Veterinarians of tRCMB - puppy -v benadryl question (RIP Reggie)

  • My wife and kids (well, and myself also) found this puppy in the middle of the road on the way home from church Sunday. Wife put him in the van, we took him to the doc on Monday, and are in the middle of nursing him back to health.

    The vet mentioned giving him Benadryl to help ease the discomfort from the mange, etc. This morning my wife proved once again that she is not real bright (first proof was that she married ME) and gave this little 9lb dog a full benadryl.

    Now she wants to know. . . . . will this have any lasting negative impact on the dog?

    The dog is in rough shape, and today just seemed like a down day from where we were at.

    I told her the easy way to check to see if he is ok, is to see if he is breathing in the morning. If he is, then he is ok. If he is not, then he is not ok.

    Anyways. I think the dog will be fine. He went outside tonight and walked a little, but mostly just lays down and doesnt want to be touched.

    Pics of dog, but none of wife and kids.

    Nice of you to care for the puppy.

  • take the puppy, lay the points

    Go Bears, Blackhawks, White Sox, and Pioneers. Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand

  • Should be O.K., but will probably be mighty tired for the next few hours. Now, if the dog ate a whole bottle of Benadryl, then you'd have something to worry about.

    Do you, or the vet, know what kind of dog it is?

  • The daily dose of Benadryl for my 165 lb dog is 27 pills perday (9 x3) 1 for your puppy is probably a non issue, under dozing is usually the bigger problem. My dogs have taken it for years as prescribed by the vet and they do great.

  • My dog was going through some issues that the vet first thought were allergies (later turned out to be mites). The vet explained that dogs have a strong tolerance to Benadryl, and put my 50 lb dog on a double adult human dose.

  • As such I plan to administer every 8 hours using these guidelines:

    * Dogs under 30 lbs = 10 mg
    * Dogs over 30 lbs and less that 50 lbs = 25 mg
    * Dogs over 50 lbs = 50 mg

    First, thanks to all of you for the advice, and kind words.

    The vet didnt have any clue what kind of dog this is. She told us he is probably about 4mo old. And after some healing occurs, there will be a better chance to figure out the breed. We are guessing there is some sort of pointer mutt involved because he has set up with a perfect point twice.

    The last 12 hours have not been good on him. He is just laying there, not wanting to get up. He drinks, and whines. He tried to eat, but all he could do is whine. He is currently curled up with lilMrsGB and she is trying to get him to go outside. He is worse than he was the first couple days. The vet told us that he would have a rough couple weeks, and Im certain that this is part of the process, but I hope he comes around soon, because it is not looking good for lil Reggie this morning.

    Thanks again everyone!

    yeah, I try my hardest to fight off that rep.

    I went to lunch last week with a girl that used to play basketball for me. All I could do was look at her tits. But she is 18 now, so even THAT doesnt make me a bad guy. crap. Just cant get out of my own way sometimes.

    OK, so here is how it all went down, kinda funny in a way:

    We were headed home from Church on Sunday. My 15 year old (lilMrsGatorBill) was driving. We came over a hill and around a curve, and she slammed on the brakes. There was this dog standing in the middle of the road.

    The girls, (MrsGB, lilGB, lilMrsGB) all turned to me and said. "DADDDDDYYYYYYYYYYYYYY" and fwoooomph, MrsGB was out the door, trying to get to the dog. The dog never even moved, but he was so nasty, dirty, that it was hard to get a handle on him without hurting him.

    She yelled to lilMrsGB to pop the hatch on the van (NOT MY VAN, it belongs to MrsGB). She put the dog in and ran around and jumped back in the van. And then. . . . THE SMELL HIT!!! holy freaking cow that dog stunk!!

    Got the dog home, cleaned it up, and it looked worse than it did standing in the road. Took it to the Vet Monday morning, and the vet asked if we were keeping it, or just trying to save it. If we were just trying to save it, I think she would have put it down.

    Anyways, lilGB promised that if we kept it, she would pay the vet bills. . . sigh. . . . $250 just the first day. And we will need to take him back next week for more shots, and then eventually he has to get his nads fished out and taken off.

    He was looking pretty good Monday and Tuesday nights. lilMrsGB sleeps on the floor next to him. And he is very attentive when she is around. But last night, and this morning, he just doesnt look so good anymore. We are hoping it is just part of the rough road that the vet warned us about.

    OH, and his name: At church on Sunday we were all given a name and an envelope in our little instruction booklet thingy as we walked in. During service we wrote letters to the Soldier whose name was on the envelope, and they would be sent to Afganistan monday morning. The names were given to us by a member of the church, they were all people who are not getting mail, or whose spirits are down a little more than others. SOOOOO. . . the fella on my envelope is named Reggie. I had a friend in Elementary school named Reggie, so I thought it was kinda cool. And that is where his name came from.
