  • I think Citizen Kane, analyzed technically, in terms of narrative, camera movement, lighting, each actor's delivery, all of that, is probably the best.

But I've seen it several times, and it just didn't move me. I felt no emotional connection, not with Kane, nor his victims.

It did inform me when I eventually toured Hearst Castle, which I urge anyone who cruises along Big Sur to do.

Well I know most people love Goodfellas, and I thought it was average at best. Not even in my top 100 movies. The Departed is in my top 10 for sure.

I would rate Step Up 2: To the Streets ahead of a lot of those movies.

Same with me. Technically it's amazing, especially for its time. But does anyone really sit back and enjoy watching Citzen Kane?

I think a lot of people like to say Citzen Kane or the Godfather is the best because it goes along with the general consensus. I'm not bashing at all, because they are indeed great movies, and I own the Godfather trilogy. But I'm willing to bet all but the snobbiest of movie buffs would rather watch "Point Break" than "Citizen Kane."lol

I think the best films strike a great balance between technical brilliance and entertainment/rewatchability. If that's a word.

I don't know what it is, but when I watch older movies that people recommend, I usually come away feeling like I have wasted my time. That's why I still haven't seen any of the Godfathers. Based what I thought of Goodfellas and the fact that they are 3 hours long, I can't bring myself to watch them. I'm fairly confident I would think they were simply average. Doesn't seem like my cup of tea.

Well you're basing that off of the fact that I didn't like Goodfellas and like The Departed. Most people agree with my taste in movies. Shawshank, A Few Good Men, Good Will Hunting, Pulp Fiction, Sleepers are a few of my favorites that come to mind.

    Recent choices:

Best movie this year: Social Network

Best movie the year before: Up in the Air

(Hurt Locker was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I will give it credit for the camera work, sound, etc, but I had absolutely no interest in the story)

  • I feel pretty similar to Ringer. I don't feel a big desire to watch to old classic movies, but thats probably because I am younger. I loved the Departed and Gangs of New York, and haven't seen the others that you mentioned.

In no way can I choose a singular champ, but if I were to give a top 5/10 or so it would include :

    Shawshank Redemption
    Pulp Fiction
    The Departed
    Gangs of New York
    Good Will Hunting
    LA Confidential

Just Outside : Forrest Gump and Braveheart.
I still have plenty to see, but those are my semi-contemporary picks that I can think of right now.

    Apocalypse Now

This is my choice. As much as I love The Godfather I/II, Citizen Kane, Seven Samurai, Tokyo Story, 8 1/2, Raging Bull, 2001, etc., Apocalypse Now is the most surreal film experience there is.

Lots of great movies, but I think the greatest movie of all time has got to be Gone With the Wind. I still prefer The Godfather (personally), while respecting Citizen Kane.
