What do you give to MSU?

  • I was reading where Mary Sue Coleman said scUM wouldn't dip into their endowment to make up for lost state aid... which got me thinking about MSU's endowment - and then gifts to the university in general. Seeing that many here are well-heeled Spartans - let's all lay down our cards and show how well we support MSU financially. Don't count "buying tickets" to fb/bb, Spartan Fund (so you can get good parking), and don't count tuition or your overdue student loans. I mean just the gifts you've made or pledged to the university

I'll go first. Last year I gave $250. I just changed jobs, and now work for a company that matches gifts - so my goal is to give $500 this year and have the company kick in another $500. I usually pick the Essential Edge Fund. I don't know the lifetime total I've given - but its probably around $2500 by the end of 2010.

(I would expect Grim Reaper to set the standard, but I'm betting there are a lot of generous Spartans here!)

  • Not meaning to hijack but I was getting 3 or4 calls a week for donations late in the football season. So far none during hoops.

    Anybody else notice this?

  • I gave $1200 dollars by dropping a class a week after the refund deadline because I was so sick I was hallucinating and it completely slipped my mind. blank

  • ...I think that falls under the "tuition exclusion"... but I'm sure the professor thanks your anyway... probably for more than just the money.

  • I gave MSU 10 years of my life - does that count?

  • Over 180 views in an hour - and yet no donors? Come on people... that stadium isn't going to brick itself.

Jim, maybe donate your body (minus your liver) to one of the medical colleges.

  • It's really none of your damn business

  • I'm currently a student, so they're getting my tuition. After I graduate, I'm not planning on giving them anything. I know the tuition increases aren't entirely the fault of the university, since they obviously can't have complete control on their own funding, but I do give them a chunk of blame for that, and I figure they have enough money as it is. If I'm gonna give away money, I'm gonna give it to a charity that helps people in a much more concrete way.

  • The new RCMB is a small sample and judging from some of the overall quality of threads/posts, hopefully, not a good cross section of the "Spartan Nation". But whether we like it or not, the U can't exist without donations over and above the legislative allotments and bond issues. If you don't like the amount the MI legislature allots to MSU, vote in a different legislature. Otherwise, without help from private funds, your degree will become less valuable in the future. Alumni giving is one of the criteria that US News and World Report uses to judge the quality of education of colleges. And we are last in the Big 10 in that regard. It's sad to see the attitude of so many MSU alumni that think that they paid their $ to MSU, received a "product" in return and that's the end of it. Evidently MSU mgt has done a poor job of selling us on the future value of our degrees in comparison to other schools. Or maybe the value of our degrees and consequently the jobs we can get using our MSU bought education is already so poor in comparison to our competition that our alumni make so little there is no $ left over after bare living expenses are taken from our budgets. cry

  • I'm not happy with some of the things I saw while I was there. I guess in a few more years time after some key leadership changes I will have to give the benefit of the doubt and pony up. I'm not whining about crap like police or rising tuition either, I mean mistakes and decisions that would negatively impact the perception and value of my degree both now and in the years to come.

  • I hope MSU enjoyed that unnecessary parking ticket I got at the end of law school where I parked in an empty lot, paid the meter, and somehow it broke and was flashing when I got back from my final. Even tried to appeal it. MSU shouldn't treat its lawyer/doctor graduating couples like that.

Obviously your law degree is worth zero - it can't even knock down a parking ticket. But the spouse's MD or DO degree - is worth plenty. I believe the DO school is ranked top 10 for all medical colleges (#1 DO school), while the MD school is in the top 20.

But they are your degrees - and your money.

So far the results of this thread have been surprising to me. People here are always calling "Walmart" to the scUM fans - and saying we're all true Spartans because we went there. If there are so many Alums here - where are the ones that provide some financial support to the university?

  • I donate to a couple of the MSU student organizations. I always figure they need the money more than, say the athletic department or some other bigger thing on campus.

Plus the whole MSU Dubai situation really rubbed me the wrong way, and I don't really want to donate to the general university fund because they royally screwed that up.

Why would anyone tell a stranger what they donate to the university? To brag?

I mentioned mine just because I really do think the registered student organizations need help. They get very little funding from anywhere, and I was glad to be a part of a couple of them while I was at State.

That's fine, i was asking the OP. He seems shocked that nobody's answering his question, when it's really none of his business whether people here donate or not.

Seriously - you aren't that dumb are you? A scUM grad?

People here talk about things WAY more personal and private than money! Its not like everyone here "knows" who everyone else is.

Besides - I gave $250 last year. Most people are burning that up on their phone plan in 6 months or less - so I'm hardly bragging.

I distinctly recall threads about "how much do you make" (and variants about bonus $, and other perks). So - its not like tRCMB is loaded with people that have a problem discussing how much comes in. They also don't seem to have any problem talking about how much goes out - or where it goes. Every gadget they buy (usually with price noted - see any thread on TVs, computers, cameras), vacation, and on and on it goes. All for the world to see.

I'm sure you give a nice chunk to scUM - so you can feel comfortable knowing I won't ask.

  • I am only a few years removed from MSU. Wife and I still have over 15k in student loans to pay off.

Once those are paid, we want to buy lifetime memberships in the alumni foundation ($900+).

After all that is taken care, I would like to start giving something every year.

Its not that we are "cheap asses" or "don't care about the university", its simply that we are under 28 years old, gas is 3.50 a gallon, and the job market blows. Whatever extra income we had left over is now going into my 15 year old p.o.s car's gas tank.
