WAY OT. First person war/shooter games for a ten year old.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault for PC. It's old enough that it'll run on whatever you have, it isn't overly bloody, and it puts the combat in a meaningful historical context. The Battle of Normandy level in that game is one of the best of all time. Killing Nazis is also much easier to deal with from a moral standpoint than games set in Vietnam or the Middle East.

That game is probably older than this guy's kid. And he's trying to let his son get the cool games that everyone's playing, not decade-old PC exclusives.

  • Another vote for Halo. It's just killing aliens and while the graphics are good they arent trying for realism. And if he's gonna go online the crowed is slightly less crazy than the CoD one.

  • All of this has been very, very helpful. Thank you.

I think I am going to let him make the call between Modern Warfare and Halo. Sounds like Halo might be the best, but will have to see what his friends are playing most.

    Thanks!!!

p.s. I love this board. So much win in a wide variety of areas.

  • I'd go with HALO.
I don't know why you'd be against zombies. If you're really hesitant about him playing these games, take him out at like 10pm and get him left for dead or some other survival/horror shooter. Then make him play it in the dark when he gets home.

That decade-old PC exclusive is widely considered to be the best WWII shooter of all time, and it's much more appropriate for a 10 year-old kid than MW3. If he wants something new, go with Halo like a million other people said. I was just trying to put some other options on the table that he might not be familiar with. If the goal is for him to sit around the TV and play with his friends, I'd still go with one of the older COD games for 360 or PS3. They're a little less edgy than the newer ones, and if it was my kid I'd rather expose him to the current wars in the Middle East in a fact-based and informative context than through a video game.

Isn't Modern Warfare one of the COD games? Personally, I would avoid FPS where you kill realistic looking people for a 10-year-old and stick with something that is more of a fantasy / alien / monster thing.

    Just me. YMMV.

Good point. Get the kid Dead Space. Make him crap his pants and never want to play a shooter again.

  • Another vote for Halo. You shoot stuff but it isn't at all realistic.

There's only one choice for FPS and that's Call Of Duty: MW3 (buy it for the online multi-player so your kid can learn some colorful new language)

Single-player FPS my vote goes for Borderlands.

    THIS!

We'll make him an honorary BRAH and see to it that he is only exposed to the most wholesome of hijinks.

  • Call of Duty/Modern Warfare seems too realistic for a 10 year old. I have MW3 and there's even a couple times i think to myself "wow...I just put a throwing knife in that guys kidney. Gross."

Halo is very much more "space"-like, so it's definitely the way to go. Still lots of explosions, bullets, and violence that kids adore, but it's kind of like you're slaughtering animals, so it's ok.

  • Im with the Halo crowd. Haven't played them in a while but they seemed tame by comparison. I tend to avoid the human vs. human 1st person shooters, going with more of the fantasy type (Unreal back in the day, Halo, Half-Life, Left4Dead...)

I was about to say that. That game creeps me out still if I play at night with the lights out.

Judging by the voices of the kids talking shit after they kill me I assume all the online gamers are 10 & under, btw.

It is a tough situation. All of his friends (East Lansing School System) have the games and play the games. The peer pressure these kids are dealing with these days is out of control. We would normally hold firm on these things, but are trying to meet him in the middle. It has become a bullying vs. gaming thing. Crazy, I know.

Not ideal, but we trust him enough to go forward.

Get him a weight bench instead and make him work out after school every day. I guarantee those brats won't be bullying him over anything next year.

Skyrim would be a good option - it's all fantasy based, not overly violent etc. The fighting is somewhat secondary to other aspects of the game.

I think if he started playing Skyrim, it would be counter-productive towards the anti-bullying goal.

RIP vbulletin. Bring back Rich Rod!

  • It's a little older, but I'd go with Team Fortress 2 (free!) to start. Able to kiddiefy it and remove blood/gibs.

    Play

    Meet the Demoman

Meet the Demoman, one of nine playable character classes in Team Fortress 2. Name: Demoman Role: Defense Weapons: Grenade Launcher / Sticky Bombs / Bottle A fierce temper, a fascination with all things explosive, and a terrible plan to kill the Loch Ness Monster cost the six year old Demoman his original set of adoptive parents. Later, back at the Crypt Grammar School for Orphans near Ullapool in the Scottish Highlands, the boy's bomb-making skills improved dramatically. His disposition and total number of intact eyeballs, however, did not.

  • Another Halo vote. My 12yo plays it. Most of his time is live parties with friends. Violence isn't nearly as graphic as say black OP's. Be prepaired for enhancements to his vocabulary.
