What's the most annoying thing a relative does?

  • Went to a family reunion in Grand Haven on Sunday and my sister's 16-year-old* daughter would not stop singing. It was the same song over and over, too. Nobody asked her to sing, and we all did our best to ignore her, but she would not stop. Would. NOT. Stop.

I had to leave the table more than once for fear that I would say something I couldn't take back.

Anybody else want to complain about the annoying habits of relatives?

*Too young** for pics, you perverts.

**Sorry Colonel Forbin, none for you, either.

  • she would just sing in the middle of a family reunion for no reason, the same song, repetitively? why didn't you ask her to shut up because the grown ups want to talk

  • Most annoying thing one of my family members does? A cousin refuses to root for anyone other than scUM. And guess what....he didn't go there! Incredible, how that works.

  • Most annoying thing my family member does is forwards politically charged chain emails or posts about them on Facebook that make absolutely no sense.

Not singing loud enough for everyone to hear, just those close by.

Her younger brothers asked her (nicely) to stop. Maybe knowing it was annoying them is why she continued. It was definitely an attempt for attention, which is why left on several occasions.

I didn't tell her to shut up because my BIL and I aren't exactly close, and sometimes it's best to keep quiet. I wasn't in the mood to start an argument with him. Family reunions are hard enough as it is.

  • I have a cousin that has had tiger season tickets for about 15 years now. He invites me to go to a game with him every year. Problem is, he has never had a ticket for me. I always have to scalp a ticket, then we watch from the concourse.

He always seems to pick marquee games like the BoSox and the Yankees too, and scalped tix for those games are at a premium.

The year I called him out on this was the last year he invited me. What say you RCMB? Am I in the wrong? I told him that I would pay for the ticket, that's no big deal. I would just like one in hand before I get down to the game, cause I don't want to spend +$50 to walk around the concourse.

    Always Smooth.

You've every right to call him out. I only hope you haven't been doing this for the entire 15 years he's had a ticket. That would be like Lucy talking Charlie Brown into trying to kick the football again with Lucy promising to hold the ball in place. lol

  • Brought a pet to another relatives home for a holiday gathering without asking/warning etc. And acted like it was no problem to just walk right in and camp out in their living room, total disregard to host and the hosts pet.

ding ding. I get the nuts from both parties in my family, always arguing politics and none of them bother to ever verify facts or do any research what so ever.....just endless talking points.....damn this thread just made me depressed.

  • My Grandfather passed away a month or so ago and we are spreading his ashes out on Lake Michigan this summer. My 2 Aunts arranged for the boat ride and weekend activities for everyone. Except there isn't enough spots for everyone and since they set it up my part of the family (parents, brothers) got shut out from the boat ride that we are spreading the ashes and the house that everyone is staying in. Interestingly we were the ones who lived nearby and were with my grandfather all the time. I guess that's life. I'm kind of used to that part of the family kind of swooping in and doing whatever they feel like so I'm not really surprised but it is frustrating.

I've often observed that a death in the family can bring out the absolute best qualities in some and the absolute worst qualities in others... it's a weird dynamic.. sucks, though - sorry that you and your part of the family got slighted..

I agree with this statement 100%

That really sucks, bro. I'm sorry to hear that, and sorry to hear about your grandfather, too.

  • We own a cottage on Lake Michigan and share it with family members. Certain family members see us (our immediate family) as the main caretakers of the place and when they come up to visit, rarely, if ever, bring food for meals, drinks, gas money for boat, etc. They drink beer, margaritas, and wine like elephants at a water hole. We enjoy being nice hosts for everyone, but when people in your family on a regular basis freeload several times a summer it gets real old fast. My wife told me that if it keeps up this summer we are going to do one night when I cook up T-bones for us and some BallPark Turkey Franks for the ones who bring nothing to the table. Should be some nice fireworks around the table that night.

Same thing with my wife and I. We live on a lake and every weekend we always have people coming over to enjoy the boat, quads and other hospitalities. I hit my breaking point a few years ago and informed the primary free loading offenders that they need to call before coming and it would be appreciated if we could take turns supplying stuff for the grill, BYOB, assist with cleaning up, gas for the toys, etc. After honestly talking with the offenders, they understood my position and things have been much improved. The one's who balked are not welcomed back over.

I have no problem hosting invited guests for a few days. That's part of friendship and entertaining. Our friends usually bring a nice bottle of wine or some quality brews for all to share. It's the family members that show up with only their suitcases that are pissing me off. I'm to the point of telling them, "There's a real nice Meijers store about 20 minutes up the road in Ludington...why don't you go check it out?"...
