Development actually approached Eli Broad about funding for a new Music Building and/or University Museum. He told them he'd only give for an Art Museum.

To transfer them anywhere (I once suggested Chittenden Hall which has been empty since 1999) would cost about 7M last I saw. The Library is a unique academic department in that it doesn't produce alumni. Therefor raising that kind of money is incredibly difficult because the Library's administration has to yield to other department's administration in terms of development.

A few years ago, the SOM contacted MSU about taking over the Library of Michigan. MSU responded A. We're not a public library so we couldn't hold anything you need to keep available for public viewing (i.e. Genealogy stuff) . B. We don't have the space, unless you pay to move Special Collections. C. As cool as the Library/Archives Building is, we can't afford to purchase the whole thing...you'd have to sell it to us cheap. The State balked. MSU does administer their catalog.
