What's it like being from the midwest?

  • numberonealcove said...

    It's a very compelling argument.

Reseda has the same feel as Livonia has the same feel as Olive Branch, Mississippi. You live in your car and drive through strip malls; the only difference is the climate.

Similarly, North Portland is the same as Logan Square, Chicago is the same as Williamsburg. You work close to home, take public transportation, and everyone is under 40 years old and grew up attending postpunk shows.

The country is the country; always has been.

I'm not sure what you are looking at, but I'm guessing it's pretty superficial.

I was referring to the people that inhabit the country not what you see out your window when you drive through town. Yes main street USA looks the same and the day to day activities of similar aged people with work, kids and friends are the same. Next time you drive through rural Kentucky, New Mexico or Northern Florida i'd be curious if you think, "this feels just like home"

The people in Cali are great!

Yeah, I agree here. Midwest people are great, but they still fall victim to the whole, "My life is slowing down, better get married and settle down" thing around the age of 24-26. California people simply aren't like that.

    Counterpoints:

Ann Arbor is actually a great place. It's possible to avoid the Bible Thumper Conservatives if you travel to a few areas of W. Michigan. Blonde girls are fucking awesome as well.

Yes the blonde ratio is quite high in W. Michigan. It was fun growing up.

I love the people of the midwest.

The people here in California, particularly Los Angeles and Bay Area folks, are big dooshers. If we replaced the people in California with the people from the midwest, this state would be the best state in the history of the world.

I just got back from the Bay Area... Mixture between good and gaudy. I hit on some girls in SF who were obsessed with saying they went to Stanford. I pissed them off by saying "that's nice but my major supply chain management, is number one in the country" to which they responded, "yea but I went to Stanford".

I wasn't there long enough to properly judge but I would say many were full of themselves and Napa is douche bag central or the Bay Area.

There is only city, suburbs, and country.

I grew up in Traverse City, MI and while it certainly has aspects of all three of these types of areas, I don't think it could possibly be categorized into any one of them. Sure, Northern Michigan as a whole is pretty country... but Traverse City? Not so much. I guess it's the largest city in Northern Michigan, but is it really a "city"? Not by the standards of Chicago, Detroit, etc. Suburb? Well I guess life there can be kind of suburban, but it's not really a suburb of anything.

I like to think of it as a tourist town, if anything. Definitely different than life in any traditional suburb, city, or country setting.

Pros: 4 distinct seasons. Less open racism.

Michigan specific: East Lansing 4 major professional sport teams with no in-state rivalries (e.g. Yankees/Mets) Great variance in weather. AMAZING camping. And the best part is the Great Lakes. I freaking love Lake Michigan.

Cons: One of the seasons is Winter. Indiana.

Michigan specific: Sometime TOO great of a variance in weather. It was sunny and 45 about an hour ago. 5 minutes ago, I couldn't see 100 feet outside because of snow. Ann Arbor Not intended for Wells, but the West Michigan style of conservativeness. Anyone else from W. Michigan can understand what I'm talking about.

I like West Michigan in spite of the conservatives.
    Had lunch at Founders today.
Snow! It's one of the seasons. Love them all.

  • Some of the nicest people in the country, and some of the most laid back. I feel like people in the south are very nice, but can be judgemental. Chicago is the most laid back major city I've been in. Most of the others...DC, LA, Dallas, NY, etc. try to keep things too classy or pretentious. I didn't get let into a shitty sports bar in DC because I was wearing shorts and sandals...WTF? In LA they don't even have sports bars. In chicago you can walk into just about any bar in shorts, sandals and a t-shirt and be good to go.

The winters suck my ass, and I actually moved south when i came to chicago.
