What are your thoughts on job title "Managing Director" ?

I have been going back and forth on a job and related title. They are viewing "Managing Director" as a very high level position. I am pushing for the V.P. title (and related beni's). They actually have "Executive Director" below "Managing Director".
I get that the "Managing" classification puts you in a potential staff oversight role (ie Managing Partner), but the word still has a negative connotation for me.
Am I missing something here? What does that title mean to you?

At my company, the "Managing Directors" oversee certain areas of our business, and make just below what the "Principals" or "Partners" make. It's a good job title to have around here...

They're trying to screw you by sticking you with a title that gives them the long-term advantage. Hold out for VP or nothing. They will crack eventually.

What industry are you in?
In financial services/banking, Managing Director is several rungs (and numerous pay grades) above VP.

I work in advertising and the woman who runs our office and is the head of account services has the title of Managing Director (yes, a woman oversees our office...bizarro world), but my title has VP in it and she's my boss. So it varies according to role and industry.
Bruco also has VP in his title, but is not a true VP in the standard sense of the term.

Depends on context & industry. In the "normal" corporate world (not legal, banking, consulting, or finance) I've seen it generally go like this:
President/CEO > V.P./CIO/COO/etc. > Director > Senior Manager > Manager > Asst. Manager > Grunt
I've generally seen the subdivision among V.P.s like this:
Exec./Senior V.P. > V.P. > A.V.P.
Now "director", as in one of the board of directors responsible for overseeing company management, is entirely different and I assume not what the OP is referring to.

Amazingly, the vast majority of posts in this thread are spot on. Like everyone else said, it depends on the industry. In banking/finance/professional services - MD is generally a very lofty title.

To me it's one of those titles like general manager. Doesnt sound that impressive but actually carries a lot of responsibility. In my experience US companies use general manager & european ones use managing director.

Right. I suspect that someone up for seat on a Board of Directors would not be asking the RCMB for opinions about his title.
On the other hand, corporate America would be a better place if people on the Boards of Directors whiled away their days on the RCMB.

As previously stated, Managing Director is a prominent title within finance. It's also prominent within the airline industry (and considered executive management).

In financial services, PMD is the only title higher than MD. Even the CEOs are PMDs, I believe. The VP title is broadly used, and has at least 4 tiers.

We have a new spelling Nazi I see. Sorry, it is "drudges", not "dredges". My fat fingers don't work well with a mobile keyboard. I don't think I'm alone in that respect. I hope you'd think I'm smart enough to know we aren't some sort of boat. The whole idea of the discussion is that a managing director is a position of prominence where those of us that that post 24/7 talking about craft beer and gelvin torberg probably don't have such a position.
