Watch Recommendations

  • Paging CincySpartan.

On the old board I asked for watch recommendations up to $800, and was immediately flamed for wasting money. CincySpartan was a great source of watch information however.

Post your watches here, or ones you hope to buy. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

  • For under $800.00 Victorinox Swiss army has some great looking, sturdy chronographs. I also really like the more conservative Invicta models on shopnbc.com. You could get a nice Victorinox or Invicta for under 400.00 and they look like they cost far more.

  • This is what I have, citizen eco drive. Recharges its own battery, a lot extra features in the bezel too.

  • Citizen ECO-drive are solid watches. Calibre 8700 is solid.

For $800 I would also consider a Hamilton. Swiss movement for that price range is solid.

It would set you back just a shade over $27,000

  • Do you want a quartz or mechanical watch? Do you want complications or a simple watch. Dress or sporty? On a metal bracelet, leather strap or rubber strap? With a little more info it will be easier to make a recommendation.

  • I also have a citizen eco drive, great watch.

Check out www.chronoshark.com they have a deal a day on watches, some of the deals are unbeleivable, just keep checking it and eventually what you're looking for will pop up.

  • You can get a heluva nice watch for $500 or less. The Swiss Army Summit XLT is a great all-round quartz watch if you get a stainless strap. I have an SA Infantry self-winding that is very accurate at around $500 and wear it every day. A rather expensive GMT Rolex I received as a gift mostly stays in the dresser.

  • Save your money for a few years and invest in an IWC or some other quality timepiece that will retain its value (or increase) over time. The Portugese will never not be classic.

  • Someone already mentioned Chronoshark. Keep an eye on that website and you'll find a good deal eventually.

I have 2 watches that I have had for over 10 years, both look great and work great still.

Tissot (Swiss quality, price range is anywhere from $200 to $2k)

    Certina
(can't seem to find many US retailers for this one. I bought it in Norway 12 years ago)

Most high end watches are not good investments. As a matter of fact a new IWC Mark XVI, one of their entry level pieces lists for $3500.00 and used for closer to $2K. Even with a substantial discount it's a loser. Rolex, Cartier and a few other brands do better. Used Portuguese's are no better.

I do however agree with saving to buy a quality mechanical watch. Also, buying used can save a lot of money over retail.

Interestingly enough..... My first big watch purchase was a Rolex Explorer II, black face. I bought it directly from Switzerland through an off-line "retailer". Found a guys name on a watch forum and contacted him directly.

It was a risk, but he was willing to do the deal through escrow so I had a chance to verify it was real when I received, prior to releasing the funds.

I bought the watch for $2400 in 2001, about $900 below retail at that point, and of course exchange rates were favorable then too.

I sold it through Ebay about 2 years ago for ~$2700. Exchange rates had risen to the point that the 2001 retail price was ~$3300 and the retails price 2 years ago was ~$4400.

That helped to significantly bridge the gap in terms of resale........

bottom line, exchange rates can help significantly....

The Orange Monster is one of the coolest watches around and a great value. I've had 3-4 over the years and one is currently in my collection. Prices have climbed on this piece in the last year but they can be found used in your price range.
