What to do in SoCal?

  • So my dad got a new job in Newport Beach, California and my parents have been living there since this summer. My brother and I are visiting for the first time. We'll be here from now until January 6th. Anything we should go see or do in this area, what say you tRCMB?

  • I'm not from there but have visited. My two cents: leave.

Go to the Rose Parade. Seriously.

    Eat lots of good food.

Walk the beach. All of it.

They've had a ton of snow in the mountains. Ski.

  • Really? What to do in Southern California? Where should I start?

Newport Beach is south of LA and a great area. You are right on the ocean so there's always the beach. There's great but expensive golf in the area. Also, Torrey Pines and La Jolla are south towards San Diego. If you like amusement parks, Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland are not too far away. Catalina Island is a good destination. If you don't mind a bit of a drive in bad traffic on I-5 head up to Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Great shopping if you're into that and great food. The Promenade in Santa Monica is a cool place to hang out.

If Venice Spartan sees this he can add much more.

SkyBar in Hollywood - it's too late to go for New Year's Eve but Friday or Sunday night would still be a blast.

Backup is The Viceroy Hotel in Santa Monica - think Vince and the boys in Entourage.

First time in Cali, just wondering what others have had fun doing, but I know the beaches are awesome here, we'll be visiting lots of different ones for sure, and possibly some surfing lessons thrown in the mix.

Yeah we've heard great things about Catalina island; we were recommended to go zip lining there. It's on our to do list, we'll see.

    Thanks for the input thumbsup

We'll definitely consider the Rose Parade then. We definitely would have gone to both the game and parade if the Spartan's would have gone. Don't want to punch a poor vadger fan if we go now.

Skip the Rose Parade IMO. You would have to drive all the way up to Pasadena and it's not worth it and it is a touristy move.

If you are in Newport there are lots of great bars if that is what you are into. Any bars on Balboa Peninsula would be great.

Check out The Alley it is a great restaurant. Avila's El Ranchito is great Mexican food.

    Other places to consider:

Mutt Lynch's, Blackies, Shamrock Pub, Rudy's, Malarky's, The Village Inn, Blue Beat. You can go to Sharkeez which is where everyone goes. I don't know if it has changed, but there are lots of hot chicks there and lots of d-bags as well.

I say just walk around Balboa, there is lots to do. You will most likely see one of those places I listed above while you are walking around. Or take the drive down to Laguna Beach. It is a small art community and there are lots of great places to eat down there as well.

If you want to take surfing lesson, I suggest you make the short drive up to Huntington Beach or south towards Dana Point/Doheny. A word of warning the water is going to be frigid cold and you will not last 30 min without a wetsuit.

Skip the Rose Parade...you can do that when your hair turns blue. That's only for old fucks. Find some bars in the area and go get laid. Hang out with college age folks in the area. You'll enjoy your time...thumbsup

  • South Coast Plaza has higher total receipts than the City of Beverly Hills - If you're into shopping - almost every high end retailer on Earth is there as well as the usual suspects - Fashion Island is not far behind. I far prefer Laguna Beach to Newport - shopping, restaurants and even the beaches are better and only five miles down the coast. Actually Laguna has almost a monopoly on charm in Orange County - there is just something plastic about Newport - it's just too all-about-money-with-no-apologies. And I lived and worked there for many years.

  • Don't try and surf now. Water will be too cold for you.

Find a bar with a patio and some barely legals.

  • You should watch the game at Rudy's in Newport. You'll need to get there about 8:30 am. They should be banging the cowbell by 9. Recently changed ownership, but it should still be the best place for the game. they might still give you a 10% discount if you have a MSU alumni card. It will be low 80s at the beach that day so the girls may be in summer clothing which is a plus. Be prepared for a long day. Ride the Balboa Ferry (Drive your car on it). For a Michigander it will feel like you are driving on water the first time you do it. Get to the Blue Beat for sunset on the roof. Go to Billy's on the Beach Friday Happy Hour which is actually on coast highway and request a Mount Gay Mai Tai. Don't order more than 2 though or you'll be sorry in the morning. Proceed to Malarky's and then Sharkees for the Sorority girls. There are usually some first class escort types at Billy's too if you have an extra $500. El Ranchito is best on Tuesday for Taco Tuesday and the beer/margarita/girl specials.
