What's with the seatbelt enforcement zones?

  • MattR644 said...

If you're going 25 mph and someone hits you going the other way going 25 mph you're sure as shit going to wish you were wearing a seatbelt. I just don't understand why anyone would not put one on, allergies to seat belt materials? I personally feel naked without a seatbelt on (plus I rarely wear pants when I drive).

Just a personal choice thing. 95% of my driving takes place in the city going less than 30MPH, and a seatbelt wouldn't do much for any accident.

Not the point. The law's the law.

  • Anybody remember how they sold the seatbelt laws when they first put them in?

Oh, it's just a safety thing - we'd never stop anybody for not wearing one. It will be a secondary violation. It's only for the front seat.

But like all Government programs it grew - now they're running roadblocks and racking up major money.

Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?

And you've never smoked pot, driven a motorcycle without a helmet, driven after a few beers or exceeded the speed limit?

Holiday weekend coming up. Increased traffic means more traffic fatalities. They are just trying to save lives.

So why let motorcycle riders have an option of not wearing helmets? Hypocrites...

It's been clear that it's about the money for a while and the repeal of the motorcycle helmet law kills any safety argument.

can someone tell me what these look like? does everyone have to pull of th side of the road or is there just an assload of cops on the side of the road watching for people?

There is usually a spotter that with radio. Standing on the side of the road, there are also signs warning drivers. The spotter radios 1 or 2 patrol cars if someone without a belt comes tooling by. Patrol cars pull the driver over and ticket them.

    LoneWolfSparty

  • Saw one of these set-up on Alpine in GR on Monday. 1 cop standing on the side of the road checking cars driving by, and 1/2 mile down the road were 3 or 4 cruisers waiting to pull over the cars identified by the spotter.

Here is a list of locations by county of where these enforcment zones will be set-up. (Except for Kent County which fails to list actual locations, instead putting "county wide" or "city wide" as the location.)

There is a "Seatbelt Enforcement Zone" sign, and a cop standing there with a walkie talkie. Then there are a shitload of cop cars like 100 yards further down the road pulling over everyone who has been spotted by walkie talkie guy.

  • If motorcycles don't need helmets, I don't need a seat belt. Or at least I shouldn't be able to be pulled over for "appearing" not to have one on. The seat belt law gives too much power to the police....just another reason to pull you over.

You know other people drive drunk, right? Or are you getting cabs for them? If so I'll put my next cab ride on your tab.

  • Yep, there are literally no jobs other than policemen. They could also lobby to repeal the laws if they didn't support them.

But they don't. Because THEIR fat welfare-queen, anti-freedom asses value their paychecks more than our freedom.

A true law-enforcement agent would put our freedom first. That makes sense. But they all rob our freedoms so they can stay on welfare. I like your logic.

furthermore...law-enforcement agents see first hand, more than anyone, what happens when seat belts are not worn.

Mine does the same thing. I think the cutoff is around 70 lbs because my 80lbs lab sets it off and my 65 lbs lab/hound does not.

Yeah my dog is 55 lbs and sets it off. I think my car must be around 30 lbs based on the bags that set it off. It doesn't last too long so I guess it's not too bad.
