract to agree too, so there should be no reason for them to change the plan.

Although, if you are on month to month, I am curious if they would be beholden to the terms as they stand, or if they can just give you warning saying that your plan is changing in 30 days and then change it at that time. I dont know...

Did you guys really think you would continue getting unlimited data plans for as long as you wanted them, while others had to deal with data caps and a tiered fee system?

I last signed a contract with Verizon in August of 2010. At that time I got unlimited data (3G). I've always assumed, despite the term "grandfathered" being thrown around, that when I wanted to buy a new phone I'd be signing a new contract and it wouldn't include unlimited data.

I was still on an alltel plan on verizon until a few months ago, the plan is still active I believe and could still now have it if I chose. it was the pick 2 for 75 cents a day plan. only drawback was no data but really can't beat unlimited texting and free nights and weekends for $22.50 a month. It's almost been 4 years since Verizon bought them out so it would not seem crazy that the "Unlimited" plans would be able to stick around as well.

I wonder if they are going to do the BS where they say that the new phone is not compatible with that plan and force you onto a new plan. They did that a while ago with the nationwide plan.

    sparty569

  • what about those who have unlimited on 4G already? I signed a contract extension couple of months ago when I upgraded to the Droid Razr, was able to keep my unlimited data...is that gone next time I upgrade? Gone now?

  • I saw somewhere in the last week that you could get a no contract Google Galaxy Nexus for $400. So you end up paying more up front. The other thing that is cool about not subsidizing the phone is that the plans (not the data plan) are cheaper.

you can, but that phone only works on ATT and T mobile.

And for the first time in over a decade, loyal customers are looking into options other than Verizon. I don't understand where you are coming from. Thank you for repeating the options I put up there as well. Verizon used to at least have a small reward to longtime customers, now they are just looking to nickel and dime us. I can afford what I have right now, but if my phone is going to start going over the data and I'm going to start having bills close to $150, it just isn't worth it. I like how as a long time loyal customer companies feel they can walk all over me.

...and you can walk all over them...leave them. After enough lost revenue, they will price differently. You vote for them everytime you use and pay for the service. Don't like them, don't use them

I've been with Verizon since 2001. Every time I've bought a new phone (roughly 18-24 months) I've had to sign a new contract. Several times during that period, my old plan was no longer offered and I had to switch to a new plan if I wanted a new phone (at the subsidized price).

I guess you could buy phones from 3rd party sources and not need to sign a new contract. Sounds like you could still do this with Verizon's unlimited data.

And most of the time the plan seemed to add more value to it. I know I started with a regional plan for the Midwest, then when I upgraded I paid a little more for the America's choice plan. I think the next time they added more to the plan they added additional minutes or something a little extra, so again it appeared you were getting more. This is the first time that I have felt you are getting less out of a plan, data or voice. I hated paying for the texting, since that has to be the biggest rippoff in the world, but I know what I'm paying for and agree to add on the $10 to have it. I read one article that basically said the market is saturated and new subscriptions have platuea'd so they are trying to find new ways to bill current customers.
