didn't the Head Emperor or the Grand Archduke or whatever they call themselves, set up shop in Howell, MI back in the day? Or is that an urban (suburban) legend?

Pretty sure he was only the head of the Michigan Chapter and it was in neighboring cohoctah but whose counting...

I find it to be the sweet spot between the high stress, get out of my way before I stab you in the face with this broken bottle attitude of the east coast with the molasses slow, hope you're not in any sort of hurry at all attitude of the south.

that's one thing I hate about the south. i'm always trying to get from point a to point b in a hurry and everyone wants to slow me down. take the gas station for example. I go in for a diet sundrop and I have to wait 5 minutes while billy bob talks about his trailer with barbara who works at the gas station.

This red state/blue state, midwest vs. coasts, the south vs. everyone stuff is absolute bullshit. There is only city, suburbs, and country.

Go into the city center of any major American city, head for an up and coming neighborhood, get really drunk, and I defy you to walk out of the bar and tell me exactly where you are. All American cities are essentially the same.

Similarly, drive 30 miles outside of any major American city and you are in "the midwest." Doesn't matter where the city is; it's the midwest.

Sounds like a man that hasn't traveled. Rural Grand Ledge is the same as rural New Mexico? Downtown Grand Rapids is the same as downtown Brooklyn? Drove to Key West for spring break once, couldn't wait to enter Ohio on the way home, actually felt kind of like home.

  • I was born and raised in the Midwest but now live in Scottsdale. Wouldnt change it for the world.

Most Midwesterners are super friendly (unless of course they are from Chicago then they are total dickwads)

  • I like it.

We call it "Pop" and "creek" (not crick)

We enjoy all 4 sports up here, not just football. Football is still # 1 though.

I also enjoy having all 4 seasons too. Too bad we haven't had a winter this year.

Actually, you couldn't be more wrong. I've done 50,000 miles a year for the past five years.

I live in DC now...but went to Richmond for a weekend over the summer. Richmond reminded me somewhat of Detroit, on a much smaller scale (down to the hipsters even). BUT wow, were people openly racist. I was shocked...that was my first "southern" experience.

Haven't run in to you in awhile..

  • Pros:
    4 distinct seasons.
    Less open racism.

    Michigan specific:
    East Lansing
4 major professional sport teams with no in-state rivalries (e.g. Yankees/Mets)
    Great variance in weather.
    AMAZING camping.
And the best part is the Great Lakes. I freaking love Lake Michigan.

    Cons:
One of the seasons is Winter.
    Indiana.

    Michigan specific:
Sometime TOO great of a variance in weather. It was sunny and 45 about an hour ago. 5 minutes ago, I couldn't see 100 feet outside because of snow.
    Ann Arbor
Not intended for Wells, but the West Michigan style of conservativeness. Anyone else from W. Michigan can understand what I'm talking about.

  • From a relatively small but widespread sample, I've noticed that Southern girls are way more into using "pulling out" as a form of contraceptive, even if it's a random hookup.

well, my Grandparents' farm had a "crick" running through it and they lived in Chesaning, MI. But they also had a davenport in the living room.

I can't even tell you how many times growing up I was scolded for horseplay on the davenport at my grandma's up north in beulah.

    Counterpoints:

Ann Arbor is actually a great place.
It's possible to avoid the Bible Thumper Conservatives if you travel to a few areas of W. Michigan. Blonde girls are fucking awesome as well.

    It's a very compelling argument.

Reseda has the same feel as Livonia has the same feel as Olive Branch, Mississippi. You live in your car and drive through strip malls; the only difference is the climate.

Similarly, North Portland is the same as Logan Square, Chicago is the same as Williamsburg. You work close to home, take public transportation, and everyone is under 40 years old and grew up attending postpunk shows.

The country is the country; always has been.

I'm not sure what you are looking at, but I'm guessing it's pretty superficial.

Ann Arbor contains the big house.
I agree with you on that one.

I'm not "From" the midwest....but I've lived here for 8 years.

The people are kickass! That's why I've hung around so long.

I love the people of the midwest.

The people here in California, particularly Los Angeles and Bay Area folks, are big dooshers. If we replaced the people in California with the people from the midwest, this state would be the best state in the history of the world.

I think being in California too long turns people into dooshers. You get a sense of entitlement for living in such a privileged State.
