WSJ takes some shots at uw football

  • "Away game: A game played on another school's campus. These games are harder to win than home games.

This, of course, is obvious. The hardship of true away games—not quasi-away ones, like, say, playing Northern Illinois in Chicago—has long been known to everyone in college football except Wisconsin, which, until Saturday, was the only one out of 120 major-college teams that had not played a true away game this season. The Badgers' first steps into enemy territory against Michigan State didn't end well, as we'll discuss below. Wisconsin also has not played a road nonconference game against a major-conference opponent (or Notre Dame) since 2005."

"Bucky: Alternate term for the Wisconsin football team. Refers to the school's ubiquitous mascot. See also: Fraud."

and honestly how to you not play an away game against a major-conference opponent in 6 years?

I'm no expert on Wisconsin football, but my understanding is they took advantage of a soft OOC schedule and some solid coaching to generate a winning record year-in, year-out. They also took advantage of the growing number of post-season bowl games - and recruits take notice. Every year Wisky is winning, every year they go to a Bowl.

Seemingly from out of nowhere, the Wisconsin football program is respectable. BUT, the soft OOC schedule never changes. So, while Michigan plays Oregon, and OSU plays Miami Florida, Wisky plays North Dakota State.

    Perhaps we are underrated.

  • I think calling them a fraud is a little harsh, they lost a tough B1G road game but they're still a pretty damn good team.

To try and diminish the accomplishments of Mark Dantonio and the program. If you downgrade the opponent that MSU played and diminish their importance then any positive achievement can be dismissed.

The problem with this attitude is that MSU continually winning makes it more difficult to ignore their elevation in performance.

  • Seems a bit harsh. The BCS punishes anyone with a loss, so a cupcake non-con schedule is in their interests. It doesn't mean they're a fraud. They're a good team. We're a good team. Losing on the road with 0:00 on the clock doesn't mean they suck. If our offense had it together and put them away when they were on their heels, then that would be a different story. But they pulled it together, got stops, and came back.

Some Spartans fans took offense at the remark that the stars had to align. You don't get a blocked punt, a safety, a blocked field goal, and the most amazing Hail Mary ever, without the stars aligning.

Except for running through the B1G schedule alone cannot be counted on to get you into the BCS Championship game. I'm not saying they need to schedule Alabama & Oklahoma every year, but good lord, not a single non-con road game against a BCS opponent in 6 years? It seems to me like they could at least stand to schedule some 1-for-1 series with upper/middle of the pack BCS teams like Cal, Texas Tech, WVU, etc.

    Just1Spartan

  • Unfortunately, the voters cream themselves when the read the box score and see that a team puts up 70 or 80 on a cupcake. That's what's wrong with the system. The polls reward momentum: win and you'll keep moving up.

We need it to be more like the NCAA basketball selection committee: viewing the overall body of work, weighing SOS, and not just focusing on how many wins a team gets against cupcakes.

They're a pussy team, that takes advantage of a cupcake OOC schedule. One reason they do well in BT play, that can't be overstated, is because they come in relatively intact physically as well as with a pristine record. While other teams are getting dinged up playing teams their own size, Wisconsin has the 2nd & 3rd team in against Southeastern Western Middle Tennessee Polytech.lol

To me winning a NC that way is just wrong. If you want to say you're the best, you can't hide from all the best teams to do it. That's why I think is was a sad day when MSU started playing lower division teams a few years ago. Until then MSU could say they were one of a handful of teams who only played teams at their own level. It was a pussy move to change that.

If by stars aligning you mean good players playing well then you're absolutely correct.

Go look at the replay on tha blocked punt. the 3 protectors of the punter were 1. overwhelmed by our attack and #65 or #61 on the right edge doesn't even move his feet on the block allowing Ellsworth to run right around him. That's not luck, that's a guy who's maybe not that great vs. someone who wants it more and is willing to go totally balls out to get it.

There were several other plays where the same could be said.

The hail mary is text book stupidity and or poor coaching. #4 went for the pick. In that situation every movement you make with your arms should be batting the ball downward. If BJ isn't totally taken off gaurd by the ball getting through there's no need to even have a review and its no big deal its a bomb to the endzone that slip through the defenders hands caught by one of the top 3 WRs in the league. the fact that Keith was in position to play is a matter of how the play is drawn up and executed. The catch is awareness and good hands. Getting in was sheer tenacity and determination. All of that is coaching, talent and wanting it more.

That's what I was going to say. If we end the year 8-4, yes, we were a fraud, but losing that game on Saturday didn't exactly make UW a fraud.

Also, regarding the "true" road game stat...that actually doesn't surprise me. Many BCS schools don't go on the road in the non-conf portion of the schedule, and the fact that we had our first two conference games at homes with a bye week in the middle weeded out the rest...as most teams have a road game in the first three weeks of the conf schedule. And all that means is that we get the gift of playing 4 of our last 6 away from home.

What are your thoughts on not playing a single BCS team on the road in the non-con in the last 6 years? Do you want to see that same scheduling philosophy continue or would you like to see a little more meat on the bones with some home-and-homes scheduled with teams like Arizona State, Missouri, UNC, etc?

I feel like a team (especially one not in the Big12 or SEC these days) needs at least one game like that in their non-con to help boost them up into the BCS Championship.

I agree. Oregon St was supposed to be that team recently, but they've shit the bed the last year or two. They were good a few years ago. We also had a home and home with Va Tech scheduled and we backed out, and a home and home with another top half BCS opponent and they backed out...the school escapes me for the moment.

Ideally, I'd like to see our non-con consist of

    - 1 top half BCS opponent
    - 1 "other" BCS opponent
    - 1 winnable road game
    - 1 buy game

I'd love to see a marquee home and home "traditional" matchup...like a ND, but it's not as easy as calling ND and saying "pick a date". We did have a home and home with Oregon a while ago that I would have liked to see continue. Those were fun games.

The last year or two? Oregon State is the worst team in the Pac XII by total wins and by win percentage. Even worse than Wazzu. IF they make a bowl it tends to be the Las Vegas or the Insight bowl. The Insight bowl. Seriously? This is like scheduling Indiana and calling it a major match up.

Any idea why your leadership backed out of the Va Tech agreement? That would have been a great series.

And did you schedule a home & home with Oregon State, or did you just pay them to show up? I'm guessing home & home, as bad as they have been they are still a BCS school.

At Oregon St next year. I need to reacquaint myself with the other "back outs". Don't want to talk out of turn.

Apparently Oregon St was the one who wanted to back out and we pushed the series to this year and next. Va Tech is still going to happen apparently, but this is the one we delayed. I think we wanted to push back from when it was originally scheduled because it was for a year where we opened with OSU and another tough game in the conf schedule.

Yeah, they're terrible this year, no one is denying that. But given that games are schedule 3 or 4 years out in some cases (we've already got two on the schedule for 2014), you can't be certain how good that team will be when the date arrives. Oregon State's finish in the Pac 10 the past few years is as follows:

    2008 3rd
    2009 3rd
    2010 5th

So assuming the matchups were scheduled 2-3 years ago, Oregon St was a solid program at the time it was set up...just like I said.

When they run up the score on cream puffs and win out the Big Ten, they have a pretty good chance of getting into the NC. Maybe they'll end up 3 or 4, but there's also no guarantee a difficult non-con would help unless you beat one of the teams a head of you.

It's just the path of least resistance in a system that requires no loses.
