What's the best alternative to Netflix?

  • I've had both blockbuster and Netflix and they are the same for DVD by mail. For non mail I I just use on demand and hbo or dvr.

  • I've plowed through the 4-5 TV series I wanted to watch, but never could get around to it before netflix streaming.

    If you want to see some angry comments go to the "reviews" of Dexter on Netflix, with scores of complaints about it not being available on demand any longer.

    Now with those done, the ability to run through back seasons of "Bones" or "CSI" don't seem to make it worth keeping.

  • Used to torrent, now I make backup copies of discs for netflix. :) I'd cancel netflix but a few times a month watching a movie on the phone totally redeems itself.

  • There are some pretty good websites that show you what's streaming on Netflix, and they have fairly accurate ratings. For example, I found out about a movie called "Somewhere" from one of those websites recently. I don't know if it's still streaming, but it's by Sofia Coppola. It's a lot like "Lost in Translation" (also directed and written by her). Another good Netflix movie is "Let the Right One In." It's an unconventional vampire movie from Sweden.

  • Where Netflix fails is customer service. For instance, I've had a DVD out for 3 months straight and not a single email from them saying- "hey, you still alive?"

  • Netflix is good on the web. Amazon Prime is picking up steam but netflix is best.
    We can get any movie that we want online though if we are into the downloading and viewing of them online.

    We've had Netflix for 3 months and love it but you have to set your expectations. We don't expect movies that were released six months ago on Netflix but theres a ton of stuff I'm interested in seeing that I would never pay to rent or simply isn't available unless you buy the DVD. I watched about five movies on Netflix over the weekend. But I understand the frustration because it doesn't seem like Netflix adds a lot of new movies regularly

  • Thinking of finally making the jump to Netflix streaming, mainly to watch TV series I've missed out on and the occasional movie. What's the straight scoop on their inventory? It seems like the HBO and Showtime content is limited or nonexistant. In essence it looks like I'd be paying $8/month mainly to get AMC shows.

    Is their content of decent, critically acclaimed stuff growing, or are the networks restricting their access so they can sell it themselves?

    It's been a bit since I've had it but at the time they had some ABC/NBC content, Discovery, AMC, and Downton Abbey (PBS/BBC?)

    Depends on what you're into.

    No, HBO and Showtime don't stream their stuff through Netflix and no, you won't find most mainstream, American movies streaming there unless they are older. Netflix can't afford to pay what would be necessary to get newer films that the general public wants. DVD and Blu-Ray sales are too important to the films distributors. HBO has their own streaming service for their customers and Showtime is working on one.

    Netflix Streaming caters to cinephiles. They stream a lot of great, newer foreign films and documentaries because that's what they can afford to get the rights to while keeping their customer costs under $10.

    If you don't mind subtitles, there are some great films in their streaming library right now. Headhunters is brilliant and stars the actor who plays Jaime Lannister in GoT. The Yellow Sea is a great Korean thriller for those who dug Oldboy and I Saw The Devil. The Snowtown Murders, Elite Squad, Bullhead, Election, The Man From Nowhere, Margin Call, Gomorrah, Carlos, and A Prophet are some of the best movies I've seen in the past 5 years and all are streaming on Netflix.

    They also stream a lot of good BBC stuff and have started to add TV shows from other countries as well.
